"Schaller vs. Dunlop strap locks" 2010-05-09
By Jim Peterson (Granite Falls)
I just wrote a similar review for the Dunlop Straploks. The Schallers are prone to loosening and coming apart, the Dunlops are not. If you keep on top of the Schallers and make sure that the nut on the strap is always tight, they're fine. But I've had them come apart on me several times, and I don't trust them anymore. I check them regularly, and I could put thread locker on the nuts, which will help, but I'm eventually going to replace all of my Schallers with Dunlops. In my view the Dunlop is a superior design.

"beware ibanez users... the screws are too thin w/different thread count, don't match the guitar!" 2010-02-25
By wintermute (right behind you)
compared to the screws on my ibanez bass, the threads per inch on the schaller screws is different (more TPI), and the width of the screw threads is thinner (like it could be loose in the hole of the guitar). So, this also means the existing Ibanez screws wont fit the schaller hole, both in the threads (too wide), and the screw head (also too wide).

definitely it seems that the schaller screw is not a match for this guitar.

I would love it if the schaller came with two extra screws to match the ibanez spec... :(

totally underimpressed. even though I like these locks a lot.

I'll probably end up drilling out the center of the schaller nub to be wider (to accomodate the original Ibanez screw's wider threads), and I'll also need to grind down the ibanex screw head to fit inside the nub... man what a pain.

Also... why's the product description for gold, but the picture looks like pewter? I wanted pewter to match the ibanez's hardware...

"Best on the market if installed correctly" 2009-09-27
By Dan K. (Columbus, OH)
I put these on my telecaster after breaking a toe because my strap came loose (I know, I know). I've worked in a guitar shop and have used multiple straplock products and these are by far the best quality that I have seen.

The guy who rated these a 1 star didn't install them right which is why he had bad results. Not to badmouth him though because I did the same thing when I first bought them.

In a nutshell - and really the only complaint I have about these straplocks - two of the biggest electric guitar manufacturers (Gibson & Fender) among others use stock strap button screws that are slightly larger than the ones provided by Schaller. What this means is that the pre-drilled holes in most guitars are just slightly too big to fully secure these straplocks in place. They are only off by a fraction of a cm so it can be decieving.. hence the bad results.

You have two options to remedy this problem, one is easy and the other is a pain. 1) Fill the hole with broken wooden tooth picks and then screw the schaller screw into place. This sounds like a hillbilly fix but it works well. Your only other option (2) is to bore out a larger holes in your guitar and glue in solid pieces of wood so you can start from scratch... but I really wouldn't recommend this unless the first solution didn't work for some reason and you really know what you are doing (if you do it wrong you are going to crack the body of your guitar).

Once you've installed these things correctly though you are basically free and clear to jump around all you want without worrying about whether your guitar is going to go flying! Good Luck!

 "Terrible experience with these" 2009-09-06
By overlook1977 (Raleigh, NC United States)
I bought these for my Les Paul, and they were sold to me as being the 'best on the market'. Several times after installing them I noticed the nut was coming loose, which is pretty scary considering when you have strap locks you usually handle the guitar in a very cavalier fashion, expecting everything to be secure. Then, I lost one of the nuts. Guess what...you can't replace the nut, its M10 x 0.75 metric nut which is basically impossible to find. I attempted to force an M10 x 1.25 nut on there and ended up breaking the whole thing. So, I would strongly NOT recommend these because they kept coming loose, and the replacement nut costs just about as much as a new set.

 "The way to go!" 2009-01-28
By Andrew Kolas (WA, USA)
These are a must have for any guitar! If you want to be able to stand, play, and move around without having to worry about the strap coming off, then these are your calling. Simply unscrew the stock strap bolts, and screw these in, and viola! You're good to go! You may have to tighten the nuts once in a while, but overall, very reliable. A cheap, but essential investment to protect your guitar.
