 "Flimsy and not adjustable" 2010-02-04
By James Roche (Seattle, WA United States)
First of all, the packaging for this item is terrible. It's an unsealed 'clamshell' pack, so, by the time it gets to you, it looks like it's been opened, used, and returned. I reflexively sent the first purchase back to Amazon, and called the manufacturer on the 2nd shipment's arrival. They gave a polite but helpless response. Sadly, the flimsy nature of the packaging is the norm.

The problem with the item is that it's basically garbage. For the price, you'd think that they're adjustable to some degree. The picture you see is not at all deceiving, but try to imagine the metal piping being the consistency of a cheap coat hanger. The black plastic across the top is melted together. The craftsmanship is minimal.

My kid has a big head, fine. These don't reach his ears (he's 2). I tried to adjust them, like you would a pair of stereo headphones. No dice. There's no break in the arms of the headphones. They don't pull out. I stretched out one side, and the other side slurped in. After 3 attempts, I realized that it's just one solid piece of the aforementioned cheesy metal hidden by the melted plastic.

I like Vic Firth drum sticks. They were actually "my brand" when I played a full-size kit, so they have my respect for their seriously crafted items. These "Kidphones" are probably the highest-margin item in their catalog. The main issue I have with these is that the cheap, totally flimsy construction is intended for children. You'd think that, for kids, they'd optimize on sturdiness. My son would destroy these on the first day. They would definitely survive being dropped, but they wouldn't survive being bent up and restored to their original shape. Definitely not.

If you want something better, look for another brand. I find it hard to believe that this piece of sugar item costs more than isolation headphones used for listening to music. I'm going to search for a replacement and, if I don't anything, I'm just going to buy some stereo headphones and cut the cord off.

This is a joke of a product. It makes me wonder what the other reviewers are expecting for their money.

 "Developing drummers" 2009-12-14
By Christian Girard (I am a citizen of the world taking refuge in the USA)
We have a set for our three year old who has been using them for a year with is drum set. Thus, I can comment with a year's experience with the item.

I rate it a 5 for simply providing hearing protection for children.

I rate them a 4 for apparent hearing protection because my son seems to hear me okay when I speak to him and he is wearing the headset. Yes, I do know that they are tuned to a high frequency. Since the adjustment band is customized for a child's head, the headset will not fit on my adult head so that I cannot perform my own listening test to determine the level of sound deadening.

I rate them a 5 for the fit on a child's head.

In summary: the headset looks great, it fits well on a child heads, it properly encloses the entire ear, and it appears to reduce the sound volume to the child's ear, but because of the adjustment's band fitting for a child head an adult cannot actually perform a listening test with the headset.

"Do not believe the availability of this item" 2009-10-21
By PInay To Love (Baltimore)
I ordered this item from this seller on October 6. Delivery was supposed to be Oct. 13 to 16. No such item came. I finally sent an e-mail on October 19 looking for it. Oh, only then did they tell me it is back ordered for another 2 to 4 weeks!! I needed it yesterday. If you call this seller's 800 number, the voice prompt/greeting will play over and over again. It is very hard to speak to a live person. I guess they don't care because they have bulk orders and who am I a small-time $30 order. Beware of this seller. Not a good marketplace seller. Find your item elsewhere.

 "Great for Kids!" 2009-09-17
By M. Stewart (Port Charlotte, FL)
My son loves these. He has a sensory disorder, so is sensitive to noises. For the most part, we have desensitized him, but I wanted to protect his hearing when we took him to see the Swamp Buggy Races for the first time. He still didn't like the noise when the really big ones came out, but he tolerated it and enjoyed the race. Sometimes he uses them like a security blanket when the thunder is really loud or in busy, public places. I tried earplugs first, but he wouldn't keep them in, and he kept gettign ear infections. The only problem is that they are hot, as is typical for headphones, and they don't fit under/over a hat.

 "These are awesome" 2009-06-18
By Laura (Trenton, NJ)
We bought these for my 7 year old who flips out over any loud noises. We used them in Disney for the fireworks shows, on the plane and anywhere there was loud music - they are very comfortable and adjustable and they can still hear - just at an acceptable decibal level! And the price was not too high either! Love these!

Vic Firth SIH1 Stereo Isolation Drummers Headphones are designed to protect musicians from the high sound levels associated with their instruments.Prolonged exposure to these excessive levels of noise can have traumatic and lasting effects, including hearing fatigue, tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. These are specially designed headphones, which drastically reduce the level of external sound reaching the musician's ears, offering valuable protection from potential damage. The SIH1 reduces overall noise levels by 24 decibels and features high quality stereo headphones. Unlike non-isolation headsets, where musicians typically crank the volume to very high and potentially damaging sound levels in order to hear the music clearly, the SIH1 reduces ambient noise from the instruments. This allows the musician to play along with the recorded music or monitor other performers in a live situation at comfortable and safe sound levels.Designed in conjunction with Vic Firth Signature artist Rod Morgenstein, these headphones were made with the recording, performing and teaching musician in mind! When asked about the SIH1's, Rod commented, 'The concept of these headphones has changed my musical life! After years of using open air headphones in studios and practice at volume levels that were damaging my hearing - I can now use these new headphones for hours on end with no fatigue at all, and with no risk of hearing damage since I can listen at a comfortable volume level.'

"Excellent! Great headphonesphones for great value!" 2010-03-24
By Kibwe C. Sawyer
If you're reading these reviews, you may get the impression that the Vic Firth Headphones are of good quality but may have some issues. So let me tell you my situation. I have a low budget recording operation in the most acoustically hostile environment (a church with no insulation, and concrete floors... AND LOTS AND LOTS OF ECHO!!!). The echo creates circumstances that render conventional headphones useless. In many ways, it amplifies the sound. The Vic Firth headphones cuts out 85% of outside noise. This allows me to make effective and accurate mixes in this facility. This is all you need to know. Buy the headphones!

 "Some Improvements" 2010-02-28
By Michael P. Hurst (sunnyvale, ca)
These headphones have been improved from the last generation with padding that is more comfortable and conforms to the head better for a more secure sound barrier. On the other hand, it seems Vic Firth has gotten cheap on the quality of the actual speakers. The older sets have louder, clearer speakers, however with a headphone amp these new sets work fantastic... even with the loudest of drums. Isolation headphones are a must have for any musician who wants to play along to clear music without destroying their hearing over time, and I haven't seen any other headphones that compare to these in durability, sound, and price. I'm on my 4th pair and use them pretty heavily. They hold up really well but eventually one ear will short out and have no sound.

 "Decent Drumming Headphones" 2010-02-20
By RK (North Carolina, USA)
I play drums and needed isolating headphones to practice with. These work okay. They don't fit over and cup the ears as I thought they would--because of the foam they sort of sit on top. The protection is not quite equal in both ears because of the fit. The audio quality of the drivers is decent, but not great, kind of treble-y. Also, the sound of my drums is not very true coming through all the muffling. Still, they work for what I need them for and the cost was fine. There aren't a lot of dedicated drummer's headphones out there or I might have had more to compare these with.

"Very good item, especially for the price." 2010-02-08
By Matt A. (VA)
I had seen these on [...] about a year ago but I didn't want to purchase them without testing them first. Recently my band started recording in a new studio and the engineer had a pair of these in his control room. I tried them on and was pleased with them, so I ordered them immediately. They are quite good for playing along to songs on drums, but they are a bit quiet. They can also get a little uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time, because they clamp so tightly to your head. Other than that, they are great for recording also, and the sound quality is very good, too. I would recommend these.
