"Not what I had hoped" 2010-02-11
By Shadow (Charleston, SC)
I want to be fair, overall I think the sounds on this unit are very good. But I wanted a drum machine that was not confusing to program songs on for someone that liked playing and not programming things all day. I play guitar, drums, bass and I sing and do them all proficiently. But I felt that I would rather program a drum machine instead of ordering a whole drumset to play on my recordings. I did online searches of reviews to seek out a simple drum machine that had the ability to program songs. The Zoom was the one most people touted as easier to understand. Maybe so, maybe more than the Roland or Alesis...but it still it too time consuming for anyone who wants to just play and get to recording. I don't want to sit in menus all day, it kills the creatiuve juices immediately. So I sent it back and ordered a Yamaha electronic drumset which suits me much better. Thois unti will be great for someone who wants to sit and learn a whole other piece of equipment...but if you want to get to playing and not programming, this is not it.

"Nice options and Things to keep you busy, BUT" 2010-02-07
By James E. Sink (Newport News, Virginia 23602)
The Zoom has so many options and patterns for drums, has many bass sounds to die for, but the drums to me are a bit weak souning, but after all is said and done, this zoom is a great little unit lacking big drum sound...The SR-18 /SR18 Alesis blows the Zoom drums into hiding with it's big rock drum sounds, but the Zoom has soooo many more other options to keep you bust and having fun plus its easier to work with over the Alesis sr18/sr-18....why can't one company put it all together?....I like them both...I do think the Zoom is headed in the right direction...Side note, the Alesis has a weak bass sound.....

"No AC adapter, though it says there is." 2010-02-04
By Dennis (Seattle, WA USA)
If you read "What's in the box?" on the Amazon web page it says that an AC adapter is included. When it arrived there was no AC adapter and it is clear the box is so small that there is no way it could have been included. The AC adapter is for sale separately for $25, which is a lot for an AC adapter and raises the actual price of the thing considerably, if you don't want to keep buying AA batteries all the time. If you sit around your music room playing along, you probably want an AC adapter. This is a Zoom strategy, but Amazon is enabling this by indicating that the AC adapter is included. Only option is to pay $25 for an adapter or send the thing back. So figure that into the price when you buy.

"easy to use, lots of sounds, and the price is right" 2009-09-14
By lamar (new orleans)
very nice drum machine, for me out of the box, there is to much bass(guitar)on the different pre loaded songs, mainly cause i play bass. that will not matter to sum, seeing that many view it as a sin to use anything preprogramed, but not me, i enjoy tweaking factory settings(rip wesley willis) this is the same machine as the beat kangz street boxx, but for the average player this is one is more versatile, sum really good videos on youtube of people explaining the ins and outs of the rt223, which was a buying point for me, cause me and manuals just do not get along, the groove function is very cool, lets you add to or chang the beat in mid song, and its always on time. i havent bought a drum machine in over ten years, nice to see the prices have gone down and the sounds improved. all in all A++++

 "Nice guitar backup rhythm" 2008-02-09
By E. Lavoie (Ellsworth, Maine)
Looking for a dual drum and bass machine to keep my chops on beat, the zoom machine was perfect for practice sessions. It sounds excellent pluged into my home surround sound and really gets my creative improvisational juices flowing. I play fusion, rock, blues and jazz in the style of EVH to VAI. This machine gives me a nice work out and jams in many styles. Excellent practice tool to keep you fresh and really allows you to work on your creativity.

 "GREAT LITTLE BUGGER!" 2010-03-11
By Joseph W. Szilagy (Mississauga, Canada)
Yes, I bought the earlier silver-grey version a couple of years ago, ("used" from Long & McQuade's, here in Canada), and I will not part with it! I have a fantastic Yamaha Motif ES synth/workstation with great sounding drums, however I love the compatibility of this litte thing, and would much rather tap away beats and fills here, than on the keys of the Motif both of which will end up on my Tascam 2488NEO.

The thing is bloody sturdy and tough, and the drums (sampled "real" drums), sound superb! When I first got it though, it would play back samples, but I couldn't program beats, I suppose due to the previous owner.

Eventually, I simply downloaded the manual from Tascam (also due to the previous owner), and all it needed was to erase and restart with all the original settings restored, then it was up and running. Fabulous!

"Power in a small package" 2009-11-02
By E. L. Skelton (Coenville)
Love this thing, sounds great - nice, crisp and "Live", though it can be a real pain to program in a whole song. Easy to use is an understatement in terms of just creating a loop or playing it in real time. Touch sensitive pads provide at least a small amount of realism to the sound. Great for practicing against as a guitar/bass player!

"Simple and functional beyond expectations" 2009-05-20
By Code Monkey (Los Angeles)
This drum module is the best value out there. It's intuitive and easy to use after a breif parusal of the manual. I was suprised that the unit's housing was as durable as it was when I opened the packaging. I use it as a *much better* substitue for a metronome when practicing as well as helping me during the songwriting phase. Decent selection of samples with more than acceptable quality given the price point.

Combined with a Pocket POD, it's great for portable practice with an electric guitar as well. Any changes I would recommend would affect the price point so they're not worth mentioning.

"Best cheap drum machine around!" 2009-02-17
By Jerry S. Pecks (Denver, CO USA)
The Zoom MRT3 is a great little piece of equipment for those who just want to add some basic drum sounds to their songs. If you're looking to purchase an inexpensive drum machine, look no further than this bad boy!

"Decent for the price range" 2008-10-10
By Ryan M. Wahl
The MRT3 is a great piece of equipment for the beginner drum machine enthusiast. For bass and guitar players alike it can truely be invaluable during practices or for when the garage band is lacking a true drummer. Its fairly easy to program and lay down beats with, however its biggest downfall is a lack of quality drum sounds. Once you find or compile a set you like, you will have no need to use any of the other included ones because they are pretty crappy.

The batteries last for a long time but I always recommend picking up a generic phillips AC adapter for when you can play plugged in. Midi capabilities are nice for outputting sounds to a different device (IE Midi controller or PC interface) although most users will seldom use that feature.

Besides that, take the time to read and understand the manual, but if your looking for more realistic drum sounds, look elsewhere.
