 "Ernie Ball Volume pedal" 2010-10-04
By Anthony L. Bigbee
I bought this pedal to more smoothly transition from rythm to lead volume levels. This pedal lets you smoothly dial in the right volume while you play. It's a very solid pedal and well built.

 "Best Volume Pedal Available" 2009-12-17
By J. Joyce (Lynchburg, VA USA)
I personally love the 'swelling' method of guitar playing.. I have owned one other guitar pedal before this one, and there is truthfully no comparison. I love the Ernie Ball Jr..! I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants the smoothest transition from no sound to full sound.

Plus, it's most helpful feature is the 'Tuner' output. If you run a 1/4 inch power from the Tuner output to the input of a tuner (I use a Boss TU-2), you can leave your tuner on at all times and still have sound. Normally, a tuner will cut off the sound signal. This is very helpful when playing on a stage!

"Yamaha FG JR1 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar" 2010-07-29

Sounds pretty good for the price, but the tuning didn't hold, the factory strings were crap, but new strings will solve that tuning problem. My son is 5 and learning, It fits good in his hands.

 "Great starter guitar" 2010-05-17
By D. Zydel
I bought this for my 13 y/o son because the full size guitar makes it hard for him to hold properly. He is much more comfortable with this, he's progressing faster with his lessons, and it sounds great and is holding it's tuning well.

 "Wonderful Children's Guitar" 2010-01-23
By washbear (Apex, NC USA)
I'm very satisfied with this guitar, which I bought for my 8-year old son. The tone is good and the guitar stays in tune. It feels well-made in the hands. We had a Mark II M2G-30SB 1/2-size guitar which we'd used for a year before this, and it didn't stay in tune (and it always had one sour string that never would get in tune, even with the help of an electronic tuner. Changing the strings didn't help). So I'm very pleased with the Yamaha. It's great quality at an affordable price. We purchased the guitar through the Guitar Center website, which had free shipping. It comes with a soft case. The only criticism I have, and it's a minor one, is that I wish the case had at least one pocket on it for picks and such. But it's a well-made case otherwise. Thank you, Yamaha, for making a good product!

"Beware of the Steel Strings" 2009-12-30
By A. Oldham (USA)
This was purchased as a first guitar gift for my kids. I admittedly don't know much about guitars, but one of the things that make things difficult learning a guitar is sore fingers and apparently nylon strings are easier on the fingers than steel strings.

Just wanted to let everyone know although this guitar appears to be marketed toward kids, it has steel strings... so beware.

Otherwise the guitar sounds good for the price.

"Good Value in a Smaller Guitar" 2009-12-16
By M. J. Keyes
One of the other reviewers complained that their guitar teacher called this a "1/4 sized guitar" and it appeared that they felt they had gotten a bad deal. No, it is a 3/4 sized guitar - this is based on scale length and not overall size of the guitar - but it is small. This guitar has a 21 1/4" scale (normal is about 26" but it varies), a 12 1/2" lower bout and a 9" upper bout. This places it in the parlor size category, more or less, and it fits a child well.

This is a fully functioning guitar with a solid spruce top, decent craftsmanship, and an adjustable truss rod. The action is acceptable (although it needs setup at the nut) and the tone is, well, there. You are never going to confuse the Yamaha FG JR1 for a $3000 Taylor. It is a $120 guitar. The main virtues are its size, playability, and price. For that $120 you get a well made, well designed small guitar suitable for all ages with enough tone and volume to hold its own in a small group. You can take it aboard any plane and place it in the overhead rack. If you are sitting around the campfire and have to fight off a bear with it, you are only out $120 and it is sturdy enough to tolerate at least one swing.

The adjustable truss rod lets you change the relief of the neck in all sorts of conditions (assuming you are brave enough to do so) and a little filing on the nut by your luthier (don't try this at home unless you have some experience) will make it very playable for both finger style and pick.

So it is not the top of the line, it works well for what it was intended to be. It sure beats the heck out of the so-called travel guitars which all sound like they are made from cardboard and look like the set designer of Avatar or LOTR produced them for orcs. If you are looking for a quality small guitar but are too cheap to pay for one, give the Yamaha FG JR1 a look.

 "what a beast..." 2010-06-18
By Brandon K.
this pedal is HUGE! i needed something to help with transitions between songs and this is perfect, but man it takes up a lot of real estate on the floor. One of the best features is that it doesn't need to be plugged in to a power source. i dont have any experience with volume pedals, but i like this one; it gets the job done.

"cuts your signal, breaks easily" 2009-07-01
By TMC (Los Angeles, CA)
Please, for the love of tone, stay away from this. I don't know why it does this, but when you put it in your pedal chain it cuts signal strength, as if the maximum volume on the pots are set at 3/4 of the incoming signal.

Also, you *can* repair them when the string breaks, but you'll hate yourself for it and wish you'd just bought a better volume pedal. I like the BOSS FV500H myself, even though it is huge. But stay away from this one.

 "Good unit" 2006-10-21
By Another Monkey
This is probably the best volume pedal of its kind, meaning the kind which uses a pot (potentiometer) to adjust volume. Most volume pedals work this way. The problem is that the pots do wear down over time, leading to scratchy sound and uneven performance. It's an inevitability you're stuck with unless you're willing to shell out for an optical pedal (to be described later in this review).

It seems that some users don't realize that you can adjust the volume swell rates on these things. That's a nice feature. It's well built and doesn't seem to suck tone, which is very important to an acoustic musician such as myself. It does suck a little bit of volume.

In response to the other review: no, it's not for keyboards. Perhaps you were misled by a salesperson, but there are two versions of this pedal - one for passive instruments (model 6180, high-impedance 250k) and one for active instruments (model 6181, low impedance 25k). This page is for the passive model. A keyboard signal is a low-impedance signal and is not appropriate for this version of the pedal. A typical high-impedance signal would be a passive pickup in an acoustic guitar. The model you get depends on your instrument and where along the chain you put it. For example, if I put it between the guitar and preamp, then I should use the high-impedance model, but if I were putting it between the preamp and the amp, then the low-impedance model is the one.

All that said, the best volume pedals you can get are probably the George Dennis models. They use an optical system, there there's no pot to inevitably wear down. Also, they are impedance-switching, so one pedal will take care of you, no matter where you put it. They don't suck tone either. They'll run you about $130, but are well worth the money.

 "Not for keyboards" 2006-08-09
By Philip D. Mariconda (Seattle area, WA USA)
Another store suggested this as a volume pedal for a keyboard. With its sturdy build, it seemed worth the extra money. Because it has audio in and out, it can in theory be used on any electronic instrument.

The result was disappointing for me. From full volume, the sound is flawless. Then barely moving the pedal downward causes the volume to cut in half, followed by a smooth decrease in volume from there. This may work for guitars, but not for keyboards.

I will be returning this to the store I got it from. Based on the other review here, it is likely a guitar player will be quite happy with it.

 "ernie ball JR vol." 2004-08-26
By M. Swinburne
Just like the bigger ernie ball volume this was sized down from, this pedal is incredible and has to be near-indestructible. The pedal has a very smooth action and uses a kevlar chord instead of gears or optics to alter the potentiometer. Very nice in deed and a great deal.

"Good for a small acoustic guitar" 2009-11-11

A decent, inexpesive case. The case material seems durable but the zipper is a little sticky.

An added bonus is the shoulder starps, in addition to the handle - a nice touch.
