MobilePre USB is the preamp with a built-in audio interface thats designed for laptop recording such as field recording and sampling expeditions. In fact, its one of the only completely bus-powered preamps available. (Of course, you can use it on the desktop as well.) A total of three kinds of audio inputs and outputs provide maximum flexibility for any applicationincluding two on-board microphone/instrument preamps and high-impedance instrument inputs ideal for connecting guitars and basses. And unlike many competitors, zero-latency direct monitoring provides you with a streamlined professional recording experience.

"A bit dated, but totally solid." 2010-01-16
By Mike Blair
The MobilePre has been around for a while now - note that the photo shown here is outdated, the unit is now black and grey rather than blue/white. While this unit may not be the absolute latest and greatest audio interface on the market it has pretty solid support and history. I got mine about 8 months ago for ~$60 (i think there might have been a pricing mistake!).

Works well with Windows 7 32 and 64 bit OS. My only minor gripe is that the minimum number of samples is 128, which makes for roughly a 7 ms total latency. The built-in soundcard on my HP laptop works down to 64 samples (32 using Jack in Linux), BUT cannot touch the sound of the MobilePre. Note - using Reaper permits using a WDM Kernel Streaming driver instead of ASIO, which allows a little better latency. Still, sound travels roughly 1 foot each millisecond, so the total latency is like have an amp about 7 feet away, which is barely noticable.

Solidly built, great for guitar. The preamp section when using a dynamic mic is a bit noisy though.

Would recommend to a friend.

"I have enjoyed this for years." 2010-01-12
By T. L. Warnick (Utah)
I have used one of these for a couple of years. Paired with a matched set of R0DE NT-2s, and using goldwave recording software it is awesome. I have made hundreds of recordings of everything from crickets, voice reading, live bands, and who knows what else. It is absolutely perfect for recording band practice and gigs, and cheap-o demos.

I think this is the best $100 you can spend for remote recording (and good microphones.)

I'm wondering now if I can get another one and record four tracks (surround) simultaneously.

 "Absolutely Love It!!!" 2009-12-03

This is probably one of the best pieces of studio equipment anybody can have, especially if you are seeking mobility with your equipment. I have used this for both music and podcast production and it is solid. It is light and compact. I was able to fit this piece of equipment along with a mic, the cord and my 13" macbook pro in a standard size laptop backpack. Not heavy or bulky at all. Works great in any production situation. Looking for production on the go, this is your best bet. Also Amazon saves you about $50 versus going to Guitar Center.

"No supported by Windows XP Media Center" 2009-11-04

No supported by Windows XP Media Center. I finally found this on the manufacturer web page. Could be nice if the warning is on Amazon so, you don't waste time ordering and returning

"Excellent product; Vista users, beware..." 2009-01-29

Update: Beta drivers are out now on this product for Vista 64 bit, and they work pretty well.

I would have given this product 5 stars, but since switching to a new computer running Vista 64 bit, I have had some problems.

This is an extremely competent interface, and will do exactly what you need it to do. I have had it for over 3 years, and it has worked flawlessly throughout. It's very simple: install your drivers, plug it in via USB, and you are ready to go. I used it as my mic input, and just as a regular sound card. Because it supports ASIO, I never had a single latency issue with this device, and I run a lot of taxing programs (FL Studio, SONAR, and Reason). It's very solid and durable as well, almost feels unbreakable at times. I dropped it from over 10 feet, and it still worked perfect.

Now, if you are on Vista 64 bit, and considering this product, please wait. There are no current drivers available. M-Audio will tell you that it's class compliant, and will work, which is only half true. It will work, but you will have to download a third party program that offers ASIO support, and maybe jump through a few other hoops to get it to work DECENTLY, and not have horrible latency problems. Just keep that in mind.
