"Good Analog Delay, Not What I Was Expecting" 2010-05-01
By D. Ludvickson-Luna (NJ)
I've never owned an analog delay before and after going back and forth between this and the Memory Boy, I decided to go with the CC. Just got the Carbon Copy the other day and spent about four hours messing around with it. The delay signal is very warm and rich sounding... it's actually got it's own tone, unlike a digital delay which just replicates your original signal. That said, I was initially a little disappointed in the CC; I was expecting echo madness and got something more like a well made, subtle studio effect. My biggest complaint with the pedal (so far... I've only owned it a few days) is that the when the delay is maxed out, the signal is so warm and subtle it gets lost in the mix and is pretty much useless. That's where the Digi Delay really worked wonders, but again this is a different kind of beast.

I opened up the back and messed around with the Modification Button's trim pots for Speed and Depth. Definitely worth doing, as the slight warbling tape effect of the MOD button was a bit too subtle to my taste. Turned all the way up it delivers a slight chorus type effect that isn't really noticeable until you allow your signal to ring-out. I'll be messing around with this a lot more.

I haven't had a chance to run the pedal through my tube amp yet, and I'm hoping that really improves the signal with the long delay times and lets this pedal really shine. I've heard nothing but good things about it and so far I'm about 50/50 on liking it. It works REALLY well to beef up your tone and give a bit of echo. So far that's probably the highlight of this pedal, is that it sounds very professional, not just a cheap echo-box. HOWEVER, what I was after was a bit more into outer-space, if I wanted to go there, and I'm going to consider getting my DOD Digi Delay/Sampler fixed for precisely that reason. Once I get that done, I really enjoy the tone of the MXR, so I'll probably run the MXR through the DOD and get the sound I'm after.

If anybody has any suggestions as how to improve any of these problems, please let me know!

Two Days Later...

Finally got to run the CC through my tube amp and it performed phenomenally. I don't know if this pedal needs a period of time to be "broken in," but it's now running perfectly and doing everything i expected of it and more. The oscillation of the MOD switch was more prominent than it's been before (I even had to open it up and reduce the speed... the width will probably have to be backed off a little too). The previous delay problems are gone and this thing is a serious monster! The most impressive thing about this pedal is still... the tone. Whether through a transistor (I practice through a Fender Princeton Chorus) or through a tube amp (Crate 50) this pedal will improve your tone like magic. I was really worried I was going to have to get my old DOD Digi Delay fixed... but after breaking this thing in and seeing what it can really do, there's no need for it. Buy this thing, open it up, mess with the MOD switch and enjoy. Well done MXR.

 "Great pedal!!!" 2010-04-22
By Tyrell19 (Virginia)
I have been Playing guitar for over 15 years. I have always loved a delay sound but could never really duplicate the sounds that I wanted to hear from my favorite bands. I have used a rack delay, the boss dd3, the boss dd6 and the line 6 dl4. The only one that even comes close is the Dl4, which is a great pedal in its own right, but for different reasons. The Carbon Copy is warm and has hands down the best delay sound I have ever heard. I play three main electric guitars... An american deluxe stratocaster (ash), an American standard Telecaster, and An Epiphone Les Paul through a Fender Deville amp. When I first plugged up and started to play my girlfriend, who usually views my guitar playing as a mild annoyance, came into the room asking what are you playing?? It sounds awesome.. I said Im playing a song i wrote years ago that you weren't so impressed with when i played it last week. It just sounds that good. It goes from a mild echo sound to a full sound storm when all the dials are at max. For any price this is a great pedal, but for $139.00usd it is a steal!!!

 "Sweet analog delay" 2010-04-17
By noisemaker (Evansville, IN)
MXR really hit a home run with this one... $150 is a decent price for any analog delay and this is a very good one, on a par with pricy boutique units. It's dark sounding, yes, but that's what I like to keep the delay sound nice and subtle. The delay is never the star of the show, the guitar playing is. Doesn't color the unaffected guitar sound at all that I can hear. I use it through a '65 Fender Deluxe reissue after a Fulltone overdrive pedal. I like it even better than the Deluxe's tube reverb for giving the sound general depth and atmosphere. I leave it on pretty much all the time. Great unit, only delay I will need for a long time. When MXR discontinues these, I bet they will get expensive on the vintage market.

 "luvit, luvit, luvit......." 2010-04-16
By Philip J. Kelley
I've had my Carbon Copy for about 1 year now. This thing is built like a tank. I like the versitility if this pedal. From a soft almost reverb feel to down right serious delay. It had a very smooth analog delay that doesn't sound digital at all. Plenty of range. As long as you put it in the right place in your chain of pedals you'll love this pedal. If you're a serious musician and need a delay pedal this one is it. Hands down.

"LOVE the sound and simplicity, but wish it had a tap tempo control" 2010-03-05
By Philip Hutchison
I've tried many, many delay pedals through the years, and this one sounds the best. I was really excited the first time I used it because I felt like I finally found the warm, smooth sounding delay I was looking for. It's not brittle or 'treble-y' like many of today's pedals, and is reminiscent of some of the sounds you'll hear on classic late 60s early 70s rock albums.

The Carbon Copy is an extremely simple pedal, which is nice when compared to many of today's multi-purpose delay pedals. It's brain-dead easy to use.

Like most MXR pedals, it's rugged and feels very durable. It has a small footprint and can easily fit in with your other pedals.

The only problem I have with it -- and the reason I don't give it 5 stars -- is that it's missing a tap tempo controller. Sure, I know it would ruin the simplicity of the pedal, but when I'm standing up playing guitar the last thing I want to do is lean down and try to adjust the delay speed to match the tempo of the music.

Otherwise, this pedal is FANTASTIC and a great addition to my pedalboard.

I should note that I also own the Line 6 DL4 Stompbox Delay Modeler, and I find the Carbon Copy MUCH easier to use, smoother sounding, and generally more fulfilling. Of course, the trade-off is that the DL4 is extremely versatile and can do many different jobs while the MXR only does one thing. But you know what? The MXR does its job really well, and for my tastes is often all I need. I unplugged my DL4.
