 "Tonally Nintendo!" 2010-09-28
By dutybot
Seeing as how most kids today like their drop D tuning, this might be a little tougher to obtain the amazing sounds that this pedal is capible of. I on the other hand, still play old school standard tuning, and alot of jazz chords and rockabilly. The single note approach with this pedal can muster up some good glitchy nintendo sounds.

The best feature of the pedal for me is when playing higher on the fret board (and higher strings) you can make your guitar sound like a synth bass. It's a really fun pedal and a great tool to inspire the musician who might be in a dry spell.

I have the "block" logo version of this pedal. I have heard that there may be subtle differences in the circuitry, but none have proven it.

In the future, I'd like to see the good folks at Jim Dunlop to re-release this pedal as the Blue Box II, with a mod button to help track the subs a little tighter, for the musician who would like to use it for more straight forward octave distortion. Kinda like using the MXR Bass Octave deluxe before an MXR Doubleshot Distortion (Top Channel).

Summary...Buy it.

"Useful once you learn its quirks" 2010-05-17
By Will Roberts (Atlanta, GA)
There's a slight volume drop when you activate the pedal. While there are mods out there to reconcile this (the C11 mod), they don't work on the newer Blue Box models (any model with a red PCB). To compensate for the drop, I placed the Blue Box before my clean boost pedal (an MXR Micro Amp, which is always on). Now the volume is spot-on, and can even make my overall signal louder.

The octave setting (mix knob at 0) sounds quite good, but the tracking is a bit off. Use the neck pickup and play above the 12th fret for better tracking. The fuzz setting (mix knob at 100) sound great too. This is how I use the pedal. So far, I'm not too fond of the settings in between, but they are definitely usable in certain situations.

 "Truely unique pedal effect." 2008-05-04
By Tejan C. Schaar
I began looking for this effect after listening to Led Zepplin's "Fool in the Rain". After finding out that this was the effect that Jimmy Page had used I just had to have it. Not only did I get it very fast but for less than all of the other online music stores were asking for. It does take some getting used to(as far as the adjustments are concerned), but that was half the fun. The range of different sounds it produces isn't very broad & is not for everyone, but if you like odd 70's type electronic sounds coming from your guitar, you should be very happy to own one of these

By David B. Fobert (Copperas Cove, TX United States)
Like all MXR effects it is made well, but has limited application. Settings can not be duplicated and tend to "drift" after selection. Shipping through the dealer was done very well; I will not hesitate to buy other products from American Musical Supply.

 "MXR M103 Blue Box Fuzz/Octave Pedal" 2007-02-07
By Luis A. Bermejo (D.R.)
well made. when you roll the right knob all the way to 5 o'clock you get a fuzz sound .. roll it to 7 o'clock you get a octave, everything between both is a mix of fuzz & octave.. the left knob controls the output volume. it also mixes the fuzz octave sound , it also changes very fast i mean one second fuzz and the other oct .. that fast.. from oct to fuzz you can hear it way on the back but it's there.. its hard to describe but if you're reading about it maybe its for you. the only thing i dont like is that if im playing the clean channel and then activate the blue box with the volume set a maximun, the sound coming out is lower than that when playing clean .. therefore youre gonna sound lower when you turn it on.. to solve that i use a compressor but i'd still have to press one first and then the other in order to get the same amount of volume as playing the clean channel alone.

 "Good" 2010-08-17
By John Cash (Nowhere, KS)
The Hi-Hats are excellent on sound and they do record well. I also noticed that I can hear the Hi-Hats when other instruments are playing.

The Crash is to heavy and doesn't quite have the sound that a serious drummer would be looking for. Mainly because I use a K Custom Dark crash is why I think this crash doesn't sound fast enough to me.

The Ride I have mixed feelings about. The bell just didn't have the sound I was looking for in a ride.

 "cool stuff" 2009-11-12
By paulpanchula (miami florida)
i hv read both reviews here. i think both are being quite forthright. here s mine. 1st let me say that these are not for everyone. serious musicians will not be happy with these. for several reasons. the crashes all lack violent strong attack.[my opinion]+ i found that they dont record v.well. they hv their own sound...thats4sure. they dont pierce thru other instruments v.well also[my opinion] no way to play a jazz festival+then kick heavy metal if u know what i mean. the other major drawback is that wise buyers will purchase 2 complete sets. a simple drop or 2 of these scraped together will result in u needing to replace em...+ zildjians now discontinued them...u could easily pay $200 for just 2 pcs. u now hv all the problems revealed. are there gd things abt them?...yes...wonderful things! these are a bargain when compared to the only other similar product...[paistes slipknot] u will note they are VERY expensive+although they do hv more attack. u cant put together a full set for under $1,200. + the paint holds up better bt it still comes off. i purchased 2 complete sets of pitchblacks...[15'' hats] [13''splash] [16''crash] [18''crash] [18''china] [20''crash/ride]+ a 22''ride. after i replaced the drum heads on my $300 drum set with evans onynx covers [$55]...it is so lovely. these simply COMMAND respect+ will be everyones favorite. dont hesitate...buy em. p.s. u cansee+hear em on the video[dopeboyz]the game.

 "I love these cymbals" 2009-10-31
By KB Gunn (Outside the box)
The short review by MG Barber trashes these cymbals. I may be wrong, but I get the feeling that he has no actual experience with them. It is obvious that he has electronics knowledge if you look at his accurate review of JJ tubes for guitar amps. He most likely is a guitarist only. I as a multi-instrumentalist differ in my opinion of these cymbals. I play a black set of OCDP Avalon maple drums which sound outstanding. I have a set of Sabian Hand Hammered cymbals that I have been using with the Orange County Drums. They are over $1000 cast molded cymbals and were the top of the line when purchased several years ago. They are very nice, but have weak projection and do not cut through the mix very well at all. We do not mic my drums when we play. Also, the high hat has a "womp" sound no matter how I adjust the bottom cymbal. Air is trapped in the high hat and it is very hard to get a good "chick" sound and even harder to get it to last through a whole song.

I got these cymbals recently and was immediately stunned at the heavy weight of each unit. The Pitch Black is beautiful and goes great with my black sparkle drums. I was expecting a deep dull sound from them. Instead, I got a bright clear crash from the 18 inch crash, a beautiful clear articulate ride from the 22 inch with excellent wash between strikes and a beautiful LOUD chick from the high hat due to the rippled edge of the lower cymbal. This was a patented feature of Paiste cymbals until recently. Now Zildjian and others offer it as well. I like the size of these cymbals and do not need to use the boom on my stands which also hold the toms (instead of the bass drum). This results in greater stability of the toms on the stands.

As a youth, I had Zildjian cymbals with my Ludwig set and really enjoyed the sound of them. They were cast molded. These pitch black use the sheet metal manufacturing process. I am impressed. They are 80%/20% bronze/tin and are sweet sounding, much better than I expected. They are definitely a keeper. I recommend these cymbals very highly and you simply can't beat the price of $200.

 "The perfect companion!" 2009-05-07
By Arthur H. Johnson II (Flint, MI USA)
I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. The sound is great, and is plenty loud when you wanna slap away without bothering the family. I even hooked it up to my home theater system, and it really drove the sub-woofer. If your stereo or boombox has decent bass capabilities, you're all set! Next I'm going to hook it up to the computer and see if I can't make some mp3's of my fav licks.

This is a great toy for the experienced bassist, or the beginner just getting started. I would recommend this to anyone.

"Great Little Amplifier - Great Price" 2009-04-02
By Daniel B. Glover (Texas)
I use this when I am on the road and want to practice in my hotel room. Its not going to give you anything by way of effects but you can at least not disturb anyone around you while playing. The headphones are not the best but you can plug any 3.5mm heaphone into it. Also, if you are worried about it not being loud have no fear, they are plenty loud when just practicing.

"Pretty good for the price but" 2009-01-25
By Lee J. Davito
For the money...it's a pretty nice sounding practice amp..Plenty of volume and a nice clean tone...I compared the supplied headphones to my Sennheiser studio phones...the latter won hands down (to no surprise)the amp easily drives them..the included set tend to have some bass rolloff.

I was looking for something that also had an auxilary input...so I could blend in music from my walkman or home system...This unit doesn't.....which was my only disappointment.....I wish somebody made a practice amp that accomodated bass and auxilary unit...with independant input level controls...I also like the fact DEAN didn't put a compressor on this...many of us dont care for that feature...altho an adjustable limiter works much better on bass to fatten up your sound and kill any dead spots on the neck

I have a Tascam unit that I am not very impressed with.....too many features and it isn't very user friendly.....I'll review that in a separate column.

All in all...if you're looking for something to practice thru solo...without the option of playing along with music...this is probably your best bet for the money.

 "Overall a good value" 2007-05-27
By John T. Price (Caulfield, Missouri, USA)
This functions well for the money, but there is one drawback. The cord on the headphones is not long enough to go around my chin! I cannot believe that this particular design flaw was not caught. I have lots of headphones with my stereo, MP3, ham radio, etc., and I have never had this particular problem, ever. I'm a large guy, 6'4", and I wear a 7-7/8 hat. A regular sized person has no problem. I use another headset with the unit, which allows a lot of string noise through. However, with headphones that seal around the ear, you have higher volume.

It is a really good concept though, as I can plunk away for hours and not raise the ire of my wife. If you are an average sized person, this is a flawless item.

Rocktron Banshee Talk Box

3.5.10

Buy Cheap Rocktron Banshee Talk Box

Buy Low Price From Here Now

Bringing a cool, new twist to the outdated generation of complicated and risky talk boxes, the Banshee is a unique new product that gives classic rock touches to today's players. Although "talk boxes" have been used in the making of hit music (Aerosmith, Frampton, Joe Walsh, etc.) for years, many guitar players simply have not tried them because of their complicated and potentially damaging setup. Leave it to the stomp box gurus at Rocktron. The Banshee rocks, simply and safely. What makes the Banshee so unique is that it contains its own internal preamp, amplifier, and horn driver. You simply plug into the Banshee like you would any common stomp box, and run the provided "tubing" up the mic stand and into your mouth. The rest is up to your own imagination as you get the most incredible sounds from your instrument. And no more risk of blowing up your favorite amp head, (always a possibility with talk boxes of old). The Banshee's preamp section features controls for gain, tone, and output level. A wide range of clean and dirty preamp tones may be dialed in with plenty of saturation for those who desire lots of gain. Guitar World Magazine wrote: "The Banshee’s high-gain preamp and focused tone control allow for excellent enunciation and sustain. With minimal practice, I was able to create clear words and open vowels, and I could readily see how anyone could become addicted to this effect." Not only does the Banshee scream in the talkbox mode, but Rocktron has also included an extra jack for hookup with an extension pedal speaker. Plugging a speaker cabinet to this output turns your pedal board into a perfect practice setup with enough volume to do some pretty serious cranking! Get your hands on the most unique product in years and let your creative juices flow! Or as Guitar World Magazine put it: "With a simple design and arena-worthy performance at a cool price, this Banshee is sure to send you screaming into the night.

"Simple & Easy To Use" 2008-04-05
By Marcello (If there's a bright center to the galaxy I'm on the planet its farthest from.)
Well, while I did say "east to use" it does require a little practice to get the hang of having to move your mouth around the tube. And also to get the the words to sound intelligible. But to a large degree that also depends on the effect you use. I use my microKORG with my Banshee so its very easy to tweak the settings as I go to get the sound I'm looking for. Also as a little side note I will say this, if you turn the gain up on the Banshee you will get a very prominant hissing that leaks out of the tube. But if you play with the volume knobs on both the talkbox and the input device its really not a problem that can't be tamed.

"great addition to the band" 2007-01-17
By John Murphy (Buffao, NY)
I purchased the talk box for my son and it was a great buy. I knew nothing about the different brands but this is perfect. We had it out of the box and working in minutes. It brings the sound needed when playing a Frampton song or others from that era and adds to some of his bands originals. If this is something you are looking for I would go with the Rocktron Banshee.
