 "Tonally Nintendo!" 2010-09-28
By dutybot
Seeing as how most kids today like their drop D tuning, this might be a little tougher to obtain the amazing sounds that this pedal is capible of. I on the other hand, still play old school standard tuning, and alot of jazz chords and rockabilly. The single note approach with this pedal can muster up some good glitchy nintendo sounds.

The best feature of the pedal for me is when playing higher on the fret board (and higher strings) you can make your guitar sound like a synth bass. It's a really fun pedal and a great tool to inspire the musician who might be in a dry spell.

I have the "block" logo version of this pedal. I have heard that there may be subtle differences in the circuitry, but none have proven it.

In the future, I'd like to see the good folks at Jim Dunlop to re-release this pedal as the Blue Box II, with a mod button to help track the subs a little tighter, for the musician who would like to use it for more straight forward octave distortion. Kinda like using the MXR Bass Octave deluxe before an MXR Doubleshot Distortion (Top Channel).

Summary...Buy it.

"Useful once you learn its quirks" 2010-05-17
By Will Roberts (Atlanta, GA)
There's a slight volume drop when you activate the pedal. While there are mods out there to reconcile this (the C11 mod), they don't work on the newer Blue Box models (any model with a red PCB). To compensate for the drop, I placed the Blue Box before my clean boost pedal (an MXR Micro Amp, which is always on). Now the volume is spot-on, and can even make my overall signal louder.

The octave setting (mix knob at 0) sounds quite good, but the tracking is a bit off. Use the neck pickup and play above the 12th fret for better tracking. The fuzz setting (mix knob at 100) sound great too. This is how I use the pedal. So far, I'm not too fond of the settings in between, but they are definitely usable in certain situations.

 "Truely unique pedal effect." 2008-05-04
By Tejan C. Schaar
I began looking for this effect after listening to Led Zepplin's "Fool in the Rain". After finding out that this was the effect that Jimmy Page had used I just had to have it. Not only did I get it very fast but for less than all of the other online music stores were asking for. It does take some getting used to(as far as the adjustments are concerned), but that was half the fun. The range of different sounds it produces isn't very broad & is not for everyone, but if you like odd 70's type electronic sounds coming from your guitar, you should be very happy to own one of these

Like all MXR effects it is made well, but has limited application. Settings can not be duplicated and tend to "drift" after selection. Shipping through the dealer was done very well; I will not hesitate to buy other products from American Musical Supply.

 "MXR M103 Blue Box Fuzz/Octave Pedal" 2007-02-07
By Luis A. Bermejo (D.R.)
well made. when you roll the right knob all the way to 5 o'clock you get a fuzz sound .. roll it to 7 o'clock you get a octave, everything between both is a mix of fuzz & octave.. the left knob controls the output volume. it also mixes the fuzz octave sound , it also changes very fast i mean one second fuzz and the other oct .. that fast.. from oct to fuzz you can hear it way on the back but it's there.. its hard to describe but if you're reading about it maybe its for you. the only thing i dont like is that if im playing the clean channel and then activate the blue box with the volume set a maximun, the sound coming out is lower than that when playing clean .. therefore youre gonna sound lower when you turn it on.. to solve that i use a compressor but i'd still have to press one first and then the other in order to get the same amount of volume as playing the clean channel alone.

 "Unbelievable Strings" 2006-01-27
By Chad E. Prestridge (Troy MI)
I purchased a set of 4 for my bass in 1990. It was just a old Fender Pbass with stock pickups. The bass imediatly had a deeper sound and nicer feel. The strings rang longer and stayed in tune for outstanding periods of time. I had the medium-lights. Now for the pure comedy. The strings outlasted my bass. Yes that is right... the strings were still in good condition and still holding their tone for an entire gig in Jan 2006. 1 set of these lasted me 16years. My Pbass broke just beneath the neck in the body and I am finally going to give up the ghost and buy another set of strings for a bass... There is imediatly no doubt in my mind as to which set to buy. I went through 5 sets of strings in 3 years due to them shredding near joints and then these lasted me 16 YEARS... Value.. Sound... Tone... Tunning... I had bandmates tell me to replace my strings since they knew how old they were and then I would hand my bass over and say play.. then they would say.. um nevermind.. by God.. how long do those last?... ehhe Watching the guitarist changing strings every few weeks and me beating these strings into the ground and still getting perfect tone out of them for that long.. I will just stop now.. I am sure you get the idea. These strings are nuts.. just plain nuts.. now to go buy a new set.

 "Dont Waste your Money!!!" 2009-11-13
By Jason M Lisowski
Don't buy these strings. I am in the process of experimenting with different strings for my strat and decided to buy a pack of the Blue Steels. They sound great when you first put them on but that's about it. 1 week later they become dull and the lower strings begin to wear extensively and become sharp to the touch. These Strings are supposed to last longer because of the freezing mumbo jumbo but its just the opposite. I never had to change strings so fast. After a week the strings were cutting through my finger corns and shredding them. Don't buy these!! They are junk.

"Smooth, silky feel...and super long lasting" 2005-02-22
By Jared Jongeling (USA)
I would recommend these strings to anybody looking for a smooth, silky string that lasts long and feels good on the fingers. These strings sound absolutely wonderful with my Fender Stratocaster.

They use a process in the plant that involves soaking the strings in -320* fahrenheit liquid nitrogen for fifteen hours to make the strings last longer and sound brighter.

I recommend these over D'Daddario, Ernie Ball, GHS, and just about everything else on the market.

God Bless!

This guitar comes with everything it says it comes with (2 amp cords, a strap, a gig case, an amp, three picks, and of course a guitar). The amp is a great one for someone just starting to play guitar. The amp is about 10 inches tall. You will need to tune it when it comes in to your house. It is my very first Guitar and I am very happy with the choice I made. If you live in North Carolina it comes in about 4-5 days. It can come in many different colors. Austin Bazaar is the company that makes this guitar and amp.

i ordered this thinking i was ordering a bass. don't know why or how i made this mistake but austin bazaar was really cool about it. i sent it back and they immediately sent me the bass i was trying to purchase. although i did inquire with them about a purple bass and they said they would send it in purple, they ended up sending it in blue which is fair considering that's the original color that i purchased the guitar in. all in all i am happy with my purchase. now i just need to learn how to play. will definitely use this company again.

"Hard to beat for the price, but remember, this is a cheap set!" 2010-03-09
By Michael A. Duvernois (Minneapolis, MN United States)
You get an inexpensive guitar, usable amp, and some little do-dads. But the price is incredibly good. You can buy this as a first electric guitar for a child and not feel badly about it. If they enjoy it and stick with it, buy something better next year. If they give up on it, put this out in your next garage sale and ask $40 for the set. It's a low investment strategy.

Now, advice for the purchase, check it out right away, and if it's genuinely broken (as opposed to being cheap and not especially sturdy) contact the seller right away. Give it a try. Beginners often break strings by overtightening during tuning. Have a friend show you how to tune. Enjoy your simple, but good for the low price, guitar setup.

I don't recommend this guitar or any like it

 "Blue Snowball and Macs" 2010-03-08
By Ms. J. Harris (UK)
I bought the Blue Snowball with great expectations for use with my new iMac with Garageband and Logic Studio. Unfortunately, I was VERY disappointed by the VERY low gain despite going through all the settings possible. Apparently, going by the comments on various newsgroups it seems that Blue know about the problem but as yet there is no fix. I could only get even a moderate signal by speaking about 2in from the mike and even then it was not good. According to the Blue website you could download some driver software fix but it only appears to work with old models. Blue have even removed comments from their website presumably because they are tired of all the complaints. I have replaced the Snowball with a Samson C01u which I must say works brilliantly with plenty of gain without any driver software. Looks like my Snowball is destined for eBay!

Test drove this thing at a buddy's house last night and it rules.

We recorded a full band situation from the middle of the room

and also close mic'ed some guitars. It all sounded great.

We tried every setting.

To the previous reviewer, maybe Blue doesn't support Vista much

because Vista sucks? Just go back to XP or upgrade to 7.

This WAS my third attempt at purchasing a microphone for some Web Based Multimedia Training that I am developing. The other two manufactures that I purchased were junk. They hissed and popped and just plain sucked! I was at my witts end. However, this Microphone by Blue Mic was an excellent investment. IT WORKS GREAT! I plugged it in and away we went. I use the Adobe products it worked out of the box with both Captivate and Presenter. I highly recommend this microphone.

"Nice Addition to Great Mic" 2010-03-16
By C. J. Bockay (Chicago IL USA)
I've already reviewed the Blue Snowball microphone and my feedback was quite favorable. I debated whether I wanted to spend an additional $40 on this shockmount because I did not detect any low frequency sounds coming through on my recordings. However, I did want something that would raise the height of the microphone. Even with fully extending the tripod that was provided with the Snowball mic, I was still bending my neck downward into the mic. This shockmount raises the mic a couple inches and it now is aligned perfectly with my mouth. Besides that, it really makes my studio look pretty sharp! I have not had any issues with the side tightening pin as others have reported.

Customer Buzz
 "Needs more work" 2009-12-13
By Todd M. Wilkinson (Avon,IN USA)
The shock part of this is fine, but the mount part needs a lot of work.

Problem 1) Once locked in, the mount part of it wobbles back and forth. It's loose and no amount of tightening will fix it, looks like they tried already and stripped out the screws at the plant. Now Blue was very accommodating and sent me a new one which is better but it still will wobbles about a 1cm back and forth at the top. I ended up using some super glue to stop this. At home this is ok, but in a studio or regular recording use it probably won't stand up for long.

Problem 2) The swivel arm, you just cant get it tight enough. The screw is made of very soft metal and the swivel is flat metal on flat metal so it never really gets right enough and a good push will knock it over. Once it's on a mic swivel arm I don't think it will last long. It might but I'm not sure.

Pro * It does the isolation part well and if I can keep it immobile it will do a fine job, just needs an update (version #2 ? )

 "The Rattler" 2009-06-13
By Brian J. Buehler (Michigan, USA)
This looked like a good product and a great match for the Snowball microphone. However, upon fastening the Snowball to the center ring microphone mount, I noticed a rattling noise anytime the assembly was moved. Turned out the metal bracket that the microphone mounts to was wobbly in the center (isolated) ring and would make a rattling sound if the shockmount was moved in the slightest. Tightening the screws that hold the mount to the inner ring seemed like a good idea except that the design kept things from clamping tighter together. Adding shims would have solved the problem but seems inappropriate given the price of this shockmount.

Since zero stars is not an option, I rate this product a one star and have returned it.

 "Beware!" 2009-05-15
By zaria (Dallas, Tx United States)
I love the snowball microphone. It does all that it is supposed to do. The Ringer is a sharp looking item which also does what it is supposed to do. The problem I have had with the Ringer is the thumb screw on the side. It is made of a soft metal and broke easily. All I need to make my Ringer work is a new thumb screw. I have REPEATEDLY emailed and explained the problem and requested a new thumb screw, which they have happily agreed to send me. But nearly six months later, I still do not have the simple thumb screw and I still am unable to use the Ringer with my Snowball. Recently, I have needed another microphone and I thought I would get the Baby Blue Bottle condenser mic, but after the awful experience I have had with Blue, I won't buy one. A company can have a great product but if they can't deliver on basic customer service, then they can not get my repeat business. I would not even be making this review if I had simply received a thumb screw so I could use the Ringer. Therefore, if you buy this product just be aware that if you have even a small problem you will be on your own to solve it.

"Great microphone!! Computer security limitations got in the way..." 2010-03-03
By Cammia Magal (Silverton. OR)
I've just started to do audio podcasting at work. This microphone did a great, quality job. I have no complaints at all about the sound.

However, I had a problem with the plug and play due to security restrictions on my computer at work. I work for a government agency and security's pretty tight. I have admin. rights to my computer but I still had to use someone else's computer who had higher rights than I did before I could use the microphone. I used Adobe SoundBooth. I tried it on my personal computer and laptop at home and it was instantly recognized. Just a heads-up for those whose IT departments have got things wrapped up pretty tight.

 "Fatal Flaw" 2010-02-27
By Michael Lovett (Lake Wylie, SC)
I'm using my Snowball under Windows 7. The unit is a new unit so it should have the "high gain" firmware update already installed (I can't be sure; the company says it isn't needed on models after a certain serial number but I can't find a serial number *anywhere* on this mic or the box)

Anyway, the problem, as others have mentioned, is that the mic's gain is just too little. To record voice, you have to have all your software input levels at 100% AND have the mic about 2 inches from your mouth. Then on playback, you will need strong speakers as well. If you can't get the mic close to your mouth, or you are trying to record a room of people, forget it.

I've sent an email to customer service, but no response.

This *could have been* a great product-- what were they thinking??

"Great Sound - Nearly Useless" 2010-02-23
By Ben
I've tried out quite a few USB microphones for various purposes, and the Blue Snowball was, by far, the one that I'm the most ambivalent about. It has a great quality, it's pretty much plug-and-play (in theory), and it's sexy. Unfortunately, I found its gain to be so low that it was almost inaudible unless held directly in front of the mouth (not always a possibility) or I spoke very, very loud (not good for extended consecutive sessions). Sitting 4-6 inches away on my desktop, the speech was nearly inaudible and literally incomprehensible even with the input turned all the way up and post-production volume boost. I found it humorous that the instructions tell the user that the mic is so sensitive that it should be kept several feet away from the sound source.

Further, this was not an isolated problem. Tech support forums were full of people with similar results, so much so that Blue released a firmware patch (compatible with both Mac and Windows OS). While it seemed to work well for most people, for a significant number of users -myself included- the installer simply refused to run. To elaborate, the download worked, but when opened, the installer's "run" button was be grayed out, prompting me to "connect my Blue Snowball," despite the fact that it was plugged in, powered up, and running. After several hours of restarts, re-plugs, and time wasted with Blue tech support, I ditched it as much on principle as out of frustration; a $140 mic shouldn't require hours and hours of work just to be usable.

Since not everyone had the problems I had, I can't say that I don't recommend the Snowball. What I would recommend is if you want a mic with great quality at a reasonable price, pick it up from someone with a generous return policy (having gotten mine from an Apple Store, I had no problem getting my money back). If you can get it to work better than I could, congrats: you've got yourself a great mic. I would actually have considered a four-star rating just because for people who get it to work it's great quality, but as I said, at $140, I think I can expect better.
