 "Driver and Computer Recognition Problems: Read MAudio's Site" 2010-02-20

I bought two of these. Both were defective, out of the box.



It seems the USB Interface has problems and when powered off and on, the computer does not recognize the unit, e.g., no plug and play. Even with Device Manager, you can not select the drivers and get the computer to recognize it. MAudio's site has a whole one page drill for doing this which involves diabling virus and spyware, uninstalling the program and drivers, re-downloading new drivers, then plugging in the unit and praying.



If you check out MAudio's Support Site, there must be over 100 really angry people who after 30 days (the warranty limit) are left with a paper weight. Add to this MAudio's Impossible to Get To Telephone Support (1 Hour on Hold) and 3 day email support turnaround, and I don't think I'll buy another MAudio product again. I will say this, the tech guy at MAudio was quite frank that the product sucked and I should just return it.



Thankfully, both of mine crashed within three weeks. The best advice is not to buy this unit (go with a firewire or PCIx unit) or never unplug it. One Star is not low enough.

I've work with this for over a year now, it got all the inputs and outputs I need, the recording quality is nice and clean, the effects on the headphones is the perfect thing to get my artist 'in the mood' to perform. M-Audio Fast Track Ultra got a driver issue, sometimes my pc just don't see it, I've tried and tested it with different systems and OS even 64bits systems. The second problem is input 1 & 2 controls behave more like a switch rather than a level control, very big difference in levels in just a small turn and the meters response to audio is difficult to measure. It's a nice product but should be $75 less, I still give it 4 stars.

I use win xp sp3, so I had to download the driver from maudio website, no big deal, but a little annoying. The product is fine, great sound, good features, great look and easy use.

I have had this unit for about a year, and have had mixed results--as others have--due to non-recognition of the unit when plugged-in or turned on.



I have found that the timing of activation/connection is important. The best results have been obtained after allowing my laptop to fully boot, logging in and waiting for the hard drive to settle down before turning the M-Audio on. There seems to be a delay in the loading of the drivers until everything else has loaded. I have also exited any unnecessary background programs.



I have also had mixed results in USB-powered mode(stereo-only). Sometimes the laptop fails to recognize the card if the (included) adapter is not attached. Perhaps some of my USB ports do not supply enough power. More testing needed.



Otherwise, a very powerful product, and a clean sound.

 "MONITOR VOLUME TOO LOW" 2009-08-01

This interface was bought to use with a MacBook. It was as easy as any other device to set up on the mac. I used a GT55 condenser mic to test, a mic I have used before in recording. It worked great with Garage Band and Logic Express. HOWEVER, I am a saxophone player. I need to be able to hear myself in the headphones. For some reason, there is not enough gain when you plug the headphones into the 1/4 inch head phone jack in the front.



I tried a couple other things, like coming out of that into a Royal headphone preamp I have also used in the studio, no better. I took a "line-out" of the back into my Roland keyboard amp and came out of THAT headphone jack. NOPE.



One set of headphones I tried are SONYs. The other set were BOSE QC3s. I don't think it was substandard headphones. (Mild sarcasm)



The last thing I will try is taking the head phones out of a SEPARATE amplifier "speaker" output.



M-Audio should REALLY look into a "physical" fix to this problem. I kind of feel like I could have saved my money by just using the Yamaha AW16G digital, stand alone recorder, which blows the mac set up off of the planet. (Because of the lack of monitoring capability of the FastTrack.)



My advice: Use the Yamaha AW16G, or similar device to record. Yeah, you have to menu-surf through little 2X4 inch lcd screens, but you can HEAR YOURSELF!!



Computers are better for typing documents and doing spreadsheets. Really.

 "Very Good for DJing, finicky for more ambitious applications" 2010-02-24

I use the Fast Track Pro ("the box") simply as a high sample rate D/A converter and pre-amp between my Macbook running OS X 10.4.11 and the M-Audio 1.7-2v2 driver, and my (fabulous) Mackie mixer feeding a pair of (fabulous) Mackie 500W powered speakers. (Note: a new driver update v1.8 is available.) In this application the sound quality is superb, which is why I use it and not a cheaper USB or Firewire interface or the native Macbook sound card (which sounds pretty good as laptop sound cards go).



Even in this simple application, I have found the box to be finicky, and on three occasions in three years I have had to power down the box, reboot my Macbook, then reboot the box and get everything working again (in the middle of a gig!). Things that crashed the Macbook while running the box were as simple as switching back and forth between iTunes and other applications, or the sound engineer doing something on his board that somehow got back into my rig and crashed the Macbook (!).



If you use the box as a glorified sound card like I do, the sound is superb and performance stable enough if you run nothing but the box driver and iTunes, and you dont mess with the PA equipment while youre DJing.



BTW, dont even think of connecting your unpowered dynamic mic to the box to mix in a voiceover; the channel input gain knob is highly non-linear and swings from inaudible to clipped (there is something wrong with the internal impedance matching between the input channels). Some DJs report better results using a condenser mic powered by the box's 48 V phantom power, but what do DJs know ;-) I much prefer mixing in my voiceover using the mic channel on the Mackie mixer.

We gave this to our 16-year-old son for Christmas, and he and his older brother have enjoyed exploring the possibilities of this pro-like device. It set up with GarageBand on our Macs easily, and has opened up new worlds of recording ideas - vocal and instrumental. I can't compare it to other interfaces, having no other experience, but it seems to me a high quality product.

This thing outputs a horrible hi pitched buzzing noises for me whenever my cpu is under heavy use. Tech support gave me beta drivers that blue screened my machine. Taking it back.

It's a good product.

I just think that there are some... kind of errors in the communication.



1.- In any place say that after installation you must left the device on. If you turn on the computer with the FTP off, the audio devices doesn't work. I spent a whole day trying to make the audio work and only the next day - 'cause i forgot to turn FTP off - I had all the resources working.



2.- The Pro Tools M-Powered 7 Demo it's a f****** trick. Why they didn't say that saving and exporting were deactivated? I could avoid install that useless deception.

Live Lite, even it's almost a demo too, didn't have those paranoid attitude.
