 "Good for the price" 2010-01-23
By D. Wyatt (Virginia, USA)
For a relatively inexpensive microphone that doesn't require any external equipment to convert it to USB, I think this is a good buy. I don't count the headphones in the equation since I think they are of poor quality, but I didn't care. I bought it for the mic.

I've only used it with Camtasia, and the audio levels seem low and I get lots of "popping" when I talk when I turn up the level on the mic too much. The levels can be adjusted after the fact in the software, but I didn't expect to run into those issues.

The documentation is almost exclusively about using Audacity, but has almost nothing about the mic itself. For instance, there's a black side and a gold side to the actual mic. Why is that? Do they have different sound pickup patterns? Which should I use? Should I angle it or set it upright when I talk for the best results?

I'm sure an audio expert would know the answers to these questions, but then again, an audio expert probably wouldn't be buying this mic, either. So I've just played with it to see what works.

For semi-pro recording of narration or podcasts by a non-audiophile, this mic works fine.

 "Great sound" 2009-07-26
By Carrie Heeter
I use this mic without the headset, for everyday Skyping and to teach online. Audio from my speakers doesn't interfere or cause feedback during live conversations. So the mic provides hands free, high quality audio.

When I purchased and started using it, people were happily surprised at how well my voice came through. An essential tool not just for podcasting but for other online audio as well.

 "Headphone Adapter not included" 2009-07-02
By Tyrone A. Williams
Works great, good price, one complaint; the headphone adapter is not included, which makes it impossible to use without making a separate purchase. I contacted the company and they do sell them for .47, cents plus three dollars shipping and handling - huh? Otherwise, a great product.

 "Podcasting made easy" 2008-10-03
By Dr. W. D. Davennport Jr. (Henderson, NV)
Alesis USB Mic Podcasting Kit with Headphones and Software

I needed a good quality microphone to produce some powerpoint presentations using Camtasia. The microphone easily installs and functions beautifully. It also works great with speech to text applications. For the applications I use, a boom microphone with a headset is uncomfortable and I do not always want to monitor the recording as it is being produced. The headphones are ok and I had a bit of a problem getting the computer configured to work with them with the microphone but once I did they work fine. A good product at a reasonable price.

 "NOT WORTH THE MONEY!" 2010-05-28
By Harrison Freemont (MERRITT ISLAND, FL, US)
The tripod fitting that holds the swivel mount is VERY fragile, made of plastic and easily broken - useless tripod!!!

$45 for a plastic bracket and a useless tripod and easily home made foam wind screen???

The bracket is ONLY useful item in this kit.

 "You're kidding, right?" 2010-04-11
By R. Iredale (Pacific Northwest, USA)
$41 for a rinky-dink tripod you can buy for $5 and a piece of foam? By the way, foam makes a poor windscreen; if you're serious about wind noise you need a furry-type covering (on my other mics I use products made by Windjammer).

I have to confess I don't have the Tascam device listed--I have the slightly smaller DR-07, which works beautifully, is 2/3 the price, and which has a built-in mic mount on the bottom.

If the listed Tascam unit needs the adapter to get a mic mount, then perhaps that explains part of the $41 price, but I if so I find the lack of a mic mount to then be a gross oversight.

 "Tascam DR1" 2009-11-24
By Michael B. Askew (Dallas, TX)
This is a great small package recorder for live rehearsals or performances. Also has the ability to take a feed from a mixer to get studio quality digital recording. The live recording is simple to use, and using a good sound editor (like NCH WavePad)turns out pretty good audio. It is very sensitive.

 "The Curate's Egg" 2009-02-21
By J. R. Bauer
Some parts are excellent. The bracket (a.k.a "tripod adaptor") that snaps onto the DR1 is high-quality and well-designed. The DR1 snaps securely into it, and it allows complete access to all controls and connectors. The microphone-stand adaptor is likewise well-built and secure.

It is the tripod itself that is questionable. While it is of reasonable quality, the flexible legs are a too stiff. This works well enough to hold the DR1 above a horizontal surface, but that's about it. The tripod's function would be better fulfilled with a Gorillapod Joby GP1-A1EN Gorillapod Flexible Tripod (Grey), a similarly-sized device with much more adaptable legs.

The windscreen is a piece of foam, sized and shaped to fit over the microphone end of the DR1. It works, but how could it not? Anyone could build one with foam and some tape.

I've used the bracket with a full-sized camera tripod, and on a mic stand with the mic-stand adaptor. I have used the tripod with a small camera, but not with the DR1. I have not yet needed the windscreen.

All together, this is a functional set of accessories. The one necessary component is the bracket; the others (tripod, mic-stand adaptor, and windscreen) can be purchased from other places or easily macguyvered; they merely help justify the price.

The list price ($75) is not justifiable, and only serves to make the "real" price seem reasonable. The (current) "real" price (about $50) is still too high, but how else can one acquire the bracket?

 "Essential for your DR1." 2009-01-29
By James Gruszynski (Margate, FL United States)
My only complaint is that these accessories are so essential they really should come with the Tascam DR1 recorder! I am a amateur musician and I use my DR1 to record performances and jam sessions. These accessories provide you the ability to mount the recorder on a tripod or mic stand so that you can position it directly in front of the singers and instruments so you can record the best sound. I found it nearly impossible to get quality recordings from the DR1 without this kit.

"This needs to be in every drummer's arsenal of sidearms..." 2009-05-08
By Andrew P.
This comes with lots of felts, for cymbal, hi hat, and clutch. It also comes with cymbal sleeves so that your cymbals aren't touching the metal of the stand. I didn't think it made a difference till I put them on, really makes a difference. Also comes with stuff I don't know what to do with, snare cords, tension rod washers, and a leather impact pad. I guess I'll figure out, though. Anyways, for less than $10, this is a great deal. GET IT.

 "Over-Priced !!! Not effective !!!" 2009-12-01

 "Very Effective Tool" 2009-11-12
By J. Foster (Houston, TX)
Although the price seemed a little high for the particular type of tool, I must admit that this is the most effective and simple record cleaner I have used. I often pick up records in thrift stores that are undamaged but dirty - every thing from heavy dust to mold from a record sleeve that had become wet during some past flood. If you follow the straightforward directions, this does an very effective job of picking the debris out of the record grooves.

"vastly improves the sound of your old vinyl" 2009-07-04
By Angela (Madison, WI)
I purchased this to clean up my vinyl, as I was also purchasing the AT-PL120 turntable. My LPs have been spun innumerable times, and most date from the 60's-80's. I originally wanted an expensive machine that would remove all the debris from my records, which hissed and popped quite vigorously. As I could not afford that product, I selected the Stanton Record Cleaner Kit. The soft brush is excellent at whisking away dust and debris from the vinyl grooves. The applicator fluid is quite helpful, as well. The kit has vastly improved the sound of my records, and I am pleased with the results.

"brush fibers get matted down" 2009-06-12
By Michael Ramirez
It cleans records as advertised and does a fair job. The brush works well dry at removing dust and other particles. The fluid is also effective. However, after repeated use I've noticed that the fibers on the area of the brush where the fluid was applied have become matted down and thus are less effective at reaching into the groves.
