Dean Playmate Mini Acoustic Guitar, 1/2-Size

Dean Playmate Mini Acoustic Guitar--Half Size, Full Sound

The Dean Playmate JT-J is an incredible acoustic guitar for a beginner, child, or traveler. This half-sized sized guitar features traditional construction with a set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and chrome hardware. As small as this guitar is, it's no slouch when it comes to sound or construction. Take it on the road or play it at home, the Playmate JT-J acoustic guitar won't let you down.

Looks as good as it sounds.

Solid Body and Features
Featuring a hardwood laminated linden body and a solid spruce top for a superior blend of rich tones, this guitar also has a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard—complete with 18 frets even at the 25.5-inch scale. The Dean Playmate JT-J acoustic guitar also comes with pearl dot inlays, sealed tuners and celluloid bindings. This is a six-string guitar that uses steel strings. This specific Playmate JT-J acoustic guitar comes in satin natural.

Excellent for beginners and for travel.

Quality Materials
The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. It is also the most delicate part of any high quality acoustic guitar. The grade and thickness of the wood used, as well as the bracing structure, have a huge impact on the instruments sound. The idea of applying an arch or curve to the top is appealing because the added strength of an arched top should allow for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. This is why Dean Guitars takes the care it does when making every guitar in its line.

Ideal for Travel
The Playmate JT-J acoustic guitar is ideal for travel, whether just next-door for a barbeque, down the street to a local function, or across the country. With the right case (sold separately), there isn't anywhere you can't go. The JT-J acoustic guitar is small enough to fit into overhead bins or next to you on the tour bus.

What Kind of Guitar Does Your Child Need?
Starting with an acoustic guitar is the best way to go. It is less expensive and it starts them out on the traditional way to play guitar. An acoustic guitar like the Dean Playmate JT-J is a good starting point because of its small size and solid dependability.

Features:

  • Linden Body
  • 18 3/4" scale
  • Maple neck
  • Covered Tuners
  • Celluliod Binding
  • Mosaic Rosette
  • Designed for very young children to learn the basic guitar skills.
  • Gloss Natural

 "Toy Guitar" 2010-10-05
By Slobo Mitic
This is a toy guitar built with real guitar parts. It cannot be properly tuned since it's not made to be played. It is great for kids that want to look cool and make some noise. Tone deaf kids and adults will love it for its cool looks.

 "Dean Playmate Product Review" 2010-04-14
By Mark Cataldo (Malden, Ma USA)
The Dean Playmate 1/2 size guitar is for children from 5 to 8 years of age that are interested in learning how to play the guitar. Other viewers say that it's more than a toy, and that's somewhat true. You should buy this instrument, with the intent of having your child learn how to play the guitar. It has normal tuning pegs, and acoustic guitar bridge pins, just like a any other acoustic guitar.

For a $45.00 guitar, we know that Dean isn't gonna put a lot of time, and detail into this instrument, with that being said, my only complaint is that the action is a little high for a beginner. Maybe the extremely light strings will makeup for that. On the other hand the strings will break rather easily, so make sure your child doesn't over turn the tuning pegs, or the strings will break.

 "Sounds like a Ukulele" 2009-08-17
By C. Warro
I recently purchased a guitar for me to learn and my children were so intrigued that they wanted to do something while I was playing. I wanted to get an inexpensive guitar that was appropriate for there size since they were 5. It's the perfect size for them but it does not sound like a guitar at all. It's more like a Ukulele. It is worth the money and its fun for the kids but do not expect to have the same sounds.

"Good deal for the price" 2009-05-22
By Brad Watson (Wellsville, NY)
I purchased this 1/2 scale guitar for my daughter's 6th birthday. A couple of years ago I had purchased a 3/4 scale acoustic guitar made by Lauren, and I have never been able to really get it in tune or keep it in tune. Since my daughter has shown interest in playing the guitar, I figured that I needed to get something that at least sounded like a normal guitar. In talking with a local music store owner, he mentioned that the only brand that he has good luck with when it comes to child-sized guitars is Dean, so I decided to try the Dean Playmate.

So far, so good with the Dean Playmate. The finish on the guitar is nice, the tuners seem very solid, the shape of the tailpiece gives it a very distinctive look, and the size is perfect for a small child. It is a little bit hard for me to play since the spacing between the frets is so small, but my daughter seems to have no problem with it. I have a new set of strings for it, but I am letting her play around with it for now with the original strings, as it seems to stay in tune just fine with the originals.

Overall, I would say for the money, it is worth every penny for a child's use, especially when their hands are just too small for a standard size guitar.

 "Mediocre at Best!" 2010-08-30
By Sail Away
This amp is tiny. It is powered by a single 9 volt battery, and is rated to output 1 watt of power. The sound produced is "tinny" and of very poor quality. This amp is essentially a toy. If this price range is your absolute upper price limit, or if this is a gift for a child who has little interest in taking lessons and improving, then by all means buy one.

However, if you can spend just a little more, and/or if the guitar player who will be using it has any desire to clearly hear and enjoy the results of his or her guitar playing skills, then I STRONGLY recommend an entry-level plug-in amplifier. For example, you might look at any number of the entry-level amps that put out about 10-15 watts of power. They are NOT that much more expensive, and the sound they output is 100%++ better for this price range! What is the point of playing electric guitar if the amp produces sounds that are awful?

In summary, this Fender Mini Deluxe Amp is barely better than a toy. Don't waste your money. There are other (BETTER) options which cost only a little bit more, and which will be MUCH more rewarding.

Here is a link to an example of a better amplifier investment for the beginner electric guitar player (and there are several others in this price range):

The total size of this amp is 3'' by 4''. I was surprised how potable it was. It is great for traveling. You can carry it throughout the house if you want to play in a certain room. I play bass guitar and it works great with my rogue vb100 (which is the best bass there is)! This amp is good enough for a professional musician whether they are playing bass or guitar!

I bought this for my 11 yr old grandson. He has a larger one for use at home, same brand, and thinks this one is great. His guitar teacher asked for the information so that he could order one since he travels to all of his students' homes for lessons. We are all very pleased with this amp and would recommend it to others.

 "Very nice little amp..." 2009-10-05
By Joseph Guzman (Chicago)
I have had this little amp since 2007 and like it a lot.

Sometimes, you just want to get out somewhere different to play some tunes, but do not want or have the ability to lug around an amp. Now, although I do have a great battery powered Crate amp, this little practice amp is just right when you want to play to yourself and not fiddle around with cables and amps.

I have taken this to work for some quick plucking, and I like it. I have also brought it along to a goofing around gig session, and my buddies dug it a lot. Don't expect big sound from this, as it wasn't built for that. It provides decent amplification for intimate surroundings...but does get "dirty" when the volume on the guitar is turned up...which is quite cool. It will start to "Buzz & crackle" when the battery is low, so always carry a spare. Takes little room and looks cool hanging off the guitar and some have inquired how am I playing the guitar without an amp? I used it for lessions at a guitar school, where all around me were acoustics, and I stood out with my little amp.

The on/off switch is easily bumped on sometimes if you are not careful while in the guitar gig bag. What I have done is to disconnect a battery terminal while not in use and problem solved.

I highly recommed this mini practice amp for a backup to your usual arsenal of amps.

"It's good for what it is" 2009-09-13
By Rod Levell
First off, the price from this seller is a good one. Even with added shipping, I don't think you could find it cheaper anywhere. The seller ships very promptly too! I got this to practice in front of my computer with some guitar programs. As mentioned before, it sure beats lugging the amp from upstairs around every time I need it.

The good: Very portable, batteries seem to last a while if you remember to turn it off when you're done, decent sound from a very small speaker, not noisy at all.

The bad: The jack stem seems just a tad undersized. Mine has fallen out when playing once. But I've had amp cords do the same thing. The speaker housing rotates on a caster so it ends up pointing down to the floor a lot. I'd much prefer it to be always pointing straight out. The speaker is small, there's no getting around that, so don't expect booming lows. But for what it is, it works pretty well.

Having used mine for a week now, I would buy it again if I needed to. It's good for what it is.

"Have had two and not liked them much" 2009-07-04
By chuggy (south of the border)
Wanted to like these, so much so that I bought a second one, after the first one had a poor on/off switch that lasted only about six months. The construction of the switch is flimsy, they are awkward if your jack is on the bottom of your guitar because the amp turns around as you play and directs the sound where you probably don't want it. It can be easily bumped if you want to sit down and play too. Also, the battery doesn't seem to last long before the sound starts to deteriorate and the volume between the two I had were not consistent. The first one that had the bad switch was much louder than the second one I bought.

Don't expect too much from this little sucker but don't expect too little either. it's surprisingly loud running on that kind of power and it's as portable in a small book bag. dont look to hold a concert for this item but rather let it be something to practice with if you're just sitting at home and you dont want to lug around any "beginner/training" amps and/or wake the neighbors because you want to hear yourself (you would need to buy an 1/4" to mini adapter).

"Awesome sound with cheap particle board construction" 2009-02-06
By D. Presser
I wasn't sure what to expect when I received the mini amp sound wise. I was surprised at how good this small amp actually sounds when I played on it.

Straight out of the shipping box my amp rattled like there was something loose inside the amp itself so I opened up the back and found 1 of the clamps that holds the speakers had came loose inside. I tried to screw the clamp into the same original hole but the particle board had been destroyed in that spot (stripped). I made another hole and reattached the clamp for the speaker, closed the back up again and it plays wonderfully.

For $50+ it sounds fantastic if you don't have to mess with the screws or the cheap particle board construction its great for quiet practice.

Can use batteries or purchase a wall outlet adaptor for it.

This thing is amazing

The sound that this amp produces is so good you'll be amazed, it kind of bluesy twangy to very good grunge rocky distortion.

However you need to crank the volume up to get the very best of sounds, it is a bit wide for some guitar cases so carrying it in the case depends on your guitar case.

Very good practice amp, true to its bigger brother

"Great little amp for quiet practise or headphone monitor" 2007-09-21
By JD (SF, CA)
I like to practise my rock and blues late at night and do not want to upset my wife and kids, so I tried a Pocket Rock-it, but found it to crack and snap, very annoying. So I found this affordable option and I am very pleased with the sound. It is only for quiet practise, or as I use it more often, for use with a set a headphones. The required 9v battery is still working after a month of use, probably 15 hours. It sounds great, and for the money there is nothing else out there.

The only suggestion I would have is to provide an option for a mini-jack for headphones so an adapter to the 1/4" receptacle is not needed. But I would definitely highly recommend it for anyone that has similar needs to mine.
