This pedal is a steal for something made this sturdy with a true bypass. Reviews of other pedal brands (BOSS in particular) always mention being "built like a tanks" and similar language, but this thing is built like the black box of an airplane. I'd expect it to survive a nuclear war.



The sound? It sounds like a Big Muff. I'm sure some people can tell the difference, but I'm not one of them. Even though I love the sound, people not familiar with the Big Muff or even with fuzz pedals in general should try this (or the full size muff) at a guitar store before blindly ordering one over the Internet. It is not an overdrive, not a distortion pedal. It is a fuzz, and a very particular fuzz at that. There are plenty of videos on youtube that demonstrate what a Big Muff sounds like. You either love that sound, or hate it.



The controls work really well. With the sustain and tone all the way up, and the volume at dead 0, the pedal is absolutely silent. There is no "leakage" of noise like with some pedals. You can get the same tone at any level from 1 to 10.

This pedal is awesome. It sounds just like its namesake Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (USA) but is much smaller.



Physically, the pedal is slightly larger than most single-effect pedals, but easily fits on a pedalboard. Slightly larger than a ProCo Rat. Very sturdy construction, doesn't feel like a cheapie at all.



Sonically, it has very creamy smooth distortion (read: not suited for crunchy metal) and sounds just like some recordings you may have heard it on, including tracks by Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine. If you love shoegazer-style wall-of-sound distortion, this is the pedal for you.



I've wanted a Big Muff for years, and I'm glad I finally bought this mini version.

At age 12 my friend let me borrow his father's big muff pedal, it was my first experience with any kind of pedal, I feel in love instantly. Fast forward 12 years later I finally got around to getting my own.



Too me it sounds just like the older big muffs, it's simple to use and the size of the pedal fits much nicer on my pedal board than the old school enclosures. It's such a classic sound.



If this were ever to break or be stolen I wouldn't hesitate to replace it.

Consider the distortion sound of Cream, the Doors, and ZZ top. That buzzy, psychedelic type sound is what this pedal does. Unfortunately, that's about all it does. However, if you want to have the perfect "break on through" guitar intro sound, this is absolutely the pedal for you. Quality-wise it's awesome, and if I needed that sound I would definitely own one again. I got rid of mine to purchase some other gear that served a wider variety of functions, and honestly I haven't missed it, because I'm not in a Doors cover band or anything.

This pedal is great. The Sustain knob (controls dist./sust.) has a wide range of choices. You want a great 70's dist. or a bit more heavy? Just adjust the knob! AWESOME and very smooth sustain, and the tone is killer from this pedal. I only had to tweak the knobs a bit before I had "that" feeling iin the back of my neck. The one that says, "That's it right there!"



The size of this pedal is nice too, it's a bit wider than say a BOSS, but it doesn't take up too much room. The box is pretty sturdy, it will take some abuse!



Alone or with a few effects, this is a great pedal

There's a lot of different types of fuzzes out there and it's really a personal decision which one to choose. With this one you'll get Jack White type sounds, which happens to be really useful in my pedal chain. Volume, tone, and sustain knobs make it very customizable. The build is good and rugged and will stand up to abuse. If you want that classic and familiar sound that a lot of famous players have popularized, you'll want this pedal.



But.



This design is terrible. I hate that you have to buy the EH proprietary format power adapter - I have several normal type plugs that most pedals use, and I still have to buy a new adapter for this. Also, I really hate how big this is. It's just another thing to deal with when transporting your equipment. I don't know if the Big Muff Pi Nano is true to the sound, but it might be something to check out if you don't want a monster-sized pedal. This is the biggest pedal in most guitarists' pedal chains.



In conclusion, if you want this specific sound you'll want to buy this pedal, but you're still going to complain about having to buy the EH adapter and about the sheer size of this thing.

This is a great pedal! Before the only distortion I had available was through my amp, which had a built in gain modulator, and it was nothing short of a noise maker.



With the Big Muff though, I found that it really picks up the finer intricacies of my playing more than my cheap-o amp ever could. This pedal has a great sound, and is nostalgic of the 1970's, but especially the 1990's.



I'm a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, and this is more or less THE pedal if you're looking for that sound. For a good example of it's capabilities, listen to a song called "Rocket."



Well, I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this, because I'm only just now beginning to get into upping my musical arsenal, but I was really happy when this arrived. It's very hardy and sturdy, and it just sounds great. Great for solos because of it's amazing sustain. At some points it feels like a violin!



Anyway, I'm really happy with this purchase, and it really wasn't that much money. The only thing I would suggest is making sure that you have a well grounded amp. Otherwise there might be a lot of white noise when you aren't playing loudly.

I have played through this for over 15 years and I will tell you right now, get a big amp. Get 2 amps and split the signal, even. You want to have the biggest amp you can when using this pedal. Otherwise it will come off sounding frail instead of "Frail and Bedazzled".



Otherwise this pedal conjures up a beastly reference, and it should. I have been in a couple bands where I just plugged this into the amp and played my riffs. The free drinks and loose women followed shortly thereafter.



If you're looking for stinging yet rumbly fuzz, this is the pedal you need. I only wish it went up to "11".

I absolutely LOVE my USA Big Muff fuzz pedal! I owned the black Russian Big Muff, and I sold it - the USA model sounds better to my ears. This is NOT a subtle effect - it takes your tone, pushes you down in the mud, and walk off with it's arm around it, like stealing your girlfriend... and that's part of the charm! It is the schoolyard bully of non-boutique fuzz pedals. The Dunlop Fuzz Face is abit more transparent, so if you don't want something as extreme, you might like that better. I am a happy Electro-Harmonix customer, and have no hesitation in recommending their products.

this is a great pedal, by far the best bang for your buck if you want a fuzzy distortion pedal. and it's certainly the most versatile non-modded Muff. everything i don't like about the standard muff fuzz can be mitigated with the options on the tone wicker.



the only reason i was hesitant to buy a muff in the first place was that i think the standard muff tone can be a little muddy and on the bassy side of the tonal palate. i was borrowing my roomates russian version (the big camo green one), and basically had the tone turned all the way treble. it was too "full" for my taste; playing thru single coils, and switching to distorted sound, there was still a tonal "shift" to the bass end of the spectrum, even with the tone dialed to the treble. (like when you turn the volume down on your guitar and lose some of your high-end response - the tone circuitry in most muffs i've played through muffle your tone in a similar respect).



with the tone wicker, you can add extra top-end boost. my favorite, tho, is the tone switch - you can bypass ALL of the tone circuitry. this leaves a full spectrum coming thru the pedal, and almost allows for a more "transparent" fuzz (if a fuzz could ever be called transparent). now i switch to my fuzzy, distorted sound and my overall tone is fuzzed - WITHOUT any tonal spectrum shift!



i compared this side-by-side with the russian version, and in standard muff mode, it's pretty similar, not a difference i'd be able to pick out unless they were side by side. but it is NOT as full. so if you want a full-sounding muff, this might not be the muff for you (from what i've heard, the tone-wicker is based on the NYC reissue).

This pedal is very well constructed. It is attractive and a good size. It sounds great and you can achieve a pretty decent variety of tones - from slight fuzz to full on overdrive destruction. The tone switch acts mostly as a boost, which adds too much noise for my liking. The tone wicker switch definitely brightens up the sound giving you a more defined high-end, but it also adds noise. If I have both switches on and everything maxed, it sounds bad A$$ but is just too noisy for anything but goofing around. I find I have to really limit everything to get a truly usable effect.



I would recommend using some kind of noise suppressing pedal or equalizer after this big muff.



I would probably get the classic big muff pi next time, because the switches add too much noise with not enough benefit.



I can't figure out how to change the 9v battery! I'm assuming you have to unscrew the pedal, but this seems so inconvenient. I suggest you get a power supply for this if you don't already have one.

I've owned just about every muff. No Triangle or Civil War. But this is my favorite muff thus far. Way more versatile than any other muff. The switches involment in the the circuit really isn't too elaborate, but then again all bypasses aren't. I love wicker on and tone off. Cuts like a buffalo. I hate to have a bunch of fuzz's and distortions in my chain, but its there right next to a Keeley Fuzz Head, a Analogman Peppermint Fuzz, and a TS-9 modded to an 808 w/ Brown that I modded myself. I love this Muff! I can't wait to see what they do next. Plus... These new EHX pedals are build tough as nails and full true bypass. If you like muffs, you'll really like this one. If you didn't like muffs before, you'll probably like the wicker feature, it makes it far more clear and pronounced and less of a glob a goo and more distortion/ fuzz friendly. I give it four stars, because the five is only meant meant for devices that you just freak out and half to have, for me the Keeley Fuzz Head is a five, I love that thing.

I play a Gibson Sg Standard through a Vox AC30. I'm sure this pedal (like all of them) will sound different with a different set up. But my fav set up is playing with the wicker off and the tone at 12 o'clock, with the sustain bet 9-11 o'clock and it sounds best played through my bridge pickups (humbuckers).



My other fav setting is with the tone switch off. This releases an incredibly rich spectrum of tone, and it sounds awesome with all the pick up selections



I'm not much of a soloist, or I would use the tone wicker more. You can make it go from a nasel whine sound to a bassy ballsy sound. I know these descriptions may not help much, but rest assured this pedal has great variety in the range of sound. Its a great pedal.



If your not into solos much you might want to get a sov tech, since they are a little cheaper. But I think they might be discontinued, which might make them more expensive now. I dunno.

I've only had this for a few weeks, and used it on decently windy days. I find with this on, the quality is much better with it off, so I just keep it on the whole time. I was shocked at how simple it was, it came in a small bag, really tight knit and velcros over the videomic. Simple yet useful. The hair falls off a lot though, but is fun to annoy people with. Not much to say, but it's a great product for the microphone... but doesn't do the job of "professional" work

I have to say that this used with my Rode NTG2 Shotgun did not produce very good results. I was recording dialog outside, and in my experience it simply did not cut the wind to where I could use the audio. In other words the wind took over. In the end we had to stand between two buildings while using the Deadcat. I know Rode also makes a blimp, but I'm not sure I want to try that unless I could try it first.



I've had great experiences with other Rode products, but not this.
