The DigiTech Metal Master has arrived - head-bangers rejoice! The Metal Master Distortion pedal is a full-featured pedal that delivers DigiTech's exclusive multi-distortion technology, offering users seemingly endless distortion types that can be morphed into a variety of combinations. There's also a normal signal out and an output for cabinet modeling, for use live, or in the studio. Every day more and more players switch to X-SeriesTM stompboxes. Perhaps it's because they are so versatile; it may be because they're the most powerful stomboxes in the world, or maybe it's just because they sound great! Whatever the reason, Korn, Stone Sour, Nickleback, Disturbed and many other top bands are all making the switch. The DigiTech Metal Master is the world's most advanced heavy metal distortion pedal. DigiTech's exclusive AudioDNATM technology is what makes the Metal Master more than your standard distortion stompbox. Rather than working from a single distortion type circuit with tone controls, the Metal Master features a Voice knob which morphs between three totally different metal distortion types. This gives you a wide variety of different metal distortion sounds that can be dialed in quickly and easily.

 "Ok Distortion" 2009-12-31
By frenchiefellow
I got this pedal a couple of years ago for my birthday, and, for the most part, I've been happy with it when I play it with guitars.

First off, you can't really produce much of what I would consider authentic "Death Metal Distortion", the distortion is kind of heavy, but is not much heavier than some of the stuff you can get from a normal distortion pedal.

When I first got this pedal, it had an enormous amount of feedback, so much in fact that I had to turn the volume and master knobs on my amp to around 1 or 2. Thankfully, with time, the feedback was died out a bit. The sounds you can produce are decent, not great, but are good enough for $50.

I'm not much of a guitarist (even though I fool around with it), I'm a quite experienced bass player, and I must say this pedal sounds terrible with basses. When you play notes in succession, its hard to hear whether you are playing a chord or whether you are playing separate notes as they all mesh together. Most notes are too low (especially when you play 6 string like I do) to decipher and end up sounding like garbage. I do not recommend for a bass player.

Overall, its an okay pedal, kind of muddy though, good if you can't dish out for more expensive pedals, but it will do.

 "Digitech Death Metal" 2008-12-08
By Benjamin Gordon
The death metal pedal works well with some amplifiers but can sound terrible with other amps. My biggest qualm with this pedal is that it does not have a gain knob to adjust the intensity of distortion. The distortion can be overbearing since it always has that death metal sound to it. I would recommend that you make sure it sounds good with your amp before purchasing.

"Good price, but has a major flaw" 2010-03-12
By A. J. Gardin (Northern California)
This thing rips. I am a beginner guitar player and I wanted something heavy and chunky sounding to mess around with. It delivers there, and for the price, i still look back on the purchase favorably.

The problem is that the pedal itself wont toggle for me. I turn it on, and I can not turn it off without resetting the battery --which really sucks if you want to go from clean to heavy or back again in a fluid motion while jamming.

It may just be mine, I might have gotten the lemon, but you get what you pay for. --That aside, i think this makes a good heavy sound and is good for messing about--considering the price.. its just not stage worthy

 "Perfect for me" 2009-05-22
By Zachary Eck (Texas, US)
This thing is great for me, just playing for fun and using it to get an awesome distortion sound. For the price it can't get any better, I haven't even started to explore the possibilities with the controls, but when I moved the mid knob (not the mid freq) up too high it just started whining really loudly, and when one of the cables isn't fitted into the in/output correctly it'll do the same thing (just a little bit of pressure would do it). I haven't gotten my new cables yet and being able to play with it without being plugged into an amp was a lifesaver, I just put in an adapter and some computer speakers and I was good to go. Once I started playing with it I was having to much fun and I started figuring out how to play the Star Spangled Banner, hours of endless enjoyment just playing with a sound effect XD

For somebody who doesn't play gigs, this is a perfect starter pedal, and for the price it can't be beat. It only looses the 1 star because of the occasional high-pitched screech/wail/whine that it does if the settings aren't right or the cables aren't aligned in the plugs correctly.

EDIT: I got the power cord for it today and it works great, but I wanted to add that 9V batteries are very easy to change/remove once you figure it out, just push one of the black buttons in where the pedal pivots, a long thin screwdriver or pen works great. I had some more fun with it today, it really is hours of enjoyment in one little plastic pedal!

 "Good sound, bad feedback" 2009-05-18
By William T. Smith (Hunkered down in a zombie-proofed fortress)
I bought the Behringer Heavy Metal Distortion UM300 pedal two months ago when I was looking for a good, heavy distortion sounds, and I went to Behringer first because of the quality and affordability of their Behringer Bass Overdrive BOD100 I'd gotten many months earlier. The pedal gives a good sound, but unfortunately produces a loud buzzing when it's on and you're not playing, spoiling portions of a song which are intended to be silent and just generally being a bit unpleasant unless you turn it off immediately. The rang of sounds it can produce are good, and certain settings minimize the buzz, but if you need performance-quality distortion, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Great for practice or hobby, I wouldn't suggest it on-stage.

"Great pedal for low budget!!" 2008-01-05
By Chris B. (North Dakota)
I had a Behringer Tube Distortion pedal that I used to think sounded great. I paid thirty dollars for it online and it took me several months to figure out what I had been missing. Even with Ibanez cheap stock pickups, I found that, just by turning the gain knob, you go from Sweet Child O' Mine distortion to Crazy Train metal sounds. Two totally different styles of distortion and this pedal nailed them. I have used Boss pedals before and it's true that they are higher quality. But they are also about $80-$100 more. So if you are on a short supply of cash but want some great rock distortion, this is definetly your best bet.

Another little interesting thing about this pedal is that it has a blue LED light that can actually be used as effect lighting. It gives off a cool eerie glow that, while not making the pedal perform any better, adds another degree of coolness to this pedal.

Simply plug this palm-sized headphone guitar amp directly into your guitar, and enjoy serious guitar sound anywhere, anytime. It’s even available in three different sound styles: VOX AC30, Classic Rock, based on a UK-made amplifier head, and Metal, based on a California-made high-gain amplifier head. Even with its ultra-compact size, amPlug perfectly reproduces the complex and warm distortion that is distinctive of a vacuum tube, as well as the powerful high gain produced by a large amp stack. Using all new analog modeling technology, amPlug delivers full-fledged amp sound. Plugs directly into your guitar—a great-sounding headphone guitar amp that gives you serious sound fast. With its completely analog design, great care was also taken with amPlug's gain circuitry. The AC30 uses two natural-sounding gain stages to reproduce the distinctive AC30 tone. Metal uses two stages of ultra-high gain plus a mid-cut circuit, giving you modern metal high-gain sound anywhere and anytime. Even the circuit response of the original amp is simulated completely. The simulation extends not only to the response of the tone circuits, but also to the way in which the high frequency and gain are affected when you turn down the volume control of the guitar. Every detail has been faithfully reproduced. amPlug can be used in numerous ways...With up to fifteen hours of battery life, it's easy to take amPlug anywhere. In addition to practicing at home, it's a great way to warm up before a live performance or on the road. There's also an AUX input jack so you can jam along with your CD/MP3 player.

 "Small Package, Big Sound!" 2010-04-19
By R. Mitchell (Cherryvale, KS. United States)
I knew how big, or should I say 'small' this thing was. I had stocked it at our facility. I wanted something I could take into other rooms or to take with me when I travel. I currently play through a Peavey 5150, and it's not very mobile. When I got the Vox Metal Guitar Headphone Amp and plugged it in, I was amazed at how big the sound coming out of it was! This thing really rips, and I don't turn the volume all the way up. It's no match for the 5150, but if you are thinking about spending your hard earned money to buy this, you won't be disappointed.

 "Amazing...enough said." 2010-02-27
By Metal Fanatic (Maine)
Great product. The lead tone is phenominal....some of the best I've heard ever....this includes 100 watt amps. Only complaint is the rhythm tone is kinda crunchy....more overdriven...not really distorted. But it won't bother you anyhow....I just prefer a little more gain. The battery life is pretty good, just replaced em' for the first time in 4 months of constant use. It get's pretty loud for a mini amp and if you're a diehard metal head who appreciates anything from slayer to killswitch engage...than this amp is for you.

I read the other reviews here; in turn buying the product. I went from being decent and non-religious about practicing to having a need to practice and the ability. My other amp is 100 watts. This is an inspiring piece of machinery ; the tone is astounding and the features I give 5 stars. The aux hook up is brilliant. Enough reviewing, time to continue upping my technique! Fast shipping, marvelous seller. you will not regret buying this.

 "Godlike Mobile Riffage" 2009-07-29
By Mark Anderson (New York, NY)
After reading about this gadget from a number of reliable sources, I went ahead and gambled the 40 ducats on it and couldn't be happier. The first time I popped this little doohicky into my Ibanez RG, plugged in the phones, maxed the gain and slowly raised the volume I was nearly slammed into the wall by forcefield of metal madness. I attacked the Phrygian scale then glided into my favorite riffs. Power chords: BANG! Who knew you could get such big amp sound out of this tiny plastic box?

Substitute a plain old minijack cable between the phones jack and anything with speakers and you have an improvised amp with sound as big as the remote speakers allow.

It also has a minijack auxiliary input so you can jam along to your iPod or PC output in virtually total silence. No more annoying neighbors banging on your walls when you get the urge to shred at 2:00 a.m.

It would be nice if there was some reverb on the device, but metal holds up well with big gain so I'm not complaining. The device also has a tendency to swing around while you play -- if you are a highly mobile shredder this might annoy you (but can easily be fixed with a bit of gaffers tape).

If you're on a budget or just want to jam loudly in peace, you could do much worse than this. Throw one in a gig bag with a set of decent phones (and an iPod if you want) and you may as well be carrying a pocket sized amp with you. Note also that this was designed for METAL -- it's all about the gain. If you are looking for something bluesy or some other wimpy sound, consider the other amPlugs.

"Very useful pedal to have." 2010-04-10
By anonymous
I have a lot of pedals... In fact, I have 2 distortion and 2 overdrive pedals (though only the MT2 and the OD3 are regularly in my rig.) This pedal won't give you a "cranked up tube stack" sound. No... Instead, it's very edgy and smooth as can be. It has a mid-sweep knob on it to help sculpt your tone. I usually use it as a mid-boost for solos. You'll find that you get amazing sustain and a huge sound that you won't be able to replicate (easily... I'm sure the huge Boss distortion box comes close, but for the price...) with any other pedal.

"Dial in DimeBag's tone for a fraction of cost." 2010-02-25
By Bryan Smith (Norhern Indiana, USA)
I am amazed at the price of this pedal, it could easily list for much more for what it does. The ability to tweak the EQ of the distortion allows me to 'tune' the sound and mimic the Metallicia sound as well as the Pantera sound in one pedal. Boutique pedals have nothing on this pedal.

Customer Buzz
 "Still the best." 2010-02-11
By Doc Taz (NYC area, USA)
I've had this for about 11 years now. Even with some of the newer metal pedals on the market, this pedal still sells well. Not to mention, it's probably also one of the most modded pieces out there. Any number of mods can be found online to change the sound. They're usually on the side of improving the stock tone, which I'm happy with.

I've always liked the parametric EQ on this pedal. The variable midrange allows me to get Marshall or Mesa flavors. For most metal/hard rock music, the gain range is enough for me. If I need yet more gain, I punch it up with an overdrive, or a compressor pedal for a cleaner boost. Even without a boost, I can use it for death metal. I think if you play the tighter, more technical styles, it's better not to have too much gain anyhow.

"One of the greatest distortion pedals ever" 2009-06-17
By J. Nielsen (Corona, CA United States)
Note that this pedal is meant to be used with an amp that is on a clean setting. The pedal is meant for playing metal (like Metallica), or metal-ish punk rock (like Pennywise, Strung Out, The Offspring). It does this very well. If you don't want to buy a tube amp like a Peavey 6505 or a Mesa Boogie, this pedal will get you pretty close for far less money. Of course nothing is better than a real tube amp, but this pedal is pretty cool. I combine mine with a $400 65-watt solid state amp and I love it. The EQ is very flexible, letting you dial in just about any sound you could want. The gain is adjustable too, so you can dial in more of a standard rock sound if you want. Boss pedals are extremely well built, known for lasting typically 10 to 20 years, or even more. And that's with regularly being used all the time.

I also have a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus and I put the pedals right next to each other. I can step on both at the same time and instantly switch from heavy metal distortion to a beautiful clean sound with chorus (a la Metallica), and then back.

"Good Book but I'd recommend it for the guitar beginner +" 2009-11-11

I have several of Troy's books and love them all. I found this book to be a step back for me in knowledge. I knew probably 85% of this material but it did show me a couple cool licks so it's worth keeping. This would be a great first step before moving on to his advanced books. I'd say a late 1st year or more likely a 2nd year guitarist may really benefit from these useful lessons. His books are easy to read and understand since he keeps it simple. Good luck!

"Become a lead guitar player" 2008-02-04
By Miguel (Spain)
Great book to become an intermediate lead guitar player. It starts from the very beginning and covers scales (Minor pentatonic, blues, minor natural and dorian), speed exercises, intermediate techniques (natural harmonics, vibrato bar, tapping), timing up to sixteenth note triplets, basic theory and introduction to improvisation. It has good explanations, 171 exercises and 6 songs with full backing band to solo over that make you enjoy as you learn. Exercises and songs are demonstrated on the included CD.

It uses TAB with standard rhythm notation to make learning easier.

This book will be hard for absolute beginners because, although basic techniques (hammer-on & pull-off, bending, finger vibrato, palm muting, artificial harmonics) are explained clearly, the book includes only a few exercises for every basic technique and focuses on more advanced matters. They'd better start with a basic book as Metal Lead Guitar Primer to learn the basics.

Remember Troy Stetina is acclaimed as one of the best instructors world wide.
