The SM48 unidirectional dynamic microphone is a great performance microphone. It maintains a true cardioid pattern throughout its frequency range, ensuring high gain before feedback and rejection of off-axis sound.

The tailored frequency response is ideal for lead vocals, backup vocals, and spoken word applications. A presence rise brightens mid-range performance, and a low frequency roll off controls proximity effect.

"A study and nice made Mic from a nice seller" 2009-08-28
By R. Le (RI)
Actually I have not got a change to test this mic because my audio interface ( the Presonus FireBox) has not enough gain to boost the signal from this dynamic mic. So I cannot talk much about the recording performance but I would have some comment on the body, design and service.

The mic is very study, nice and pro made (as usual from SHURE). I think it would fit very well for the one need a rug mic like live show...

The seller-Streamline Audio Video ([...]) shipped this very ontime as they promised and they are very mice. As told previously my Firebox cannot work with this mic (because of the preamp on firebox is too low gain) and I need to return this mic to the seller. I callem them and made very nice guy who guided me well how to return it without any claim. NICE.

The bottom line here is this dynamic mic may fit well with the one have a good mic preamp ( more than 60 dvb/pa) other wise you need a condenser mic. NOTE that the Presonus Firebox CANNOT work with this mic without a separately strong mic preamp. So for the ones who plan to buy this mic for home recording with Firebox, please try a different one like AKG Perception 120 Condenser Mic.

 "Outstanding Vocal Mic" 2009-07-20
By Chris (West Hollywood, CA)
The SM48 has got to be the world's most underrated vocal mic. It has a nice presence to it, with a frequency response which is flattering to the human voice. The absence of an output transformer gives it a crispness which is lacking even from the venerable SM58. I've compared dozens and dozens of mics side by side, dynamic and condenser, and for the human voice the SM48 is one of my favorites.

The "LC" in the model number means "less cable", meaning it doesn't come with a cable.

Loved it! I use it everyday. Make sure you go into your recording settings and turn up the mic and down the music. I sing karaoke and found this works the best. Very Clear. I turned off my mic boost too.

"This is a winning classic" 2007-04-29
By Marvin Walther (Tawas City, MI)
Shure has offered this cartridge and stylus combo almost since the inception of stereo records in 1958. The exceptional performance includes, but is not limited to, exceptionally resonant bass and flat highs with no mid-range accent like some other cartridges introduce.

This cartridge and stylus combo manages to reproduce an even-keeled tonality which works over a wide variety of records, even 78 RPM recordings with the original M44-designed diamond stylus inserted (this stylus was last manufactured in the 90's by Shure).

Radio stations used this cartridge where better performance was demanded of the stylus under abusive conditons versus the Stanton which was often found in studios as well during the 60's, 70's and 80's.

I am purchasing a new one, because the original I've had for 25 years is finally falling apart internally (electrical noise, channel imbalances and the stylus will now fall out of the grip). The cartridge and stylus was already used when I acquired it, but I have taken exceptional care of this for all these years. The stylus actually has out-lived the cartridge! Considering the number of years this one has lasted, and the fact that Shure is manufacturing the new ones exactly in the same fashion as the original means this should be the last cartridge I should ever have to buy for the rest of my professional career. The price versus how many years of durability and reliability make this more than exceptional value, it's practically free!

If you're an audiophile, you'll still appreciate the delicacy it can reveal even in the most demanding recordings, even while tracking some of the most harsh perterbations of the groove.

This cartridge's specs usually are always above the book values, always have been, that's Shure's QC. Read the specs, and you'll know that is the MINIMUM performance you can expect out of their product. Anything less than spec gets re-labeled and sold at Radio Shack.

In short, just buy it, it's worthy of any turntable!

 "Good Stylus and Cartridge" 2005-06-07
By bordersj2 (Boston)
If you've been using Stanton 500's or anything similar ($20-$30), you'll think this was perfection. But if you're an audiophile used to Grados, this'll be... well now to be honest it isn't bad but it's far from the ideal sound. I picked this one up because it's got a good sound, good anti-skip, won't burn out my records and while I'm not a fan of abusing my vinyls (scratching, etc.), this one was designed to handle it so you've got that option to if you want. In short, it's not bad at all.

Keep in mind though that this doesn't come with a headshell. Has screws, etc. but no headshell.

"Great choice for connecting a mic to a computer." 2010-04-12
By Beto Glenn
The Shure X2U is rugged, sounds great, and it works EXCELLENT for what it is designed for: connecting a microphone to a computer. It's basically an high-quality external sound card. It's also plug-and-play compatible with Ubuntu (Linux).

If you use a $1000 microphone for studio quality recording, get something with more dynamic range. It's not professional quality, but it's close.

"Just not that good of product for a Professional XLR Microphones" 2009-10-15
By M. Johnson (Milwaukee/Chicago Area)
Like the previous user said try other options. I have the Shure SM58 along with this usb adapter. It's not bad for a first usb adapter made by Shure. However, I do not recommend this product except if you extensively work on your laptop. It's heavy and the four controls can be messed up easily. The X2u has a latch that secures the XLR connection pretty well. On the negative side, I would seriously recommend using duck tape for both the four controls and the base of the X2u. If you don't the Mic Gain control (like the other controls) will be either too high for recording or too low since three of the controls are not secured when one holds this heavy adapter. Tape up the controls when you get the standard settings for good wave file recordings without the hiss.

The base of the X2u seems to loose connection too often with the cable, thus ruining recordings. This adapter sound quality is just not that clear. The Mic Monitor function is excellent feature but if you get this, "use electrical tape or even duck tape" for the background hissing noise and ideal control settings. A XLR cable adapter to a quality external sound device may be your best option for both laptops and desktops.

Shure has been making excellent products for a long time but this product is not what I expected it to be in terms of quality.

"The best mono USB mic adapter" 2009-08-18
By Herr Frog (Washington DC area)
I purchased this specifically to see if I could use this with Dragon Naturally Speaking and hopefully improve my recognition accuracy by some tiny amount. I can't say if it succeeds at that or not; Dragon is one contrary beast of a program. Nonetheless, when I use this for other purposes, such as simple voice recording, I've noticed nothing but clean sound and plenty of gain.

There are a number of presumably comparable devices out there made by the likes of OSP, Marshall, Alesis, Lightsnake, and others. I started by purchasing Marshall's XLR-USB adapter and found it had a really weak signal that usually needed to be normalized at a MUCH higher volume. I sold that at a small loss on eBay so I could try something else and this was it. (To be fair, it appears that Marshall has re-designed their USB adapter and I think the second version may have addressed this concern.)

The reviews I've read on the OSP and Lightsnake adapters seem to indicate they are not really balanced input, and that inside the box the 2nd and 3rd pins (hope I recall that correctly) are soldered together just like in a simple bal-unbalanced adapter. I don't believe that's the case here.

So far I totally disagree with other reviewers here claiming it's noisy. I've observed no noise.

Sturdy, solid construction. Has some heft to it; in fact, a bit heavy for its size. You really don't want to attach it to a mic directly if you intend on holding it very long, especially if you're a young aspiring starlet. :-)

My only minor detractor is I wish the phantom power button were designed so it's difficult to press by accident. This is the single most overlooked design flaw in mic preamps in general. You can press the phantom power button by mistake and according to some authorities, destroy a very expensive mic by accident. I can't afford many quality mics and so this isn't much of a risk for me. :-)

I have tried and presently own a handful of mic preamps and USB adapters, including the ART USB Dual Pre and an Edirol UA-25EX, and have tried a variety of higher-end USB soundcard devices. This compares pretty favorably with any of them, given its simple purpose. I think as far as usb-powered mono xlr-usb adapters go, you're not likely to do much better presently. You can certainly get a cheaper one, but this is clearly built to Shure's solid design standards and will outlast any of them.
