"Fantastic Fender bass reference book" 2010-07-08
By T. Steele
As the "Illustrated History" title suggests, the content is mostly pictorial and light on commentary. Scads of full color glossy photos take you from the earliest P-basses to the Urge bass and beyond. A good portion of the book is devoted to identifying dates of manufacture by head-stocks, logos, bridges, tuning machines, etc. Topped off with a tour of the vintage Fender factory, this book is a must have for any Fender bass aficionado.

One thing I would've liked to see however, is some information on the various Fender bass neck profiles and their respective eras (i.e. U-shape, vintage C, modern C, soft-V).

 "A Good Resource" 2008-02-16
By Celtic Knut (NY)
This is a good resource for Fender bass collectors or those interested in starting a vintage instrument collection. There are plenty of photos and information to help research the date of a Fender bass, or just to look at and wish you had one. It was also interesting to see the ads used throughout the years and the colors/options available.

"The things I never knew!" 2007-03-16
By Mark A. Dawson (Orlando, Florida United States)
What can I say about this book? Frankly, after playing Fender basses exclusively for almost 30 years, I thought that I knew everything about every style of Fender bass ever made. WRONG! This book not only is a great coffee-table "picture book," it also goes into the roots of why and how particular changes and/or upgrades were made over the years.

This was truly a fun and educational eye-opener for me. I just can't put this book away! I say Fender forever!!

 "ALMOST totally comprehensive" 2006-07-22
By James Murphy
This is an excellent book for both collectors and players. Many facets of the Fender Bass are covered along with interesting little trivia items. The pictures are absolutely first class. The book seems to cover all models of the Fender Bass with one glaring omission. NOTHING about the Coronado Bass (Fender's only hollow body bass). HIGHLY recommended!

 "Great book IMHO" 2006-05-01
By Lloyd R. Evans (Atascadero CA)
True, not EVERYTHING is in this book, but close enough. There are other books that cover the "players" of Fender basses, this book doesn't center on that. Lot's of great photos and info.

It IS my Fender Bible.

I'm gonna get a spare!

 "Second Best Book on" 2010-02-06
By Bill Turner (Old Bridge, New Jersey United States)
The ONLY book better than this one, is its companion volume 2 if you can believe that! These are the ONLY books on the Les Paul guitars you'll ever need to buy. Rob Lawrence goes into meticulous research and detail with all the loving care that all the other books lack. ALL of the photos and graphics are absolutely top quality. The problem with ALL the other books, regardless of the authors--is that they just can't get past the 1958-60 sunburst Les Pauls, Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page....so they just blow off every single other LP guitar as hardly worth their "scholarship" and research to do any in depth writing about...resulting in a boring, redundant rehash of each others' books practically down to the SAME photos of the same spandex 'n hair metal artists, and the same catalog page reprints.

This book goes into the historic detail and secrets that are missing from all the others, and is the ultimate 'breath of fresh air' in which EVERY variation of the Les Paul model is treated with highest regard and respect. These guitars go FAR beyond heavy metal and blues...and this is the ONLY book to expound on that, along with volume 2! This is also the best biography on Les himself, as Rob Lawrence writes as his close friend and fellow musician--rather than a mere, superficial "vintage instrument" collector or dealer. These are also the only books to expound on the TONAL QUALITIES of the various Les Paul models....another detail ALL the others completely MISS! The Les Paul guitars have so much more to offer than merely being plugged into a stack of maxed-out Marshall amps....they are the ultimate "guitar audiophile" tool for a LOT of serious music OTHER than hard rock, heavy metal and rock-blues. This book is a MUST for any guitarist, and belongs in EVERY guitar player's collection...right alongside volume 2.

Finally, the long-awaited English edition of this historic Japanese book is here! The Beauty of the 'Burst pays tribute to Gibson's magnificent Sunburst Les Pauls made between 1958 and 1960, the most highly prized solidbody electric guitars ever. The magnitude of their value is directly related to their look (outrageous wood patterns, or "figured" timber), since non-players are paying top dollar for them. The book features lavish full-color photos of these beautiful instruments throughout; the guitars of famous players; a foreword by Ted McCarty; a bio of the author, world renowned collector Yasuhiko Iwanade; and the "Science of the Burst" section with over 30 pages of detailed reference facts on every facet of the guitar, including colors, wood figure, pick-ups, hardware and qualities of "voice." This may be the closest guitarists will ever be able to get to these incredibly collectible beauties! 216 pages, 8-1/2 inch. x 11 inch. Softcover

"The book for Les Paul lovers..." 2009-01-09
By Innocent_Bystander (Southeastern, PA)
I'm not sure there's much else that can be said about this book. It chronicles the Les Paul from roughly '58-'60 and a few others from the era. There's also some great technical info in the back of the book as well. Great pictures and the simple layout works to showcase the guitars.

If you're into guitars, Gibson's or the Les Paul, this is a must have in my opinion.

"What can I say, good book." 2008-05-09
By Gregory J. Hough
I am a guitar player. I wanted to get a Les Paul Historic model. They make them now identical to the originals made in 57-60. I bought the book so I could pick out a guitar as close to an original as I could find. The book gave me the knowledge of what the originals looked like and I picked out a guitar that I wouldn't have picked out unless I had the book to work with.

 "Good book, small flaws" 2008-04-06
By Guitar Mechanic (Covina, CA)
Beauty of the 'Burst is an overall good book. The photography is excellent, the layout is clear and the printing (critical, since color plays an important part in the discussion of these guitars) is really well done.

The book is definitely for aficionados of the sunburst Les Paul only. What you have are several hundred pages dedicated to one model of guitar, all with the same paint job and hardware. Obviously it's a very special guitar, and those people hooked on LP 'bursts will love seeing all the subtleties between instruments.

There are a couple of areas where I feel the book falls slightly short, but they're minor. In the section following the photographs ("Science Of The 'Burst", where they analyze every aspect of the guitar from the finish to the wood) there are some small factual errors such as the thickness of the maple top-plate. Not a huge deal, but in a book that gets into such minutia and makes such a big deal about the smallest of features, I feel they were obligated to get things like this correct. A person using some of these specifications to evaluate an instrument might be thrown off the mark.

The other thing that slightly annoyed me was the hyperbole used to describe every single instrument. One of the features people love about these guitars is the figured maple top. Some are nicer than others (just a fact of production, not to mention that this was a non-priority for Gibson at that time), yet every guitar is given the "this is the most unbelievable example" treatment. The plainest maple top will be gushed over, sighting something like the "wonderful fading of the color" or the "amazingly straight grain-lines that run the length of the top." Hey, it's some faded paint and wood with grain lines! I was waiting for them to rave about "the incredible way Les Paul's have mass, are affected by gravity and take up THREE dimensions (height, width AND depth)."

Nit-picking aside, it's a very well done book which I enjoy looking at. It also is a terrific collectors tool as well as a nice paean to one of the great, iconic instruments of the 20th century. Recommended.

"Can we Hit it and Quit it?" 2007-09-09
By C. Kirkpatrick (TX)
I've always wanted to understand how James Brown got that Funk sound. This book breaks it down for drums, bass, and guitar. It isolates each part so you can focus on finding the groove. The transcriptions are accurate, although some recordings may have variations depending on the player. The book also gives a brief history of the players behind the Godfather of Soul. Bootsy is a monster, and this book has his lines laid out for you. Worth it!

Really a great book. Has a bit of interesting history about James Brown.

Really breaks down the interplay between drums, guitars, and bass on JB's band. Also provides some insight into the different bassists during JB's career. Finally, really provides a good description of the rhythmic interaction between the drummer and bassist.
