The ART DJ Pre II should be in every DJ's gig box!Vinyl records have drawbacks. Bass compensation can be needed during playback. Records produce a certain amount of hiss, and magnetic cartridges produce a weak signal. A separate RIAA preamp is necessary when you are connecting a turntable to a mixer that does not have one built in. The ART DJ Pre II features an RIAA-type phono preamp circuit with full patching facilities for connecting a phono turntable and mixer. The DJ PRE II (formerly named thePhono MicroPRE) acts as an interface between your turntable and your audio recording / playback system. The analog input capacitance can be switched between 100pF and 200pF to optimize your phono cartridge response. A switchable low cut filter removes turntable rumble while leaving the audio pristine. The front gain trim control and signal/clip LED allow you to optimize the preamps gain for a wide range of input sources. The built-in low noise phono preamp circuitry is highly accurate and precisely conforms to the RIAA standard. The line output jacks are low impedance and can be used with any sound card.Housed in an all aluminum black anodized case, the DJ PRE II can be powered by a wide variety of external supplies. If you need to amplify and EQ your vinyl records to interface with your audio workstation, sound card, home stereo system or main monitor system, the DJ PRE II gives you flawless audio reproduction in a rugged and reliable package.ART DJ Pre II FeaturesDual RCA-type inputsDual RCA-type outputsGround terminalPower: 12V DC (Adapter included)ARTcessories Series OverviewCreative audio solutions in cool little boxes.ARTcessoriesare taking the audio world by storm and quickly becoming a popular brand with musicians, DJs and studio engineers everywhere around the World.  "great sounding phono preamp" 2010-04-01
By ronald Jee (aurora, or)
without this preamp, i could barely hear the music from playing a vinyl record thru my pioneer 919AH-k AV receiver, and the sound was weak and flat no matter how high of volume i used. with the DJ Pre II preamp, the record now plays with excellent loudness and hi-fidelity. the adjustable gain knob gives the ability to match the preamp output with the sensitively of the receiver. the instructions with the unit are very minimal. the are two lighted buttons: low cutoff filter, and capacitance adjustment, but there is no directions on how to determine the best setting, and i can't tell the difference whether the buttons are on or off. the unit is attractive and appears well made.

"Decent Pre-amp for the Money" 2010-01-05
By S. taylor (chicago, il United States)
If you're looking for a good phono pre-amp under $100 then this is worth looking at. The sound decent to good (not terrific to incredible) and if you have a lower gain output cartridge (moving coils instead of moving magnets) then there's a good amount of gain to give you more output. Though if you have a moving coil cartridge you're probably not looking at a preamp this cheap. On the downside, there is a power light on the face of the unit that is on as long as the unit is plugged in and it's pretty bright. There's no power switch to turn the unit off, so it's constantly consuming power unless you unplug it. Which I would think would be bad for the longevity of the unit. Also, to make it smaller they've put the DC power converter on the power plug of the unit which means it's got a pretty big wall wart. Overall I feel good about the purchase and I the sound is respectable for the price. I just wish it had a power button and I don't understand the need for a power light if the unit is always on when plugged in.

 "Great Sound, Low Price" 2009-12-04
By Peter Martin (Valparaiso, Indiana)
About a year ago, I got a great deal on a 7 speaker surround sound system that was a vast improvement over my old (as in 20 years old) two-speaker stereo. The only catch was that the system did not come with a phono input and I still have over 100 LPs from the days of my youth. This fall, I decided it was time to start listening to records again, so I started shopping around on-line. I stumbled upon the ART DJ Pre II Phono Preamp and its more sophisticated sibling, the ART V2 USB Phono Plus DJ Preamp. I opted for the lower tech version (without USB, optical, and other output options) because my computer's sound card has RCA inputs and because I primarily just want to listen, not convert my old LPs and because I liked the $44. price tag on the Pre II. It took less than 10 minutes to have it on-line and playing an old favorite. It has a simple interface of an output knob, two in-out buttons for the input limiter and the low-end cut (to reduce rumble) and a VERY bright blue power light. I chose an 1960s release of Debussy favorites that had seen a LOT of play in my childhood on less than audiophile quality turntables. I was impressed at how little noise came through the system and was very pleased with the over-all results. Although I am a musician and love music of all kinds, I need to tell you that my ears often are unoffended by little things that my more discerning friends find fault with. I want to hear the music with as little background noise (hiss, pop, or rumble) as possible and the ART DJ Pre II does that for me. I did not need to the input cap or low cut filters that toggle on an off on the front of the unit, it just sounds great on my system. There are just two things I would like to change about it. I am a very power-conscious person and there is no on/off switch on the unit. Furthermore, it is a DC powered unit with an inverter brick that also stays warm whether the unit is in use or not. Eventually, I will rearrange my power strip for my entire system so that I can kill the power when I am not using it, but it annoys me that the unit can't be a little "greener". and speaking of colors, the ultra-blue LED power light actually hurts my eyes to look at it. I will probably solve this problem with a piece of electrical tape. A quarter the brightness would give me the information that I need: that is whether or mot the unit has power. Still, I am pleased with the unit and give it a qualified thumbs-up.

 "Awesome product" 2009-11-20
By A. for YOU
I purchased this preamp so I could enjoy using my turntable once again. I had recently gotten the turntable out and plugged it up to my wife's stereo, which has no phono inputs. I was disapointed to find that the volume level was virtually nonexistent, so I bought the preamp, actually, as a result of all the positive reviews on Amazon. I finally used it for the first time today, not with the stereo, but in conjunction with a CD burner tht I have. I tried to hook the turntable up to my laptop and use the Audacity software, but I wasn't able to get that to work (I think because I was plugged into the mic jack- my laptop does not have a line in). At any rate, I was able to create a .wav file and it sounded terrible. So, I got out my old Pioneer CDR burner that is a stereo component, and I plugged the turntable to the preamp and right into the Pioneer. I was quickly able to do an input check and monitor the recording level, and within minutes, I was recording my vinyl onto a CDR. I later imported the CDR to my computer using Rhapsody and I have to say, it sounds like I am listening to vinyl right out of my computer. I am very satisfied with the DJ preamp. It is easy to use, and I have had no noise introduced that some others have complained about, so I have not had to use the ground at all. I'm looking forward to plugging this up to my stereo and just listening to all my old albums. You can't beat the price, either. Nice product!

"Works Perfectly and Easy Set Up" 2010-01-25
By G. LeBlanc (Portland, OR)
I purchased and received the ARTcssories USB Phono Plus in the past 2 weeks and used it today. It was easy to set up and I will not go into detail about specs as others have covered it well. I will instead use simple and plain lingo on my experience in using this product.

I unpacked the unit, plugged in my Technics SL-1200M3D RCA plugs and the ground wire (yes, there is a place on this unit for a ground wire) to the back of the unit. I then plugged in an extra set of RCA wires to my mixer so I could hear LP's as I played them. I flicked the switch on the front so I could hear what was playing and then connected the USB plug to a USB port on my desktop. I downloaded Audacity from the internet for the newest version and opened it. This unit is powered by USB which is nice and does also have AC Adapter bundled. My computer recognized the unit and my computer automatically switched my audio to 'USB Audio Codec' and I was set to go.

I put on an album and started to record the song in the middle in order to get sound level correct in the Audacity program. This Phono Plus also has a volume/gain knob so you can adjust volume input to your computer program that you choose to use. I set my input level very low on the Audacity software program so I can use the phono Plus's volume knob. Once I got the volume level I wanted, I erased what was recorded in Audacity and reset the stylus to beginning of track and hit record in Audacity again to record the song. (The Audacity program is one of many that you can use, but since I have Nero for editing my WAV files, I use Audacity only for just going from vinyl to digital. Audacity will also allow you to edit what you recorded).

I exported my newly recorded song to a file on one of my hard drives as a WAV file. I then edit in Nero and cut out the silence and maybe adjust volume levels more. I leave in the abnormalities from my albums like small clicks or pops that happen here and there as my albums are in good condition and I enjoy the natural sound and do not want to edit this out. I then encode the WAV files to MP3-320 and MP3 Pro so I can play them on different portable devices. I save the WAV files too for making cd's.

I am very happy with this unit and works as intended. Hell, I may even take out my 8-track player and record 8-tracks with this thing and record the tapes as they are but have them on cd. This unit will allow you to hook up about anything with RCA plugs. I also have an ION USB turntable that actually works very well, but it feels like a toy compared to my Technics. By the way, this Phono Plus unit does not feel cheap and seems quite solid. It is made with aluminum and rubburized sides, not plastic.

 "Outstanding Quality" 2009-10-15
By Sequestre (Cumming, GA)
I have been looking for something like this for many years. It is the perfect solution for turning all of my vinyl records into WAV files. I've been a Professional Broadcast Engineer for over 30 years and I've seen technology come and go; this one is for both the going out and the coming in. I was unimpressed with all of the USB digital turntables that I checked out; the quality just didn't meet my expectations. I already had a high quality analog turn table and phono cartridge; just needed to find an easy way to convert the analog songs to digital for my PC. Audio input on the sound cards never made me happy with the final result. Well, now I am satisfied to my heart's content. If you are like me and you want to convert all of your old records and import them into your PC media library, then this is the first step. It is very easy to hook up. No extra drivers to worry with in XP or VISTA. The second step is having good recording software. The unit ships with the free open source Audacity and while I'm not that familiar with it, I prefer Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. Great for cleaning up scratchy records. Happy Listening!

 "Works good....For Now....." 2009-08-31
By D. Merrick (Indiana, USA)
I've been using this preamp with XP and Vista for about a year with no problems.

However, windows 7 is another story. The drivers no longer work in Win7. There is no Volume control, even though the Windows Sound panel shows the level meter going up and down, I am unable to get any application to get an input from this unit.

I have left 2 separate inquiries, over the past 2 months, to ART's customer service, via their website (No phone #'s available) and have never received a reply to my queries asking weather the device will ever support Win 7.

So Just a warning, if you are planning on upgrading to Windows 7 This year, don't plan on this unit working with it.
