"Great LDC mic for price" 2010-03-06
By M. Morgan (Olive Branch, MS)
I bought a few LDC lately. The bluebird, the mxl 990, and this one and I must say for vocals this mic is better than the bluebird in my opinion. It has great clarity and it picks up hi's and low's great.... I would recommend to anyone but you must have a good preamp to get the full experience. I don't even use the pads so they probably make even more of a difference. very touchy gain and shockmount is pretty weak but the mic is nice!!!!

"excellent LDC for the price" 2009-07-28
By G. W. Schumacher (New York City)
I have had my Studio Projects B1 for a little over a year now, using it often in my home studio and for location recordings. For the price this is probably one of the best large-diaphragm condenser mics available. I've never heard the kind of low- or mid-range muddiness that seems to plague the comparably-priced MXL or Audio-Technica condensers. The mic sounds clear and accurate through the (excellent) preamps in my Alesis iO|26 firewire interface.

I've been using the B1 primarily for vocals (singing), but it works for a lot of things: acoustic guitar, hand percussion, and as a room/ambiance mic. I've also used it on a guitar amp with satisfying results. To my ears the mids and highs have pretty good clarity and detail without getting harsh; and the pads and high-pass filter switches are handy things, offering more options for getting a better sound at the source rather than trying to "fix" things in the mix with EQ (which is a chore and generally doesn't sound as good).

While there are certainly microphones on the market that have better overall clarity and presence, they tend to cost much, much more than this. One day I'll buy an AKG 414, and I'm sure it'll be worth the $850 or whatever, but the B1 meets my recording needs right now. Therefore I have rated the B1 microphone 5 stars - superb, top-notch, highly recommended.

Five stars notwithstanding, a couple notes for people considering buying this microphone:

- You will need a pop filter if you will be using it for vocals. The B1 ships with a foam windscreen, but it colors the sound and to my ears it's unsatisfactory.

- The included shockmount has some shortcomings. For one, it is difficult to insert and remove the microphone - you have to pry the plastic open with a quarter or a screwdriver, break out the elbow grease, and grunt and cuss at it for a while before it finally works. With all that rough treatment the little bungee things get stretched out, although SP gives you a replacement set. Finally, the hinge is somewhat flimsy and unreliable. It needs to be tightened a bit past the point of sensible tightness, otherwise the whole thing will flop over unexpectedly, and your snazzy B1 microphone might plummet to the floor (this is bad).

- The "leatherish" zippered case is okay (but unpadded) until the zipper breaks catastrophically, which will probably happen sooner rather than later.

"Finally, a condenser I'm thrilled with. And the price was excellent!" 2008-09-22
By D. Fichtner (American in Seoul, SK)
I'm so happy with this mic. After going through two other condensers (an MXL990 and a Shure KSM27) which I got rid of, I'm finally content. The best thing is that the price is outstanding. This mic is priced far lower than what it should be.

The Studio Projects B1 has a wonderfully warm low end to it that still has detail. I have a midrange voice, and it fits me very well. The highs are not so overly "essy", as many other cheaper mics are. They are clear and just right. I barely feel a need to add much for EQ.

My previous experience with an MXL 990 was not a good one. I returned it in a day, due to the muddy lows and weird high end. I also had a Shure KSM27, which is probably better suited for high-pressure sound applications than VO's. I didn't care for its boxy highs sound, and sold that off.

The Studio Projects B1 is just incredible for the price. You can actually hear it if you do a web search on transom dot org mic shootout. It sounds better than mics costing thousands.

Really, an outstanding product. People say the C1 is better, but I just can't imagine myself needing it -- I'm so thrilled with this B1 for VO work.

The only con I'd say is the rather cheap basket holder. It comes with a free windscreen, though, which is a nice touch.

Remember, v2 of his mic has the extra -10 and -20 pad switch, as well as a two low-cut modes at -75, and I believe -150. Both work fairly well.

 "LOVE this product!" 2010-03-01
By L. Gilbert (Saint Joseph, MO, USA)
If you have a keyboard that can hook directly into your PC through MIDI or USB, then this is a must have teaching program. I absolutely love it. I have already gotten through the first 43 lessons and it has helped me a lot so far. I could already read music a little and could tell you where the keys are on the keyboard, so it only helped solidify this for me, but it has helped improve my music reading significantly. I love how it can tell you exactly what you have played wrong when you are hooked up to the PC. It will tell you the percentage of how well you did and whether you played the wrong note or played the note too soon or too late. It has helped me a lot with my timing. I can't wait to go further. It goes through both the beginners and the intermediate lessons, so there is a lot to learn.

 "Perfect Replacement" 2010-01-27
By Russell Blundell (Dallas, TX USA)
I'm the kind of person that gets really uncomfortable learning a new skill from a qualified instructor without having any previous knowledge of said skill. I was really interested in learning the piano so I chose this product. I'm glad to say it is a great tool. Two of my family members who are pretty good on the piano are amazed at the progress I'm making. The software layout is great in giving you the ability to go at your own pace. It always you to continue working on problem areas while skipping those you excel at. The structure of the lessons is great and easy to understand. I recommend this product to anyone interested in learning piano or anyone who is shy about learning as I am.

"Be careful when purchasing the BASICs and METHOD" 2010-01-04
By D. Estrada (Boston, Miami)
Great product (Which I bought directly from Amazon), but...when looking for the Midi USB interface I noticed that Amazon was selling the SAME software but WITH the USB MIDI at $20 less!!! [[ASIN: B002MUALQ4 ]] Turns out that there are Piano and Keyboard METHOD which has 300 lessons and Piano and Keyboard BASICS which only has 50 lessons. Amazon sells the BASICs (50 lessons) software BUT with the MIDI USB interface at $20 less than the Piano and Keyboard METHOD (300 lessons). My point is that Both software programs have the SAME cover so be careful when purchasing!!!

 "Good job" 2009-10-29
By Dale Sanders
I think this is a great product. It walks you through the basics and when you start playing the music has numbers on it that match up to your fingers (1-5) so you can play as you get the hang of reading music. Gradually they remove some of the numbers so your music reading skills improve. The software grades your playing with a percentage score, and gives you details on your errors (if you want them).

Also, it includes short videos of a person playing piano so you can see proper posture and such. Each song comes with (optional) accompaniment, which can make it funner to play (especially with the simple songs).

 "Very well done." 2009-10-26
By Chris
I always wished I hadn't given up on learning piano, so I dusted off my keyboard and got Piano Method. I already know some basic stuff but navigating is very easy, so I got right into the section I needed to be. This product does a great job of building on concepts methodically that make learning easier. If you have a MIDI keyboard be sure and get a USB MIDI cable. When you play any of the songs included, after you are done learning the program shows you on the picture of the keyboard, what mistakes you made. It is very helpful. I am about 1/2 way through the program and am playing some songs. The songs included aren't ok but I am now able to learn some pieces of other songs from a few books of various bands I like. Piano Method teaches you how to read as you are going along, so you can really learn anything you like.

"Works Perfectly and Easy Set Up" 2010-01-25
By G. LeBlanc (Portland, OR)
I purchased and received the ARTcssories USB Phono Plus in the past 2 weeks and used it today. It was easy to set up and I will not go into detail about specs as others have covered it well. I will instead use simple and plain lingo on my experience in using this product.

I unpacked the unit, plugged in my Technics SL-1200M3D RCA plugs and the ground wire (yes, there is a place on this unit for a ground wire) to the back of the unit. I then plugged in an extra set of RCA wires to my mixer so I could hear LP's as I played them. I flicked the switch on the front so I could hear what was playing and then connected the USB plug to a USB port on my desktop. I downloaded Audacity from the internet for the newest version and opened it. This unit is powered by USB which is nice and does also have AC Adapter bundled. My computer recognized the unit and my computer automatically switched my audio to 'USB Audio Codec' and I was set to go.

I put on an album and started to record the song in the middle in order to get sound level correct in the Audacity program. This Phono Plus also has a volume/gain knob so you can adjust volume input to your computer program that you choose to use. I set my input level very low on the Audacity software program so I can use the phono Plus's volume knob. Once I got the volume level I wanted, I erased what was recorded in Audacity and reset the stylus to beginning of track and hit record in Audacity again to record the song. (The Audacity program is one of many that you can use, but since I have Nero for editing my WAV files, I use Audacity only for just going from vinyl to digital. Audacity will also allow you to edit what you recorded).

I exported my newly recorded song to a file on one of my hard drives as a WAV file. I then edit in Nero and cut out the silence and maybe adjust volume levels more. I leave in the abnormalities from my albums like small clicks or pops that happen here and there as my albums are in good condition and I enjoy the natural sound and do not want to edit this out. I then encode the WAV files to MP3-320 and MP3 Pro so I can play them on different portable devices. I save the WAV files too for making cd's.

I am very happy with this unit and works as intended. Hell, I may even take out my 8-track player and record 8-tracks with this thing and record the tapes as they are but have them on cd. This unit will allow you to hook up about anything with RCA plugs. I also have an ION USB turntable that actually works very well, but it feels like a toy compared to my Technics. By the way, this Phono Plus unit does not feel cheap and seems quite solid. It is made with aluminum and rubburized sides, not plastic.

 "Outstanding Quality" 2009-10-15
By Sequestre (Cumming, GA)
I have been looking for something like this for many years. It is the perfect solution for turning all of my vinyl records into WAV files. I've been a Professional Broadcast Engineer for over 30 years and I've seen technology come and go; this one is for both the going out and the coming in. I was unimpressed with all of the USB digital turntables that I checked out; the quality just didn't meet my expectations. I already had a high quality analog turn table and phono cartridge; just needed to find an easy way to convert the analog songs to digital for my PC. Audio input on the sound cards never made me happy with the final result. Well, now I am satisfied to my heart's content. If you are like me and you want to convert all of your old records and import them into your PC media library, then this is the first step. It is very easy to hook up. No extra drivers to worry with in XP or VISTA. The second step is having good recording software. The unit ships with the free open source Audacity and while I'm not that familiar with it, I prefer Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. Great for cleaning up scratchy records. Happy Listening!

 "Works good....For Now....." 2009-08-31
By D. Merrick (Indiana, USA)
I've been using this preamp with XP and Vista for about a year with no problems.

However, windows 7 is another story. The drivers no longer work in Win7. There is no Volume control, even though the Windows Sound panel shows the level meter going up and down, I am unable to get any application to get an input from this unit.

I have left 2 separate inquiries, over the past 2 months, to ART's customer service, via their website (No phone #'s available) and have never received a reply to my queries asking weather the device will ever support Win 7.

So Just a warning, if you are planning on upgrading to Windows 7 This year, don't plan on this unit working with it.

The Danelectro Cool Cat CO-2 overdrive effect pedal adds a healthy dollop of color to your guitar tone with plenty of crunch and bloom. It's very responsive to touch as well as your guitar's volume and tone controls; while it's thicker than the Transparent Overdrive, your guitar's voice still comes through.

The Drive controls set the amount of overdrive from minimum (fully counter-clockwise) to maximum (fully clockwise). Higher settings have higher distortion, volume and low end bloom. The tone control adjusts the tone of the Drive, so you can find your tonal "sweet spot." Turn clockwise for brighter tones and counter clockwise for darker tones. Volume control adjusts the overall volume of the Danelectro Cool Cat pedal, with plenty of range to allow even low drive settings. This guitar pedal has lots of volume, so start with your amp and the volume control turned down. The true bypass footswitch engages and disengages the overdrive pedal.
