In the DR tradition of using old style construction to improve modern performance, Pure Blues? electric guitar strings are designed with pure nickel wrap wire, round wound upon round cores. While this is a slow, expensive method of string making, it does produce a string acclaimed for increased sustain, vintage tone, and great low tones for playing rhythm to lead. The extra step of winding pure nickel around a round core gives the Pure Blues? a punch that players say they are surprised to get in a vintage string. Sounds great on any vintage guitar!!  "To Understand The Blues, You Need To Know The Bluesmen" 2003-01-16
By William E Donoghue (Healdsburg CA USA)
Blues music is a highly-codified deep poetry designed to be sung in front of both blacks and whites but only truly understood by blacks. Ask about Sonny Boy's "Fattenin' Frogs For Snakes" and Southern whites will start talking about frogs and snakes; blacks recognize that this is about working and not getting paid or buying a dress for a woman who goes off with another man. This book is one of a few blues books that lets the blues poets tell their story, much of which is between he lines of their stories and their songs. Read it closely and you will begin to understand what it was to be a black in the Mississippi Delta or Chicago in the 1930s through the 1960s. Then you will find parallels with today's world that will change you forever. Jas Obrecht's book has the wisdom to allow the interviewees the dignity to speak in their own words and dialect with minimal editing. This is a major book on life ... and the blues.

 "Nothing but the blues" 2001-08-10
By Joe Sixpack -- Slipcue.com (...in Middle America)
By "postwar blues", we mean the upbeat, amplified, often aggressive material that many popologists see simply as the roots of rock'n'roll. But for blues fans, the muscular power and driving passion of the bluesmen is enough by itself, and this collection of articles and interviews profiling many of the genre's greatest players, is manna from heaven for the folks who could care less what happened after Elvis shook his little heinie on the Ed Sullivan show. This is a classicist's view of the blues -- standardbearers such as Otis Rush, Muddy Waters and BB King get multiple entries, wild West Coast and Texas bluesmen like T-Bone Walker and Clarence Gatemouth Brown also get their propers, and while the main emphasis is on the dudes who plugged in, acoustic players such as Fred McDowell also get a nod or two. The book draws on a variety of writers, and reflects a variety of interviewing and narrative styles -- most of the material originally appeared in "Guitar Player" magazine, but while some technical points are investigated, the book is an even better source of information about the players themselves -- their personalities, their stories, their world view. A true blues fan should enjoy this book quite a bit!

By Dan Reich (San Rafael, CA)
An outstanding collection of interviews and profiles of some of the most interesting musicians one is likely to come across. The interviewers consistently ask brilliant questions, and get candid and colorful responses. A vivid portrait of the life and times of the modern blues musician, "Rollin' and Tumblin'" tells stories and shares musical insights that give the reader an uncommon peek into what makes the blues such a vibrant and earthy art.

 "Amazing sleeper" 2010-09-08
By Tom Steele
This thing has great tweed amp tone. The pedal and the sound you get from it would be a bargain at three or four times the price. And if you're a DIY stompbox builder, this is a GREAT source of parts. The enclosure and switch alone would cost you more than this pedal if you bought the parts online. I won't be cannibalizing mine, but I may get another to mod.

This isn't a tube screamer and it isn't going to sound like one. That soft-clipping mid boost ain't here. What is here is a very nice top end and a ton of clean headroom. For the price, if you don't like it, give it to some kid. Dig it!

Not the best, not the worst. I do think this is a great value. Lets a novice try an effects pedal without breaking the bank. Can get some smooth overdrive and plenty of crunch. Is a little harsh, not as warm as more expensive models.

"It will replace the distortion of your amp" 2010-07-30
By Tina R. Clark (Fairfax, VA USA)
This was my first guitar overdrive pedal that I have now. So I didn't Know what else you need to do before setting up this thing;it also didn't came with instructions.

Forget about instructions! I just turned up the distortion of my amp a bit, turned up the level and gain knobs up to 10 on the pedal ( I wish they had 11 levels) And I got some sweet overdriven distortion with only a little bit from the amp. It sure does make your guitar mix up blues with hard rock.

you can blame your amp for the most of the disadvantages like over-distortion

(which can only be on purpose by someone). But sometimes the sound has more bass (low equalization) even if you put your treble high up on your guitar, lower the bass on the pedal and the amp. The pedal doesn't work too much on van halen stuff obviously because this is a "BLUES Overdrive" pedal.

this is just good enough for people who are looking for those $200 Double trouble distortion because this is cheaper price below $100.

"Not a lot you can do with this pedal that you can't do with a good amp" 2010-07-09
By Baltis S. Schuller
Don't get me wrong, it does have a tad warmer sound than what you get out of your typical "non tube" amp but the trouble of hooking it up and going through the motions almost isn't worth it. I did say "Almost". It's a good pedal for the price. It does give you a deeper sound and it doesn't sound phoned in like a lot of pedals do at this price. If you don't have a tube amp and you wanna experiment with a slightly warmer sound this pedal is probably a dream come true. For your wallet and you. Depending on what kind of guitar you play on, pickups you have in it and amp you use though, it might not be for you. Then again, it's like 12 bucks for this thing and I don't think any guitarist will lose much sleep over it at night.

It's an average pedal at a steal of a price. We'll put it that way. There are better pedals to be had that will give you this sound and more but you'll be paying 100+ for them and the bells and whistles it has that that one doesn't. Decide what's best for you and jump inn.

"Don't be fooled by the price, this thing is the real deal." 2010-06-25
By Alex Nennig (New London, WI)
True bypass, metal construction, all for $20 bucks?

It must sound like hell if its that cheap, right?

WRONG!

I bought this pedal on a whim, hoping to have a milder overdrive for the surf tones I use with my Danelectro guitar, and I got that and more. The tone on this thing is genuinely impressive, its a very respectable blues overdrive. I like it quite a bit better than the Boss blues pedal. The gain levels actually can result in some pretty crunchy sounds, and the high and low knobs allow for some nice tone shaping options.

It does get a little noisy on the higher settings, but its not terrible that way at all, and again, its TWENTY DOLLARS!!! Best sleeper pedal ever! It sounds great, its built sturdy, bottom line: you won't find a Blues overdrive better than this for $70 at least. A very VERY nice addition to your pedal collection, and one that won't cost much for you to add.

 "Excellent DVD" 2008-05-01
By Tony Mack Houston (Tennessee)
Regardless to what level guitarist you are at this point, you can and will benefit from, and enjoy this DVD. Warren Haynes is not only one of the most talented guitarists to play the blues, he also has an excellent, down to earth personal teaching style that will make this DVD an essential part of your library. You will easily pick up suttle nuances from the DVD that you can apply immediately. Warren's commentary is very helpful, and his insight invaluable. Whether you're interested in picking up some new hot licks or in continuing to fine tune your skills, this DVD is definitely worthwhile. I recommend it highly.

 "Lacking" 2008-04-19
By Virgil H. Huston Jr. (North Augusta, SC)
This is a repackaged on DVD version of what used to be a video tape. This may be an OK learning program for experienced guitarists, but beginners should stay away. There is no written material other than a tab book that doesn't tell you how to read tab. Plus, the text in the tab book is almost unreadable. This DVD may have been marginally useful if the tab booklet was adequate, but it is pretty useless with this poor quality booklet. I gave my DVD away to my brother-in-law who is an accomplished guitarist.

 "Worthwhile DVD" 2008-04-06

"Excellent instruction for electric blues and standard tuning slide guitar" 2008-01-01
By Daniel R. James (Buckeye, AZ USA)
Being an advanced beginner, I would say this has been the best instructional dvd that I have purchased. Warren's style is engaging and easy to follow and he provides a broad range of material that is both below and well above my current skill level. I was particularly interested in his coverage of slide playing which has taken me to the next level. He does a great job of providing instruction on the basics of standard tuning slide playing, while also covering more advanced techniques. The split screen, loop, and slowed at standard pitch features are excellent, however the accompanying booklet is rather small-fwiw. You want this for electric and standard tuning blues, not for more traditional "delta" slide playing.

"The best of the Hot Licks series!" 2008-01-01
By J. Leach (Oklahoma)
I own several of the hot licks DVD's and this one blew me away. It gives you a very broken down lesson on how to approach electric blues and especially how to play standard tuning slide. Haynes goes into great detail on how to play slide, as well as his own techniques on how to mute unwanted notes and how to bring out the best in the notes you do want. The looping options on the DVD are a great tool to help you nail down the licks he provides.

What I found most useful is how he actually plays longer licks here...not the normal 15 second or so lick and thats found on many other guitar instruction DVD's. The playing here is for more advanced players, but that does not mean that even beginners cannot get something out of this. He really gets into the playing and it only helps aspiring guitarists learn some great licks from one of the best players of our time.
