 "What a Surprise!" 2009-01-02
By Peachy (FL United States)
I got this software for my husband along with a new guitar for Christmas. After about 1/2 an hour he had the guitar tuned (using the automatic tuner included in the software)and was playing the begining of a real song. I was very surprised. I had been expecting to hear alot of Mary had a little lamb, but with this program, he was able to rock right out of the box. This is a must for anyone who would like to learn a little recreational guitar playing.

"it is ok but metal method with doug marks is better" 2008-06-15

I would really prefer a lesson were the video plays most of the time. This is mostley reading the screen, which is very small and they are so paraoid that you will copy it that they disable printing, The video really does not help much and i have been through half of the course. I personally would reccomend metal method with doug marks over this.

"Definitely get your $'s worth, but not as good as the Beginner CD-ROM" 2008-02-26
By Gail L. Suer (Muncie, IN USA)
I began with eMedia's beginner CD-ROM and next moved to the Rock Guitar. One of the things I enjoyed most about the former was that it taught lessons with entire songs. However, in Rock Guitar, you only learn bits and pieces of songs--and fewer ones at that. Many are not titled songs, but something like "a Nirvana-like song." So if you loved the amount of music on the beginner CD, you may be a little dissatisfied. Additionally, some chords are taught with different fingering than in the beginner CD.

All in all, I learn very quickly with emedia. I really enjoy playing along to their riffs and pieces of songs. Putting the voice to the songs to play with is probably my favorite feature (don't tell anybody that I sing along while playing in the privacy of my room).

This is certainly a really great step towards learning the basics of rock guitar, but should not be your first eMedia CD-ROM (buy the beginner one first!).

So me getting this was kinda moot, but all in all it's really beneficial if you're just starting out. For anyone who's played more than 2 years even... Don't get this. I give it a 5 star for the beginner, cause this thing is packed with some really beneficial stuff for you all to learn. Everything from chord finder "all the decent sounding ones anyways" and a built in tuner and a good deal of lessons are what you'll find on this disc. You have to have the disc in order to access alot of the video and audio, but it's still alright... All in all I'd endorse it for anyone wanting to learn the guitar. This'll have you playing some pretty good sounding progressions within' hours.

A great place to start playing bass guitar. Easy to follow lesson plans. And a good confidence builder for when the time comes to play with other musicians. I would recommend this to anyone just starting out. But there is no subsitute for a live teacher get one to go along with program. My only dissapointment is at the end it tells you to move on to Bass Method 2 but there is no Bass Method 2 oh well.

 "Great software" 2004-12-24
By Addnos (Orange, CA USA)
I'm in my 40's and was able to pick up my father's 30 year old electric bass and learn how to play very quickly. I've been using the program about 3 months and try to play 1/2 to 1 hour every day. Besides learning the songs included in the program I have been able to play Cream songs Badge and Sunshine of Your Love by teaching myself.

As for the details:

1. There is no problem with XP. I have a desktop and a laptop and both run the program without any problems

2. Tuner works great and is very very helpful

3. The program records your playing whenever you want. It is easy to use

4. When playing songs you can turn off the bass line in the song, leave the bass line in, or just play the bass line without the music

5. Moving between lessons is painless and very easy

I can't say enough about this software. It's great and I am only on lesson 43.

You won't be disappointed with the software. It's a good investment and you will be very happy with the results

 "Good for begininers" 2009-06-09

I think it is great for someone just learning and never touch a guitar before . I have played before and it had been a while so I was looking for something more of a review and to bring myself back up to speed since it has been a while since I had played guitar. I'm always in front of the computer so I figured this would be perfect to do on the computer. I am learning some things from the cd and it has help motivate me to play again and i have been picking up my guitar doing so more often. and the tips given on this cd has also help alot with setting up the sound I'm looking for.as of now I have not finished it yet but I would say yes it is worth the money . but I would also say if you are a pretty good guitar player already well then this isn't for you. Chances are you already know most if not all of what is on this cd . but if you are just starting out or just want to get motivated to play again and need to get back to the basics this may work for you and some of the tips on this cd will be of great help to you too.

By Michael Teter
I am an adult beginner. I can read music, but my primary problem is keeping the proper rhythm. The lessons grade performance and highlight timing errors, and with practice, I can get over 90% on a lesson. They are really helpful, but they do require a MIDI keyboard. All in all I am completely satisfied with the software.

They need to update the software. Old tech, to get full screen you need to mess with desktop settings etc... It's very obvious they have not given this software any serious attention after it was released. That said it does what it's supposed to.

Ignore the single star folks; don't know what they are talking about. It doesn't matter what the songs are when you are learning to play the piano. It's all about practice so YOU THAT YOU CAN GO PLAY WHATEVER YOU WANT. If you can already read music and play the keyboard, buy the intermediate course. It's very well done, but it's all classical music.

For me, I'm self taught and play by ear. I bought this so I can get real feedback while I'm playing. So if playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Row Row Your Boat gets me there I have no problem with it. It still challenges me to read the music and master left, right hand.

"Nothing else comes close for learning new songs" 2010-02-14
By L. Wolfley
This software is almost essential for someone learning to play guitar songs. Practically any song you want to learn can be found on the internet and downloaded into Guitar pro. From that point you can listen to the way the song is played and watch the sheet music cursor follow along with the tabs. You can mark a section of the song with the mouse and just have it play that one section over and over. You can slow down the tempo so that you can practice along with the computer playing at a slower pace. You can have the computer incrementally pick up the tempo with each iteration of the section being played. In music scores that include multiple instruments, you can mask out one or more of the instruments so that you can either hear the one you are practicing with, or so that you can play along with the other instruments and not hear the one you are playing also being played by the computer.

There's a lot more to this software including music composition, but just the above features make this inexpensive software a no-brainer for anyone that wants to learn new guitar songs.

About the only thing it does not do, is show recommended finger placement as the song is being played. That would be a nice feature, but would also require someone that knows to take the time out and mark them.

I stumbled upon this software while perusing the internet for guitar related training sites. One site had on-line tabulatures for quite a few songs that played very similarly to Guitar pro. It even had the options to slow down the tempo and mark sections to be played. The problem was, that site required a monthy subscription to use all of it's features, and of course required a connection to the interent in order to use it. While searching for reviews on that site I found one, where someone had stated something like, "pretty good training site, if there was no such thing as guitar pro". From there I immediately changed my search to guitar pro and found exactly what I was looking for.. and no monthly subscription!!

"For use with classical guitar" 2009-12-16
By Farrell Aultman
This review is written from the prospect of using Guitar Pro for Classical Guitar purposes. I have tried many notation programs for classical guitar. None are perfect. I've concluded that you need a high end music notation program for professional looking scores and another program for doing transcriptions for personal use or sharing.

On the high end, the choices are Finale, Sibelius, or Lilypond. I chose Finale for this purpose. You can do anything with it, but there is a steep price to pay. It is not intuitive at all, and it's expensive. The interface is a cluster of years of buildup. One wouldn't design a user interface like this from scratch. If I didn't already own Finale, I'd might go with Lilypond, or look more carefully into Musecore.

But I decided that I needed a notation program for simple transcriptions. Here are the ones that I tried in increasing order of my preference:

1) TablEdit - seen some decent scores for this one on the web. Deal breaker the UI is confusing. I'd just as well use Finale for everything.

2) Power Tab - interface OK, free, lots of features. Deal breaker most of the focus is on the tab representation, very little on standard notation.

3) Tux Guitar - nice interface, very similar to Guitar Pro, free. Deal breaker can't add fingerings. This program may eventually catch Guitar Pro.

4) Guitar Pro - nice interface, will do just about everything necessary easily. Can display/print standard notation only, tab notation, or both. Output is very good. ASCII import. Drawbacks for standard notation are that fingering are unconventional in location and labeling, bar can only be specified though text input, crescendo specified through volume control which is tied to a track(s).

In the end, the decision was an easy one. It just took a while to download all of the programs and try them out. Hopefully, I just saved you a little time.

"Works good for what I need" 2009-07-24
By S. Lemanski (Connecticut)
I started playing guitar November of 2008. I have never took lessons I use mainly youtube and guitar tabs found online. using the tabs found online was fine for a while, but the only way I could hear the song is on I-tunes and I couldn't slow it down.

This program works great for what I need. I can go to the same site I normaly get tabs and get a .gp5 file and open it in guitar pro. I can then switch between different tracks whether its guitar 1 or 2 or drums. and even turn some of them off. you can slow the tempo down and really get the hang of tough tricky parts rather than listening to a full speed song on I-tunes with all the other stuff mixed in.

However I would like to know why the RSE Real Sound Engine dosent seem to work on my Mac Book Pro.

one other thing, It dosent come with an instruction book so its learn as you go method, (which im doing with the guitar right now, funny how that works out)

other than that, I like the program sofar. Maybe now I can learn a full song instead of just intro's and short riffs.

 "Awsome birthday gift" 2010-02-18
By R. Johnson
I bought this guitar for my sons 21st birthday. He has expressed interrest in learning to play the guitar. I picked this one because it looked nice and it came with the cd to learn from. When he opened it the smile, the gasp, and the word "awsome" come out many times. He was very happy with it. I can't wait to hear him play something.

"Nice well rounded beginner pack" 2009-11-30
By Tom Ericks
I got this beginner guitar pack because it seemed to have everything I needed to start playing. The guitar looks cool and is easy to play. It also has an amp with distortion. It also comes with a CD-ROM that teaches you how to play. It is more of a rock approach to guitar, including songs by Green Day, Nirvana and Black Sabbath. The program starts off teaching different guitar skills and then teaches a song with those skills. Then it will teach a slightly harder guitar skill and another song. It is laid out very logically. I didn't want to spend too much money because I thought guitar might be hard and I might not stick with it. The amp is fine for now but I will probably get a bigger one if I want to play with my friend who plays drums. I need to get a little better first. This is perfect first start though.
