 "EMU 0202 USB 2.0 Audio Interface and Windows7" 2010-03-08
By Big cheese (MN)
I bought a brandnew Laptop (Acer Aspire)and wanted to use this interface for some homerecording. I could not get it to work with Windows 7. There are no drivers available. I finally had to return it. Instead I bought Presonus Audiobox. Drivers are offered on the supprt page Windows 7 64 bit. It works fine. I had no trouble at all!

 "Not worth it." 2010-02-09
By Levi H. Noir (New York City)
I bought this for playback, rather than recording. E-MU (a subsidiary of Creative) hasn't bothered to update the drivers for the 0202 USB in nearly three years. Needless to say, the drivers haven't been updated for Windows 7, and are around 60mb. They take forever to download because the E-MU website crawls. On my laptop (a Sony Vaio), I experienced the DPC latency issue others have described below: no matter how much I twiddled with the configuration, I kept getting pops and crackles. I also had to turn the device on, off, and back on after plugging it in for it to work. Maybe it works wonderfully on Macs and older versions of Windows, but I doubt it. If you're looking for a good USB DAC at this prince range, consider the Nuforce uDAC.

"Less plug and play than it should be." 2010-01-15
By Sir Cornwallis III (Omaha, NE)
This device is great if it is working 100% correctly. Even with the latest driver this thing will switch bit rates, or even block out bitrates. We can unplug it, plug it back in and the driver will only allow it to run at 16bit 44.1khz, you then have to unplug again and replug to get it to accept other bit rate/depth settings. Also, the lack of Linux support really was a killer. Initially we really wanted something to dedicate to an Ubuntu Studio box, but in the end it gets plugged in part time to a Windows 7 machine.

"Does not work on Windows 7" 2010-01-14
By C. Messerschmidt (USA)
Don't bother with this piece of junk if you're using Windows 7. The hardware may be great for playback but, for recording, the crappy drivers keep resetting the sampling rate to 44khz under Windows 7. Emu has not put out any new drivers since early 2008. If you're doing vinyl rips, like I wanted to, you might want to look at the Edirol UA-1EX or the Xitel INport Deluxe instead and save yourself a bunch of money and a big headache.

 "Not what I thought." 2009-06-03
By Seagull Ten (Idaho, USA)
+Works good on guitar with high impedance plug-in.

-Noisy on both mic plug-ins. If I yell into the mic it will spontaneously cut noise out and randomly come back (faintly). Happened with different mics. I can't really troubleshoot if it's noise from the PSU or my USB 2.0 card.

-USB chord was DOA. Had to use a spare. Tested with spares. Some chords created more pops than others but noise was the same for all. Get a high quality chord.

 "Not worth the money" 2010-02-28
By J. Mathew
I purchased the product less than a year ago. It was easy to setup and worked well until... it stopped working. I have no clue what's wrong with it.

I've contacted their support team about a week ago and have not heard back yet.

I would not recommend this product.

"Getting around Creative Professional products" 2009-09-24
By James M. Powers (Kelso, WA USA)
I mainly purchased this to go with my Creative Audigy ZS, that has a broken headphone monitor. The thing about this box is, you can hear all your inputs in real time, with minimum latency, well, a little from the optical. I use the optical out to go from the E-MU to the Creative Audigy, with guitars and mics. It's pretty straightforward, a little overpriced, and the unit will warm up.

"Works as advertised, timely shipping" 2009-07-29
By John Collins
It arrived a week ago.

I ain't no audiophile yet. I just wanted a USB soundcard (with the convenience of jacks on a desktop panel), guitar preamp, and with the option to use a midi connection jacks. I haven't tried out the last feature, but so far everything works well. I already have a USB microphone, so I don't know if I will be using the microphone inputs with phantom power. The drivers loaded without a hitch. It has a solid enough feel and pleasant styling for something that sits on my desktop.

I haven't tried out the accompanying software, it works well with my Voyetra Computer Music software.

"Easy to setup and sound seems to be v.good (5 stars)" 2009-05-23
By Frank (CA, United States)

Preliminary review:

Just installed the drivers. The installer hangs at the very end, being an IT guy I figured that the drivers got installed properly. Rebooted the machine and started playing my wav files. I am using HD595 to judge the quality of the output. I'd recommend this to all who are looking for a low budget box with high quality converters.

The knobs on the box could be better. Wonder why EMU didn't bother to spend extra bit on that and I am sure customers wouldn't have minded paying bit more.

I am yet to do recording. I was in a hurry to write this preliminary review. Will post further updates after using the box for more time.

If the recording quality turns out to be v.good I might bump the rating to 5 stars.

Final review:

Tried recording as well with Shure SM58 mic. Overall performance of the EMU 0404 USB is as follows:

- Recording is crystal clear. Excellent frequency response. Use professional studio headphones to feel the quality. I am currently using Senn. HD595

- No latency could be felt. I guess it's close to zero.

- No issues with drivers. None! I am running this on WinXP. If you're using Vista, don't trust anything. Better switch to Mac OS if you don't have an option to switch back to XP.

- Installation of drivers is a breeze.

- Box seems to be made up of plastic/poly* materials but it's sturdy, not heavy metal though.

- Knobs could be of better quality as mentioned earlier.

- The range offered by the knobs is not great. It's not smooth/wide-range when it comes to setting levels. It's bit more sensitive than one would like. But overall, not an issue for a home/small studio.

- Like input (recording), output (playback) is also crystal clear. Fully supports 32-bit. I really think EMU has used very high quality ADC and DAC chips and very high quality of pre-amp circuitry.

- This product truly deserves 5 stars. In this price range, it's hard to find this kinda box with much quality. Thanks EMU!!

While I edit my review, I am not able to change the number of stars from 4 to 5. Consider my rating for this product as 5 stars!!

"Poor drivers, prone to instablity" 2009-04-07
By Maestro Y
The audio quality, in and out, is fine. Functionally the unit is nice, except the Vista drivers haven't been updated since they were released, and I am seeing DAW crashes at least once an hour with this thing (but not with others).

 "Doesn't send MIDI power!" 2010-03-11
By Rodmusic
This is a nice, simple and compact interface, that works perfectly well for everyday MIDI tasks. It has one drawback that may be a deal-breaker for some users: It does not transmit MIDI Power. (Midi Power is like USB or phantom power, but for MIDI devices). This shortcoming makes this E-MU XMIDI 1x1 useless for devices that run off MIDI power like the MIDI Solutions boxes. And some devices look for that power during a sysex dump even if the device itself runs off external power. I was unable to use this interface to update my TC-Helicon Harmony M's OS or program my MIDI Solutions Router. I switched to my Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI interface, which does provide MIDI power, and I was back in business.

This interface works fine for all other MIDI uses, like recording into a sequencer or triggering sounds on modules. The driver installed on Window XP easily and I was up and running quickly. It's so compact that it takes up almost no space in my laptop case. It's the cheapest one out there and you won't need to spend any extra money on USB and MIDI cables.

Just be aware that if you need MIDI power from your USB-MIDI interface, this one is not for you. I didn't know this until I wasted a great deal of time trying to use it for a firmware update on my TC-Helicon pedal. You might have trouble using this interface with some of your gear and not even realize MIDI power is the issue.

I will keep this since I already have it, it's cheap, and it works fine for most of what I need it for. If you didn't buy this already, spend the extra money for the Yamaha UX16 which does send MIDI power. Then you'll not be frutrated like I was.
