This is a product that I'm sure would be great... if you could get it to work. Steinberg has so many DRM measures put into place, it sure does a great job of making sure nobody who shouldn't be using it is using it. Unfortunately, it pretty much makes it so ... nobody can use it. I bought this recently at a local music store, and after over four hours of trouble shooting, uninstalling and reinstalling, updating drivers, and going through multiple guides and trying to install it on TWO different operating systems / computers, it still did not work fully. There was always some kind of an issue. It's rather unfortunate, and especially frustrating, because from what I can tell it both could and should be an excellent product.



Unless you're ready to risk an ungodly amount of trouble shooting, anger, frustration, and possibly total lack of success in regards to using this product, I would not recommend it. I didn't want to rate it 1 Star just because I've had a miserable experience with it, because I HAVE heard good things about the software that comes with this product, Cubase, and the interface itself. But, as this whole review is to say, it means absolutely nothing when company that has an over the top, paranoid, totalitarian grasp over it's digital rights management and software distribution, making it near impossible for some people who legitimately buy their products to use, I can no where near support or recommend.



Buyer beware.

I haven't worked with it very much. It seems a little noisy. Other reviews I have read mention changing the driver settings. I haven't done any of that. It worked out of the box with very little tweaking. The Cubase 4i is somewhat daunting. There is a lot to it. In all, it seems like a good package for the money.

first, they sent me the Anagram 3, not the 6. Anyhow, check out asio4all for windows asio driver. Not sure it makes a world of diff. No probs with the Yamaha drivers, Windows vista 32bit.



Have static real bad if my laptop is plugged into 110, on battery the system is crystal clear.



Data has some skips during recording. using laptop w/ 5400 rpm sata or usb 7200 drive, both skip.



Decided to go with a Mackie 8 channel (802 VLZ3) mixer and a Tascam dp 004 recorder and bypass the computer/interface all together. The computer interface is too complicated for a two channel mix. Too much to set up and tear down for live performances.



Love the Mackie for a 1000 reasons! It's my favorite piece of equipment. Haven't got the Tascam yet, 1 more week.



Note on the Audiogram: the channel level controls are not full kill. If you have a mic plugged in and turn the level all the way down, you still get signal from the mic in your mix.



The users manual is very good.



The Cubase AI4 is rock solid, extensive activation process, updates are available.





Update on Tascam dp-004 pocket studio with which I was going to replace this yamaha recorder and my laptop, didn't like the Tascam at all, doesn't record directly to WAV (or any other usable) format and converts in real time, a two hour recording takes at least two more hours to convert. Sent it back. Looking at a Zoom H2 for the same price.

INTRODUCTION:



Okay, so it's not perfect. $600+ would probably get you a turntable/recorder that is superior to this, but it won't be 5 times better.



CONS:



To continue in this negative vein before writing about the positive, it would appear that like most inexpensive turntables, the speed/pitch might not be absolutely perfect and there is no way to adjust it. That said, from looking at the timings given on the vinyl I have already recorded, I am guessing my particular unit is spinning LPs at approximately 34rpm, while 7" singles appear to rotating around 46rpm. That might be a big deal for audiofiles, and if so, spend $600+ to get perfection. Otherwise, I doubt anyone would notice such a minor variation. It certainly is a vast improvement over those TEAC or Crosley self-contained CD recorders, where not only is the speed up around 37rpm (for 33.3rpm LPs), but is also close to 50rpm (for 45rpm records). For those units, the pitch can be noticed by anyone and those products should be avoided.



Another quibble is the lack of useful documentation you receive in the box. It is limited to a "Quick Start" manual, which is all of 4 pages. There are no details with regards to how to use this unit... it is mostly trial and error, but user-friendly and intuitive.



PROS:



Now on to the pluses: For the money, you cannot do better. First off, it is a fully-functional turntable. Plug it into your stereo system's amplifier and off it goes. You now have a new stereo component! Please note, this unit already has a built-in pre-amp, so you cannot plug it into the jacks for "phono" as the double pre-amp scenario will cause distortion. That said, any other auxillary jacks will do, and for those amplifiers without phono jacks, this is actually a plus.



Recording to the SD or thumb-drive jacks is oh so very easy. Push record, which automatically puts the recorder in record and pause mode. Start spinning the vinyl and push play and the recording process begins. There is also a button to create new tracks as you are going along (as well as the pause and stop buttons). It is very easy.



The ION's tone arm is obviously inexpensive, but again, it works well enough... especially for a unit in this price range. It has a nice velvety lever to lower and raise the stylus too. Speeds provided are 33.3rpm and 45rpm. 78rpm and 16rpm would have been nice too, but especially in the case of the former, a different 78rpm-specific stylus would be required, which would have increased the very inexpensive price for this product. Please note, those self-contained TEAC or Crosley CD-burning products will quite literally destroy your records with repeated plays as their tone-arms are waaay too heavy. Surface noise becomes prevelant after only a couple plays. In fact, do not even consider those as an alternative to the ION model.



In general, the bass response is good enough and there is no need to equalize the results once in the computer (or anywhere else for that matter). The TEAC and Crosley recorders (other units I have owned), have wretched bass response, requiring considerable equalization to compensate.



This ION unit also comes with a dust cover, which is a nice touch.



THUMB-DRIVE USE:



I first tried this unit with a 4MB thumb-drive, but found it could only record about 40 minutes of music onto that. Therefore, I recommend an 8MB drive to ensure you can record both sides of an entire long-playing record at a time. Or, if you want to record even more, try a 16MB drive (which is what I ended up getting for it). After recording, take the thumb-drive to your computer and download the newly created MP3s onto whatever CD burning program you may have (or for whatever other purpose you have in mind). This unit is also supposed to work with other various devices; however, I have not tried these yet, and therefore, cannot comment. I would assume however, the end result would be as successful.



SUMMARY:



Technically, this is a 4-star unit, for all of the negative reasons given above. I gave it 5-stars however due to how well it works and how good the sound is for the price. If you want a decent and servicable turntable/recorder for around $100, there is nothing better on the market. However, if you are an audiophile and can afford it, you may want to look into models that cost 5+ times as much.



In any event, I highly recommend this model to most people who want to add a decent turntable to their stereo system, while at the same time, to have the ability to archive their record collections, and at a good price.

This unit is truly amazing. I have about 300-400LPs from the 60's and 70's I kept all these year. I even have all the 45s I ever bought as a teen. I can't wait to get that music on my iPODs and MP3 players. The unit records directly to any USB drive or SD Card. Converts to MP3 192kbs/44khz. The quality of the MP3s is excellent. No computer needed. I like that idea. This unit sits in the back of my home office on a table so when I have a free hour, I'll do a LP. All you need to do is retitle the music file/track to the song's name. Then I use Roxio Creator to search and place all the Music ID tags. Then I import to my iTunes or MP3 Player. The recorded MP3 are recognized by Ford's Sync software in my Mercury Milan Hybrid...so I just record to a USB drive (small jump or 320G external HD) and can play all the music in my car. The Sync can search idex all the songs, albums, artist just like iTunes does. No need for a iPod in the car.

Also, the in-line input is a major postive. I've converted several tapes and audiobooks on tape to MP3. Saves buying the audiobooks again.

Well worth the price. I just need time to convert all my LPs. I figure it's a one year project. A LP at a time.

 "High-pitched hiss through USB" 2010-10-05

I bought this on a recommendation from a friend. First I noticed over at his house a high pitched hiss when we were playing around with his setup. I thought at the time maybe this was something in his computer somewhere.



Then I got mine, and lo and behold, the same problem! This hiss only occurs through the USB interface. When I ran it through an M-Audio Mobile Pre USB, no hiss. I Googled this and there are numerous reports of people having this problem. This is not an isolated incident. I don't do many Amazon reviews. I only take the time to do this one to say "buyer beware."



So if you are looking to use the USB interface, consider another product, because you are just going to have to sink another $30-$100 on an audio interface to connect to your PC. If you don't need USB, this seems like a perfectly fine mixer. It just annoys me to buy a something only to find that one of its main features is completely broken.

I have had this recorder for about a year now, it's really great. I enjoyed recording my band, and all of my friends bands. It can connect to a bunch of different programs. I have used Adobe Audition with this, but I love using Logic on the mac with this recorder. Anyway, it's really smooth, it does a fine job recording any vocal, drum, amp, or what have you with the right mics. 5 stars

It seems to work ok unless you need to put the sound through the USB. Once you do so, there's a high pitched noise and hiss that will come through on recordings. I Googled this issue, and it seems to be a common problem, especially on desktop computers. Laptops seem to have better luck. Apparently, there is a grounding issue with the USB. Aside from the high pitched noise and hiss, I couldn't get my bass to sound decent through the mixer. It sounded great on the headphones on the mixer but sounded awful after going through USB despite trying a myriad of settings. I am currently trying to return this.

We have been using one of these mixers for more than 18 months now with no problems - it is a great starter mixer at a great price. It is the mixer recommended by the authors of the Podcast Solutions book - one of the first books on podcasting.



You should keep in mind the limitations though - while you can have a number of inputs, the USB connection is going to mix everything down into a single track when it outputs. This means that you can't do post production editing on individual tracks. If you want to do this, you should look at the firewire version of this mixer.



Otherwise, it is a great starter box and has been very reliable. Highly recommended.
