 "for the Bedroom DJ" 2009-11-13
By Alex (Chicago, IL)
Another late review from me......

I bought this product to use at clubs that had their own equipment since I could plug this basic mixer into theirs and allowed my to use my laptop's music and video library. I would also use it in small bars with my 10in powered speakers. I almost immediately upgraded to the hercules RMX and now the Steel as they were more professional and less of a toy. My intentions were to move from using cd's and LP's to digital files and integrate it with my analog gear. You could use this mixer strickly as a sound card but you will have to buy and noise filter(about $20-$25) to reduce ground noice generated. You can get them at best buy or radio shack, even here. If you are just starting out as a Digital DJ, its a good a idea to carry one with you regardless whether you buy this product. Now I don't need a noise filter since the Hercules RMX or even the new Hercules Deejay trim sound card don't generate this noise. Hercules(guillemot) a great company making great products for DJ's at a price you can afford. My advice, buy this product with the intention for the home or to practice your skills. Otherwise upgrade to their more professional products. Don't get me wrong, I have friends in small cities that use this to plug into the club gear, but no one will take you seriously with it. Have fun and none the less, a great starter mixer/sound card.

"This is a childrens toy, not a DJ mixer" 2009-04-07
By Michael Mrowca (Orange, CA)
I purchased a Hercules MK2 DJ Console from guitar center and almost immediately regretted my decision once it arrived in the mail.

The console comes with Virtual DJ 3 Console Edition and is a very bare bones software with very few loop options and even fewer effects. The only usable effect it comes with is beat-repeat which quickly becomes annoying if used more than twice.

The included manual is almost completely worthless. The PDF files that come with the software are equally vague. You basically have to teach yourself how to use it.

The "turntable" platters are worthless. If you so much as brush against it, they will affect the song. However, if you try to use it to set an exact cue point, they are very unresponsive. The beat matching works well on songs at similar BPMs but are not entirely accurate when there is more than maybe 10 BPM difference. The next song will play at the same BPM of the song currently playing, which means it will either drastically slow down or speed up in order to match it. Granted an experienced DJ would be able to adjust for such a difference, but a novice would likely train wreck the mix in such a situation. Using the knobs and pitch bend buttons to manually adjust the beats together is painstaking and inaccurate.

The software makes things too easy by showing a graphical representation of when the beats hit and what BPM the songs are playing at. There is no skill needed to seamlessly blend 2 similar songs together which makes it perfect for somebody to fool around with at a party. The 3 EQ knobs work effectively and you can blend into your next song blind-folded. You can also easily use the EQ to mix two songs of similar tempo together. The included MP3's can be played into each other without effort. You can interchange lows, mids and highs of any two songs and sound like Armin Van Burren. It is perfect to create a false sense of talent in the world of DJing.

Most of my time spent using this piece of gear was attempting to use the pitch bend and knob to beat match songs together by ear without looking at the display. It was not completely useless in this regard but it didn't have the realistic feel I was hoping for. It was more of a guess and check endeavor. In defense of the console, neither my monitors or headphones are very high quality which made it difficult to make out the variation of beats. However, you could tell when you got it right, which is essential to training yourself to beat match without the aid of a computer.

The Hercules Mk2 and VDJ3 tries to do everything for you and takes all the skill and beat matching out of being a DJ. If you just want to blend background music together without anyone noticing and impress drunk college co-eds with your "skills", it is a great little toy. However, you are looking to create your own style and sound, there are far better (and likely more expensive) options out there. I plan to immediately sell this toy on ebay.

 "I'm in the mix!" 2008-12-30
By S. Ruiz (Dallas)
First of all, I chose this cause the rmx was out of my price range. This is a solid machine that does exactly what I want it to do. I was familiar with Virtual DJ so right out of the box I was mixing. Great for beginners and hobbyist. (sp?) The buttons are a little stiff (pause) but I'm getting use to it. It is hard to scratch with but if you learn the machine and software, you can pull of some tight scratches. (looping + crossfader) To get your money's worth from this console, definetly get the full version of Virtual DJ.

"Great for starting up, easy to use, I was mixing in no time!" 2008-12-25
By Uncle J
Being an amateur and not wanting to shell out $800+ for a mixer, sound card, and software that would be too much, I decided to get this "toy" that has everything out-of-the-box, works great, and it's less than most MIDI controllers out there (don't pay more than $250)

Pros:

-It's compact, fits everywhere, comes with a carring strap and protecting shell, I stick it in my back pack along with my laptop and I'm a dj anywhere my backpack goes.

-Quick set up, installed software and I was up and running in less than 10 minutes.

-Easy to use, comes with VDJ that is simple enough, it also works with TRAKTOR 3, although you have to buy that on your own, which I opted to upgrade to. Still VDJ does the job just fine, no need to buy stuff you don't need.

-Pretty durable, I've taken it many places, it has a plastic/metal casing that is stronger that it looks.

Cons:

-Small unit, not a lot of space for more knobs. I wish it had more controls, since it is a basic set up, it's great for starting out, but once you get deep into mixing and adding effects, loops, etc, you will want exclusive knobs for each function. It can still do effects and everything, but you have to learn the combination of button and knobs to make sure it does it right. It can get complicated when doing this in the middle of your mix.

All in all it is a great unit, it has a ton of options for input/output, you can use it as a mixer, or just a sound card, you can do an elaborate setup with your CD players/Ipod/vinyl pluged into it and still mix that with your laptop's MP3s, no other mixer in this price range has this many setup options. Well worth it's price.

 "Excellent stand" 2010-03-20
By J. Rodney
I have an electric guitar set up with a guitar synthesizer. It has an interface unit with large - and somewhat delicate - 13 pin cable plus connecting 1/4 inch cable on the bottom of the body, so it doesn't sit properly on a typical stand. This stand hangs the guitar perfectly from the headstock and instantly adjusts to any height, so the interface & cables are completely free & clear. Lightweight, sturdy and incredibly easy to set up and use. Hands down the best guitar stand for my purposes.

 "Happy customer" 2010-01-30
By Irene Jorgensen (Fortuna, CA)
Very convenient stand. Holds my acoustic guitar securely and is so simple you can just lift it off and place it back easily. I am very careful with my equipment so I can't say how it would perform under rough circumstances. If one of the little retractable arms broke off I don't know what it would require to fix it.

"Great stand, particularly if you have small children!" 2010-01-06
By Mark Surfas (Laguna Beach, CA)
I use this stand for both a Stratocaster Electric and a nice acoustic. The stand telescopes as needed to fit each guitar and so far is quite sturdy. I like this stand because my 3 year old and my 6 year old will both walk up and strum the guitar when I'm not looking. :) This guitar will not come off the stand when the guitar is pulled or jerked on. Perfect if small beings will be accosting your expensive equipment!

 "Great stand!" 2009-12-14
By Kevin Ansberry (Dublin, CA United States)
Stable, sturdy stand that provides peace-of-mind support for all my guitars. Practically impossible to tip and can be adjusted to fit all sizes of both acoustics and electrics. After I showed folks my new Hercules stand, the music leader ordered a bunch more of these fine stands to use at our church. Highly recommended!

"Great stand that can be moved easily." 2008-03-28
By S. Looney (San Francisco, CA USA)
Other stands will hold guitars too, but the gripping action on this stand is nice if you ever want to move the guitar and stand without risking the guitar falling out. It's nice to be able to grab the stand and guitar with one hand without fear of the guitar falling out when you need to vacuum under it or if you are moving things around on stage.

Rugged construction and versatile shape should work with any guitar. The guitar leans against the padded fore-legs. No need for a cradle which often flips wrong-way-around on other stands.

 "Midi player/mixer" 2009-11-13
By Alex (Chicago, IL)
I love my Hercules RMX, but as my shows are getting bigger I'm starting to produce some of my music and using more effects so I switched to the Steel. I love this mixer as I can program up to 12 effects and works great as a video mixer without paying the $6 grand for the pioneer. If I get that big, maybe I will cough up the money for the pioneer, for now this is under $250 and works great. I may one day get an effects controller to plug into my denon, for now this is the best of both worlds.

 "nice and portable" 2010-04-20
By Tom Annandale
I work as a DJ and this thing is great for the smaller, non-club gigs. Integrates great with a Mac, using Virtual DJ, which comes with it. Mixing is pretty easy, but to me, not as easy as turntables. Could be my age though. :) I like that it gives me access to a huge library of songs, without having to bring in crates of records. If this is important to you, this is a good console to get. Like I said, perfect for the smaller, non-club gigs, where you might need to pull any number of songs.

I think this would be good from everybody from the beginner to the pro making a living from mobile gigs. Solid construction that will last you a long time. Easy to figure out and enough bells and whistles to get the job done.

 "A Technical and Beginner's Review" 2010-04-16
By C. Merryman (Beverly Hills, CA)
I have decided to write two different reviews for this product. One of them will be for the beginner, and the other will be for the advanced user of products such as these.

Beginner's Review:

The Hercules RMX the best entry to mid-level midi controller on the market for those looking to get into the world of mixing. While pricier than other controllers, the RMX has the most and best amount of software options to choose from. The Hercules may be somewhat difficult for beginners to set-up right out of the box, but once you do, playing is a breeze. The RMX comes with Virtual DJ software specifically mapped for the product, so you automatically can start to enjoy mixing your music library. Not only that, you are also given a carry-on bag, and lengthy instruction manual on the basics of scratching and mixing. You'll be on your way to hosting parties in no time.

Tech Review:

The Hercules RMX is a multi-faceted midi controller used to control software dj programs such as Virtual DJ, Traktor, or for use in live mixes like Ableton live. It comes with a metal casing, and is a dedicated soundcard, having four input / output plugs. The RMX doesn't come with any type of additional connectors besides the usb cable, so you will have to provide your own stereo jacks.

The controller can be set up for any type of gig. You can run your vinyl turntables or CD players through it, and have multiple outputs, so you can mix at a venue while broadcasting live on radio or internet stream. The buttons can be configured to have little to no lag between interfaces, and the jog wheels can be used to do various DJ scratching. Do NOT expect to scratch like a pro on the jog wheels, they are no substitute for actual vinyl.

The most important thing about the RMX are the drivers, and thankfully Hercules has updated them for windows 7 and Mac compatibility. Many midi controllers on the market selling still are only Vista capable, so be wary of other products like this. They also have a huge support forum, and an excellent customer service record. Expect that if you're having problems, you can google the issue and find the answer.

The RMX comes with Virtual DJ Basic. The software is subpar, and you're probably better off using programs like Traktor or Abelton, which give you more freedom with effects and midi mapping. Those products cost money, so expect to shell out another 400 dollars for a good version of the software.

 "Good stuff!!" 2009-12-10
By F. Botelho
I lost cd with drivers and the virtual dj before installing it. Called the technical assistance, great guys offered to send me by mail if I provided a picture of the equipment plus a proof of purchase. Unnecessary because I easily downloaded on their site the drivers and also the .tsi for traktor. In a couple of minutes it was working perfectly with the traktor, extremely low latency, and what seemed to be a task to accomplish was just a plug-and-play. Midi mapping also doesn't seem to be hard at all. Hope this beauty is stable and lasts long. Ah, it is small (~ the width of a macbook 13"), just a bit heavy, buttons are hard plastic - could be a bit softer but they are still good, and you just won't believe how all this machine can be fed just by an usb cable.

It's so far a very very good product, of course it could be better but you can't expect a Xone4d for this price. What seems to be a competitor of this console is the Vestax VCI-300, can be better and come with serato instead of vdj but it costs more than twice the price.
