 "Good idea, poor execution" 2010-08-23
By Charles P (Chicago, IL)
This product was a good idea, but the execution of its construction is poor. It is responsive, does what it says, works relatively well as a controller. Problem one was the power, I actually had to send it back to alesis because there was a problem with the jack on the unit. Not a big deal. But the pads, while responsive, are a pain to adjust. The two bottom right pads on mine trigger at the same time (when you hit one, the other triggers too), and I've spent more time trying to adjust this (following the directions) than actually playing the darn thing. Even when I got it, I spent hours adjusting the other pads so they didn't trigger all at once, but those last two I can't fix. I can't even trigger them separately in order to adjust them! After having this for about two years with light use (and, to reiterate, more time adjusting it than actually playing it), I've basically given up on those two pads ever working right.

"Good product for the price." 2007-07-09
By Alexander G. Chamandy (US)
You get more than you pay for with this Alesis ControlPad. It's an excellent addition to an electronic studio or a drum set. The rubber drum pads are velocity sensitive and offer a realistic bounce. It can be used with software over USB (such as BFD lite, which is included) or it can be used with a hardware device that accepts MIDI input.

I've been very impressed so far!

"Good for beginners and practical" 2009-01-18
By David in the suburbs (LA suburb, CA)
As noted in a previous review, this product is GREAT for that.

The layout of the drum pads is great, the fact that you have 8 pads and 2 pedals is great unlike more intermediate products such as from Alesis and Roland which have 8 pads 4x2 pads. The songs you can play along with is just ok, there's something like 10 songs for each genre of music, rock pop ballads jazz latin, etc. Only 5 or so appealed to me. There are songs and current ones too you can download from yamaha but they seem pretty pricey. what's not as great is the percussion sound from the pedal. If the bass drum and built in songs were just 50% better it'd be much more practical. for an adult I mean.

The 8 pads and layout is good for practicing (as opposed to buying separate drum pads from a music store which a drum suggested). The space saving is I guess good also though I hate to admit it and plus that the unit is tilted down towards you, i.e. it's about a inch or 2 higher in the back so it's angled towards you and more natural. The Alesis percussion pad or similar units are flat.

 "Excellent product" 2009-01-17
By BillyDKid (GA USA)
After getting completely frustrated with the quality of cheaper electronic drums sold off the shelf at most department/toy stores I looked into a higher quality kit for my 8 yr old daughter.

This is a great set. Many different realistic drum sounds/kits, velocity sensitive pads, pedals, and more features for us to discover and grow into. Check out some videos on youtube to see how amazing the sound and responsiveness is. My daughter loves it! I also considered a real drum set at this price range, but they take up too much room and don't compare to the number of drums/sounds on this machine. I recommend getting a snare stand to hold it. That's our next purchase.

Don't waste your money on the cheap stuff. Nothing else compares to this set at this price range.

"Perfect Mini Drum Kit solution" 2008-08-27
By BLEEKER (NYC)
First off this is NOT a replacement for a real drumkit. It's more of a portable mini kit to take around with you where you want. Much like a guitarist's mini backpack guitar. The built in speakers do the job but if you want better sound, plug in to an external audio source. IT has 50 preset drum kits and 100 play along songs in a range of styles which can be fun to practice to. The kit samples are decent. And there is a nice mix of styles to choose. The pads look sturdy, not sure how they'll hold up over time but we'll see.

The sensitivity can be adjusted to 3 levels 0-1-2. Frankly I didnt notice a whole lot of difference between mode 0 and mode 1 but mode 2 I did notice a slightly more responsive hit when I tapped the pads. If purchasing this i'd consider getting soft tip lightweight sticks or maybe rigging a pair with foam on the tips to preserve the pads and prevent banging up the unit.

The layout of the kit is much better then the dd-55. When playing it I tilt it slightly clockwise so the right bottom end points in between my legs, feels very natural. The pedals provided are not the best but you can upgrade to better full size electronic pedals if you like. But for the purpose I use it for, the provided pedals are just fine. There is a hand percussion mode which when activated brings up the bongo and conga kit. You can then play with your hands which is a nice add on feature.

Im giving it a 4. If it had better sounding speakers and better pedals id give it a five. If you're just starting out i'd recommend getting a full size acoustic or electric kit. But if you know how to play and want a compact light weight mini kit to tote around to friends houses, this is the perfect solution.
