INTRODUCTION:



Okay, so it's not perfect. $600+ would probably get you a turntable/recorder that is superior to this, but it won't be 5 times better.



CONS:



To continue in this negative vein before writing about the positive, it would appear that like most inexpensive turntables, the speed/pitch might not be absolutely perfect and there is no way to adjust it. That said, from looking at the timings given on the vinyl I have already recorded, I am guessing my particular unit is spinning LPs at approximately 34rpm, while 7" singles appear to rotating around 46rpm. That might be a big deal for audiofiles, and if so, spend $600+ to get perfection. Otherwise, I doubt anyone would notice such a minor variation. It certainly is a vast improvement over those TEAC or Crosley self-contained CD recorders, where not only is the speed up around 37rpm (for 33.3rpm LPs), but is also close to 50rpm (for 45rpm records). For those units, the pitch can be noticed by anyone and those products should be avoided.



Another quibble is the lack of useful documentation you receive in the box. It is limited to a "Quick Start" manual, which is all of 4 pages. There are no details with regards to how to use this unit... it is mostly trial and error, but user-friendly and intuitive.



PROS:



Now on to the pluses: For the money, you cannot do better. First off, it is a fully-functional turntable. Plug it into your stereo system's amplifier and off it goes. You now have a new stereo component! Please note, this unit already has a built-in pre-amp, so you cannot plug it into the jacks for "phono" as the double pre-amp scenario will cause distortion. That said, any other auxillary jacks will do, and for those amplifiers without phono jacks, this is actually a plus.



Recording to the SD or thumb-drive jacks is oh so very easy. Push record, which automatically puts the recorder in record and pause mode. Start spinning the vinyl and push play and the recording process begins. There is also a button to create new tracks as you are going along (as well as the pause and stop buttons). It is very easy.



The ION's tone arm is obviously inexpensive, but again, it works well enough... especially for a unit in this price range. It has a nice velvety lever to lower and raise the stylus too. Speeds provided are 33.3rpm and 45rpm. 78rpm and 16rpm would have been nice too, but especially in the case of the former, a different 78rpm-specific stylus would be required, which would have increased the very inexpensive price for this product. Please note, those self-contained TEAC or Crosley CD-burning products will quite literally destroy your records with repeated plays as their tone-arms are waaay too heavy. Surface noise becomes prevelant after only a couple plays. In fact, do not even consider those as an alternative to the ION model.



In general, the bass response is good enough and there is no need to equalize the results once in the computer (or anywhere else for that matter). The TEAC and Crosley recorders (other units I have owned), have wretched bass response, requiring considerable equalization to compensate.



This ION unit also comes with a dust cover, which is a nice touch.



THUMB-DRIVE USE:



I first tried this unit with a 4MB thumb-drive, but found it could only record about 40 minutes of music onto that. Therefore, I recommend an 8MB drive to ensure you can record both sides of an entire long-playing record at a time. Or, if you want to record even more, try a 16MB drive (which is what I ended up getting for it). After recording, take the thumb-drive to your computer and download the newly created MP3s onto whatever CD burning program you may have (or for whatever other purpose you have in mind). This unit is also supposed to work with other various devices; however, I have not tried these yet, and therefore, cannot comment. I would assume however, the end result would be as successful.



SUMMARY:



Technically, this is a 4-star unit, for all of the negative reasons given above. I gave it 5-stars however due to how well it works and how good the sound is for the price. If you want a decent and servicable turntable/recorder for around $100, there is nothing better on the market. However, if you are an audiophile and can afford it, you may want to look into models that cost 5+ times as much.



In any event, I highly recommend this model to most people who want to add a decent turntable to their stereo system, while at the same time, to have the ability to archive their record collections, and at a good price.

This unit is truly amazing. I have about 300-400LPs from the 60's and 70's I kept all these year. I even have all the 45s I ever bought as a teen. I can't wait to get that music on my iPODs and MP3 players. The unit records directly to any USB drive or SD Card. Converts to MP3 192kbs/44khz. The quality of the MP3s is excellent. No computer needed. I like that idea. This unit sits in the back of my home office on a table so when I have a free hour, I'll do a LP. All you need to do is retitle the music file/track to the song's name. Then I use Roxio Creator to search and place all the Music ID tags. Then I import to my iTunes or MP3 Player. The recorded MP3 are recognized by Ford's Sync software in my Mercury Milan Hybrid...so I just record to a USB drive (small jump or 320G external HD) and can play all the music in my car. The Sync can search idex all the songs, albums, artist just like iTunes does. No need for a iPod in the car.

Also, the in-line input is a major postive. I've converted several tapes and audiobooks on tape to MP3. Saves buying the audiobooks again.

Well worth the price. I just need time to convert all my LPs. I figure it's a one year project. A LP at a time.

I've always wanted to get into DJing. I even went as far as to purchase a beginners DJ system a year ago with two turn tables, mixer, the works but never got around to learning how to use it. Lets face it, learning to mix and flip records is no walk in the park. It's an art form that requires all the space and time that most art forms demand if you want to produce quality work. Then I heard that one could also learn to mix via the computer. So I went online and found some products from very creditable companies, ranging in price from as little as $100 and as high as $2000. Then I saw this little device and decided to give it a test spin. It was cheap, didn't look too complex and a few reviews said that it was a good start-up piece. All I have to say is wow! I downloaded the software and was mixing my favorite tunes in 10 minutes. I kid you not! I haven't even gotten around to using the mixing device yet ... The software alone has been awesome. I don't know a lot about DJ tools and all the ends and outs that come with that trade but I will say this: For the money, this is an easy and fun product. I'm a beginner at mixing and I'm enjoying myself. Did and 80 minute mix for my girlfriend and she was like: Nice! Whenever I decide to pull out my more expensive turn tables and mixer I'm sure I'll know a lot more about the art of mixing because of the MixMeister Express.

I bought these as a Christmas gift for my brother, who's in his 40s. He's been a wannabe drummer for a while and has had a few acoustic drums sets, at least one of very high quality--but he's never had an electronic drum set. (He's jammed with bands, but not played professionally.) He had to sell his last and best drum set and hasn't had a set for a long time. Plus he lives in an apartment. So I saw these at Target for $200 and decided to take a chance, thinking I could always return them if they sucked or were broken.



Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see him during Christmas and wasn't able to give him the set until 1 week ago, long after I'd lost the receipt, so I was really worried that he wouldn't like them.



Well, I got a call today, after he'd been playing them "hard" for a week and he raved about them. Things he mentioned:



- 100 sounds (each of which is tunable, which I didn't see mentioned in the specs, but was hoping for).

- He says he really beats the s**t out of his drums and he's really impressed that the set so far has no dings, and neither do the sticks or rims of the drums. This, he thinks, is because there is a tube of air around the edges that prevents them from getting damaged.

- Came with headphones (though I'm not sure of the quality). He said I could have mine back. :)

- Came with drum sticks (as mentioned, no dents so far)

- He likes the way the module lights up, so it can help you learn how to play

- Likes that you can remove the drum part from the songs that come with it, so you can "be" the drummer

- Likes that you can plug in an MP3 player

- Likes that you can record your own playing. It sounded like you could only lay down one track at a time, but he's not that familiar with sequencers so I'm not sure if that's correct or not.

- Said when he got it out of the box he thought the stand would be flimsy, but he's very impressed with it because it's held up really well.

- He said the pedals were made in a sturdy way too with some kind of special bushing or something.



Basically, he said it was the best gift he ever got ("the best gift a man could give another man" were his exact words), so all I can say is that if you're on the fence, get the thing! I should get one for myself.



Oh, I just remembered one more thing he said. He said, "If I'd known electronic drums were this good, I would have bought a set a long time ago."



Update 5/15/2010 It's been 3(?) months and he's still playing these things on a daily basis for a few hours a day. He claims, and I can see, that he's a much better drummer. Now he can keep time! (He refused to use a metronome in the past.) He now thinks in terms of patterns and fills, 16 beat measures, practicing with a part until you get it, trying different things to see which sounds best, etc. all concepts that he never got before.) On the down side, shortly after my first review, one of the foot pedals broke (he really does stomp the hell out of them though). He is pretty good at figuring things out though, so was able to fix it by himself. Had something to do with the way the contacts are made. Ever since his fix, it's still been going strong.

Installing it was a breeze and only took me 5 min at the most. After setting the weight, I threw on some vinyl, and i couldn't believe how much better it sounded than my last cartridge. I've been having a lot of fun with this turntable. It does everything it is supposed to.



A word to the wise ... turn off auto track split - it will start new tracks when you don't want it to.



Very easy operation - choose your disc, press the RECORD button to start the recording process in PAUSE mode, test the recording levels - play the disc from the beginning and press PLAY / PAUSE to start recording. Press PLAY / PAUSE again to pause recording when the track is finished. Press SPLIT TRACK to start a new track in memory, recording will still be in the pause mode. Choose your next disc - repeat... until you have all the tracks you want.



You can rearrange or delete tracks before burning the CD. When you have all the tracks as you want you can then burn to CD.



Another word to the wise - read the pamphlet before trying to burn to disc. I generally do not read manuals, and I could not figure how to get the music from internal memory burned on to a disc - but I looked it up and felt somewaht stupid when I read how to do it.



Also, on the front of the unit by the CD tray, it says you can only use MUSIC CD-R discs, but that is not true, I have burned quite a few regular CD-R discs. The pamphlet also states you can use regular CD-R.



The only problem I have had with the unit is the occasional extra track inserted when things get too quiet. This unit could use a combine track function to combat this problem. This is why I turn off auto track splitting. And you must do this every time you turn the machine on - it doesn't remember the setting.



Overall, the unit is very well built, perfoms flawlessly and I have had no problems recording to memory or to disc. The turntable also sounds better than doing this with my Audio Technica turntable hooked up to the stereo and dedicated CD recorder - there is better bass response with the ION.



Setup was fairly straightforward. If you've never set up this type of turntable before, balancing the tone arm may seem a little daunting - so read the instructions carefully.



This unit is a great idea which has been carried out nearly perfectly. I'd recommend this to anyone who has a vinyl collection they'd like to digitize.



The CD's that you burn with this will, however, still have the beginning lead in and ending lead out sounds since you have to start recording before the music actually starts to get the beginning of each track. The manual track split function combined with the delete track function can remedy this if that bothers you. If you do use these functions to get rid of extra lead in / lead out time, be sure you delete the extra noise tracks. It will not let you burn a CD if there is any track in memory of less than 4 seconds in length.



There are RCA Jacks on the back for output to an amp, or input from any line-level source, such as tape deck, CD player, etc. You can choose to record from the Line In source by flipping a swith on teh unit. I have not used the USB function on the turntable, nor the software that came with it as I have my own music software. It does come with the free Audacity software, which I've read is very good and updated frequently.



I was a little hesitant to purchase this after reading some of the problems people had, but the good reviews far exceeded the bad ones, and I decided to go ahead and buy this unit. I am glad I did.

Faced with the challenge of converting 300+ vinyl records to CDs, I searched Amazon for a converter and found the Ion USB Turntable with Built-in CD Recording. The product description matched exactly what I wanted, and when I received the product and began to use it, the description proved to be entirely accurate. The User Guide is very comprehensive and helpful. The product can be assembled with ease. The mode and function buttons bear labels that are clear both visibly and with regard to their meaning. The product produces CDs with excellent sound. The only negative is that the volume control knob does not have a marker to indicate the level at which the volume is set.

If you've ever used a cassette tape recorder to tape record albums, you will be right at home with this product. It will convert your old LPs in to CDs or MP3s, and the recording process is almost identical to the process used by the old tape recorders. This is good and bad - I bought one of these for my Dad (78 yrs young) for Christmas so he can save and listen to his collection of literally hundreds of jazz recordings, some so old they are mono or "hi fidelity" recordings. I spent hours teaching him how to use it, and as of today I have no idea if he was able to continue to burn CDs after I returned to my home across the country. Here's the deal: you have to learn to push a few buttons, insert a blank CD, and cue the record in the proper order. I can't remember the exact procedure now, but the idea is that you insert the blank CD, cue the record in a "sample" mode so that you can set the recording level with digital bars that graphically indicate the recording level (it helps if you know the loudest part of a record so you can set the max sound level at that portion of the recording), then you recue the record (lower the tone arm at the beginning), and when the needle pops into the groove, you press another button to start the actual recording. It will automatically separate your tracks, but you have to pause recording at the end of the first side of the record when you turn it over or else you will have a long silence in your recording that lasts as long as it took to flip it. So making a CD is not a simple procedure (insert a cd, play a record, and walk away expecting it to spit out a perfect CD). It takes some practice. But if your are willing to learn how to use it, this is an awesome product.

I bought two of these for a big record transfer project for a school. What a disappointment! ION is also the same company as Numark and the quality of their products has really declined. These things are cheaply made and all plastic. The "nu groove" cartridge and stylus that comes with it is useless junk and sounds terrible. I had to go buy a replacement stylus as soon as I received the unit. Even their sales department recommends upgrading to a better stylus!



Within about 50 records, one turntable started to break down! The speed began fluctuating, and the output jacks became loose and started buzzing.



I got the run around with Tech support. Emails were never returned, and I had to wait on hold a long time, only for them to give me lame things to try. Finally they admitted the unit was faulty, and set up a return.



GET THIS FOLKS, INSTEAD OF REPLACING IT, THEY SEND IT OUT TO RENO NEVADA FOR REPAIR AND IT TAKES 7 to 8 WEEKS!! Which is useless! They told me they didn't have any new product to replace it with. Probably because they are discontinuing it because it's junk!



This is buyers remorse in a very big way, don't waste your time or money!

Ther needles were received on a timely basis and work as expected. What was unsettling was that three weeks later I received a duplicate invoice from what appeared to be the same company, indicating they were shipping the needles. Price was twice what I was originally charged. I replied with a copy of the original invoice in a sharply worded email. I never heard back from them, nor was my credit card charged for the duplicate order and the order appeared never to have been shipped. I was wondering if someone broke into their order system and was phishing for information. Most disturbing!

This is a simple and ffective device that works very well. It comes with "Audacity Software" to let you operate on the sound files you create from records and tapes. I found that software to be a bit of a nuisance to learn and use. if getting the job done with simplicity--including cleaning up the output, I reco,emd buy a downloadable but not free software program like "Spin it Again". There's just to much to mess with wwith the software provided with the ION. I didn't want a saga, Just something I could keep at and get a lot of work acceptably done. Bottom line: Ion good, Audacity bad. "Spin it again" (sold seperately) good but has some quirks that must be overcome-but much quicker to learn and find out what the quirks are.

I have literally hundreds of vinyl records and have been eager to find something that will easily record them to iTunes. The criteria was it had to be easy to record, not take up a bunch of space and had to import into iTunes effortlessly. Well, I found it. A couple things I'd like to mention.



If you are on Windows 7 - go to the Ion website for instructions on how to change your computer settings so this will work. Glad I suddenly remembered seeing the instructions on their site when I was thinking about buying it otherwise I would have thrown this thing in the trash. It won't work unless you follow those setting instructions. Not sure about how it works with other operating systems. Also, I'm finding the sound isn't being recorded quite as loud as I'd like. It has a volume control but turning it up any further than it is results in too much distortion. I just ordered a new turntable cartridge on Amazon so will see if that makes a difference.



I've found you do have to sit there and tell it when there's a new track (song) although if you choose to use Audicity (comes with this) then you can do it at the end. But I find it's great to sit there and listen to my old records that I haven't played in years and check out the liner notes while I'm recording. I usually multi-task at my home desk while doing this anyway.



There is a bit more track editing needed than I hoped but not a big deal. As someone else wrote, when you flip the record over and record the other side it sometimes starts the track #s over again so I have to manually enter the numbers in.



As I said, I love the way it just imports into my iTunes. So, with all the recording I have to do it's daunting but I'm having a blast with this little gizmo.

When I first tried to use this item I had plugged it into the front of my computer.This ended up giving an audible popping sound.

The Ion service crew where helpful in explaining that it was best plugged directly into the back so as to cut down on wiring length to the board.It worked,popping gone. However,then I had no audio on my speakers as long as it was plugged in. I tried moving it to a 2nd input but still no audio unless I unplugged the cable from the box then rebooted my music file! Oh well!

Next, they don't say that you have to do the whole album before going to "next" after starting record. If you don't, you stop the

recording in the middle of the song. I was trying to save time and type info while recording!

Also,if you do one side of the album, recording stops and when you go to record the next side it starts as a 2nd album. Edit - edit - edit...you have to flip the album very fast,try cleaning it first!!

I'm also not a fan of I-tunes as a music system as it wants to take over my computer's music files. Also I don't find it user friendly,I-tunes, that is!

Don't get me wrong, the unit does it's job, it just needs better info so as not to waste time on trial and error.
