I love my Line 6 POD X3 Live Guitar Multi Effects Pedal. With this modern marvel, you should be able to achieve just about any tone you can imagine (the Line 6 website explains its capabilities in detail). With a little experimentation, you should be able to easily find your own unique tone.



After a brief tutorial, and a few minutes with the included manual, it was easy for me to dial through the hundreds of amazing presets. While this device is quite easy to use right out of the box, it might take years to discover all of its capabilities. Mostly I am using the POD X3 Live to replace my existing effects pedals (distortion, chorus, flanger, delay, wah) for use with my Stratocaster. I doubt if I will ever use those pedals again. I am using the device plugged directly into the guitar input on my amplifier; it sounds great.



I also appreciate the built-in tuner (which mutes while tuning, of course), the headphone jack, the microphone input, and the USB output (to use your computer for recording and mixing). Another great feature, is its ability for separate tone processing of the guitar and microphone (vocal) inputs.



I would really love to have a comprehensive instructional DVD that explains how to setup the various "stomps" and "mods." The manufacturer (Line 6) does have many instructional videos posted on their channel on a popular video website; but it would be nice to have select instructional videos (on a DVD) shipped with the product.

If you try to use this with an amp, it will not sound like it should. I've had mine for 6 months and have searched for something to make it sound like it does in the headphones. I've tried 3 different amps, yes plugging into the aux or return and a pair of monitors. The monitors sounded great, but mine were only 5" so they lacked a little depth for me especially on heavy distortion or drop D. I bought a Fender Passport 150 and it sounds great with the X3. I also use a Line 6 Variax and I can now go from Acoustic, sitar, Drop D Distortion, many more and they all sound fantastic! Again the X3 is fantastic, but only if you use it like it was meant to be(Live through a PA). I give it 5 stars! If it were stolen I would buy another.

WORD OF WARNING: Anyone who is a Mac User, Line6 support is horrible for the Mac.

Current programs and drivers are NOT working for Snow Leopard.

This is typical of Line6. SL has been out for developers for over a year. Line6 has chosen to ignore the Mac user base. I suggest another company, like Native Instruments.

I feel like I own every guitar amp ever made. It truly does imitate amps very well. It is a bit overwhelming to jump into the learning curve, but youtube videos were very helpful. I have yet to find a way to make my electric guitar sound like an acoustic, which is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to eliminate one guitar to my act. I believe it is the best effects pedal made. Maybe I haven't learned how to make it work correctly, but when I switch from A bank to D, then back to A, I am no longer on the preset that I had set up when I went to D. The manual that came with it was version A, and D is the current, so I had to print a 90 something page manual. But, I love it over all. I'm walking out the door to practice with it now.

This little pod has improved my recorded sound a lot. There are many tones to play with though you will probably only like a few. I really enjoy the interface and all the options. Never have had a problem going on 2 years now.

Ok, I don't know where to start. So I'll tell you, this thing is awesome. I spent a few months reading reviews, watching videos and finally I decided to buy the POD X3. I wasn't pretty sure if the videos were realistic, same thing about the reviews... but when "the kidney of rock" came to me, I was astonished. You can't imagine the variety of sounds you can achieve, and the parameters you can manipule are SO specific... it's incredible. I still can't believe this thing can do all this.



If you're looking for a REAL sound and you don't wanna spend your whole budget, I recommend this product. If you're looking for a REAL sound and you DO wanna spend your whole budget... I still recommend you this. Grab an amp, put it on a cabinet, select what kind of mic you want to place in front of this "virtual" amp, then add a stomp box, verb, delay, modulation effects, comp (the POD X3's compressor is SO great!), configure the ammount of drive and all that stuff and you're ready to go. You can use 2 tones at the same time, run them through one amp, through 2 separate amps, through the house PA directly, or send the signal into a console to record. You can record the tones in separate tracks, too. You can plug in a bass guitar, there are some cool bass amp simulations that can be VERY useful if you want to record in your home with your band, you can plug a microphone and send your voice through the POD, also with some cool effects (megaphone vocal, for example). You can do WHATEVER YOU WANT. The quantity of amp models, stomps, and all that stuff is AWESOME!



I bought the X3 and not the X3 live because I wanted something that I could handle myself with my bare hands, which is really comfortable to me. I was tired of going down to the floor to set my pedalboard's config. Then if you need foot control, there are lots of FBV pedals that you can plug into the pod X3 to be able to use your feet with this baby, and you won't be spending more than if you bought the X3 live!



So, I don't know what else to say, but if you're dubious about buying it or not... just buy it, you won't be disappointed! You'll love this thing more than your girlfriend.

Don't Waste Your Money...Buy a Fender G-DEC



Well I had read glowing reviews on this product from multiple websites and I must say that I was excited to receive my POD X3. I was hoping this unit would allow me to practice efficiently without having to take my Fender G-DEC on trips and gigs etc, however I was wrong.



Pros:

1. Has the ability to run both guitar and vocals (with independent effects) through this unit out to a house PA. Makes gigging easy. However you cannot run your backing tracks through this as well for practice or live use. (see Cons #1)

2. Has great guitar tones modeled after your favorite guitarist that you can download for free to your PC and the POD X3 (pretty neat).

HOWEVER: Fender G-DEC has many tones already built into its unit that sound just as good and it has a speaker and CD/mp3 input to boot...and cost less.

Cons:

1. No 1/8" CD/mp3 input for jamming along with your favorite tunes (contrary to what is advertised on MANY music retail sites for the POD X3)...be warned it's not there this is only available on the POD X3 Live (Amazon got the specs right.)

FENDER G-DEC has a cd/mp3 input which makes practicing easy and fun.

2. This unit (as do other line 6 devices) ALLOWS you to join Guitarport online for something like 7.99 per month which gives you access to download songs (backing tracks) to play along with your favorite artist, however if you terminate your user account these backing tracks can no longer be played using the proprietary Line 6 software (Gearbox), as I was informed this by line 6 when I terminated my membership (So what are you paying for?). The last thing anybody wants is another monthly service fee for something!

3. The online downloadable song backing tracks only have the bass and/or guitar removed so if you wanted to play guitar and sing using these tracks you are SOL. My vote is to find the backing tracks you want in the HAL LEONARD series of Play-Along cd/book combos which has the vocals and guitar removed.

FENDER G-DEC comes preloaded with Generic backing tracks for all styles of music (no online membership BS)

4. Customer Service: Once you can get to a rep it is good HOWEVER...Try and find their phone number on the line 6 website OR an email address, to contact Line 6 directly. Maybe I am an idiot, however I had to CALL their NON-toll free number to get questions answered (because one of the OTHER Line 6 products I tested hoping that it was as good as described was the Guitarport and I found that this had been previously registered to another customer so I HAD to contact Line 6 to straighten this out (returned the Guitarport, and was foolish enough to try the POD X3 thinking it would be a better product).



Conclusion: Don't waste your money, buy a Fender G-Dec which has tones of "tweekable" tones and NO silly online membership stuff. Stay away from proprietary software that limits the use of backing tracks. As a performer who relies on backing tracks to play and sing over I found the whole membership thing pretty stinky.



PS Remember this is only one man's opinion, however I am jaded by the ever increasing industry of monthly service fees that are adding up in my household and think that Line 6 should allow you access to the lessons and tracks for FREE because I already PAID $400 for the stupid product.



Buy a Fender G-DEC



One Thing I almost forgot! Recording with this unit has been touted as great...in reality all you need for PC recording is a Behringer EURORACK UB1202 ($74.99). Plug in whatever you want and run through a free program like Audacity...PRESTO you are now recording on your PC with effects like reverb at your disposal. No proprietary software. This is one other thing that kills me about musical equipment these days...if the product includes the "Revolutionary USB" input (that has been around for years) they tack an extra $6,000 dollars (you get my point)on to the product. You DON'T need it. Think of how many years stuff was recorded without USB interface. It is like the silly HDTV scam that retailers tell you. You should have FULL HD...why? Last time I checked 2 out of my 4 trillion cables were actually full HD.

I just bought the Pod X3 and find it to be an excellent, easy-to-use tool for playing gigs and recording. I own a good collection of tube amps including a JSX212 Combo, a Carvin BelAir, a Fender Blues Deluxe, a Mesa Express 5:25 and a ZInky Blue Velvet. All of these amps are excellent (with the Mesa offering the most low-medium volume versatility and the JSX offering the most high-volume versatility). Its great having different amps for different functions, but it is cumbersome to get all the sounds you want and to tweak your amps for your different desires. I own a Boss GT-10 and a Zoom G.9tt (I am a gear fanatic) and have to say that I like the POD the most. To my ears it offers the most tonal variety in the smallest package. The BOSS and Zoom are good and having the foot-pedal is great (which the X3 Live has as well) but the smaller POD is just easier to use and to modify. With a press on one button I can turn off pre-amps or stomps, make changes to pedal settings and switch between patches. I actually originally had the X3 Live, but I found the interface on the POD to allow for easier modifications to my patches. Its easier to make the changes on the on the X3 than on the Live version. It seems more cumbersome to navigate and customize on the pedal-based units in general.



In terms of sound quality, I run the POD through the clean channels of my various amps and they all sound fantastic. The models may or may not sound like the originals (I don't own an 18-watt Marshall), but I can get GREAT, responsive sounds out of the amp with ease. The eq is very responsive and the stomps can add thick layers of distortion, mod effects and delay to already great sounding amp models. BTW, using the 18-watt Marshall I was able to emulate the Clapton "woman tone" quite nicely - both live and plugged into my mac.



One more note - in comparison to the Boss and Zoom pedals, the POD has an active user community where you can download thousands of presets by other users (and Line 6 itself) that emulate the tones from great guitarists or specific sounds. Some of these are spot on. All said, this is a great tool that can make you sound like you have a basement full of expensive amps and pedals. I think if Satriani or Eric Johnson used it for their recordings, you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference - its that good.

I've had this X3 for about a week, and I'm loving it. I play a lot of Meshuggah, so a good, deep tone is really important, and this thing delivers.



You really have to know what you're doing with programming this sucker. All the included presets sound like garbage, to be honest. I mean, they are OK if you play crap music and don't mind some oldass AC/DC or Hendrix tones, but I don't, and I do mind.



So, I am happy to say I have created a pretty amazing collection of Meshuggah tones and am currently perfecting it to the best of my ability. The key is in finding the right amp/cab/mic combo (NO STOMP BOX), and the big trick is in using a cocked WAH set to about 75-100 percent. As for amp and cab, either use one of the many Line 6 branded setups, like the Insane or Lunatic amps (one based on the mesa/boogie amp) and/or matching cabs, or the one of the two "official" Mesa/Boogie amps and/or cabs, or just a combination of both setups, or whatever else. There really is a ton of customization available with this thing. (I'll upload my tone to Line 6's website when I'm fully satisfied with it.)



That's another great thing about this, you can download all the user-made and Line-6-made tones off of their website for FREE. We're talking hundreds, if not thousands of free patch setups. It's great. And when you plug it into your PC via USB, it auto updates the firmware and all that stuff. You can even control and create presets using an onscreen GUI with your mouse and can watch it change the screen on the POD. No joke.



I'm currently using it through my old Laney combo amp, which sounds really good with this thing. Another thing you can do is tell the POD what kind of a signal to send, like a "combo amp" or "power amp" or "studio direct mix", etc. It makes a big difference. I suggest using the direct mix mode, but with the Return input on the amp. Of course, I'm still experimenting...



I've done some mixing experiments, and so far so good. It sounds SO good double tracked. You can record direct via USB which is good, or hook it up to your amp and mic it as usual, which I think is best. Of course, if you have a preset made for your amp, you will have to make some changes with EQ or Presence since a condenser mic, I have found, adds some highs to the mix. What I'm saying is, a good sound going DIRECTLY from the POD to your studio headphones or PC will sound WAY different coming from your physical amp, and vise versa. The key is in saving a group of presets for each setup. I do this, and it works great.



The UI on the unit itself is really easy to use and intuitive. I could go on and on, but won't. All you need to know is it sounds really damn good, and I think Meshuggah used it when they recorded the Nothing Re-Release (their best sound to date, in my opinion) and all of Catch 33 and "I". That has to tell you something.



Oh, yeah....RTFM. :)
