 "Insanne =P" 2010-02-12
By Rob Setsfire (USA)
At first i was a little sketchy about these because there were 7 reviews on these headphones...but im glad i bought these. Im no audiophile but im a kid who is pretty picky about sound. The headphones just came in the mail about an hourrr ago and im listening to them through my computer now. So far so good!! The bass is great and punchy (at least to my ears) and the treble is great too. I was a little worried that these headphones would sound muddy with the bass but they defintely dontt!! I can hear some details in songs that i haven't heard on headphones ive had before. I own/owned skullcandy inkd earbuds, sony ex earbuds, sony mdr v150s, and probably others that i cant think of right now, and the ath-d40fs are definitely my most expensive headphones purchase and i LOVE them! I cant wait until they are fully burned in so i can experience the true potential of these headphones.

pros: detailed, comfyy, overall great sound with punchy basss ;)

cons: the only annoying thing with these headphones is that you have to go out and buy an adapter because it comes with a big plug that wont fit into my computer =/. I got mine at radioshack but if you can get a solid gold or silver one get it because itll make the connection better and more stable..but besides that these headphones are absolutely sickkk =P

P.S. THEY'RE BLACK HEADPHONES NOT WHITISH/GREYISH LIKE IN THE PICTURE BTW LOL

EDIT: after about a week of intense listening between me and my bro they sound more broken in now. The highs and lows are crisper, and the bass seems a little better. Idk maybe its just me but they sound better after using them for probably 5-6 hours a day between me and my brother for a week.

"Excellent sound, but soon stopped working" 2009-06-02
By J. Genson
I have a of hobby collecting headphones, and I've recently began reviewing the ones in my collection. I constructed a simple six-song test and rating system, where a score of 0 - 2 is abysmal, 2.1 - 4 is poor, 4.1 - 6 is mediocre, 6.1 - 8 is above average, and 8.1 - 10 is excellent.

I selected songs from a variety of genres. The songs were "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac, "Every Planet We Reach is Dead" by Gorillaz, "Concerto Grosso no. 26 in D Major" by Handel, "I Know You Are, But What Am I?" by Mogwai, "Afro Blue" by Triplexity, and "The Patient" by Tool. All songs were encoded in Ogg Vorbis at 192 kbps or higher, and I listened to them on an iAudio 7 with all sound effects turned off and the equalizer set to flat.

Sound Quality(9.2/10)

The Chain(9/10) - bass, mid tones, and treble are all flat and evenly reproduced. The bass is crisp and punchy, but not exaggerated. The sound stage is good, although not incredible. Instrument separation is clear and vivid.

Every Planet(10/10) - lows in this song are deep and responsive, but smooth and even at the same time. Mids and highs are also impressively vivid. The sound stage is moderately large, and instrument separation is fantastic.

Concerto(10/10) - the sound in this song is very flat and smooth over all frequencies(which I like, especially for classical). Instrument separation is crisp and clear. The sound stage is not huge, but pleasantly broad.

I Know You Are(9/10) - lows are nice and deep. Mids are rich and vivid. Highs are crisp and clear. The instrument separation is also very clear. Sound stage is definitely good, but not as amazing as other headphones in this price range.

Afro Blue(9/10) - the bass in this song is impressively low and punchy, but again, not exaggerated. Mids and highs are clean and even. Instrument separation is fantastic. The sound stage on this song wasn't as broad as I would like, but not bad.

The Patient(8/10) - music was evenly reproduced over all frequencies. Bass and mid tones were vivid, and highs were clean and clear. Instrument separation is also good. The sound stage, as before, is decent but not overly great. While this song sounded very good over the Audio Technicas, it was somewhat lacking in aggressiveness and intensity.

Overall Sound(9.2/10) - the Audio Technica ATH-D40fs sounded very smooth and balanced overall with clean, deep bass, vivid mid tones, and clear highs. Instrument separation was fantastic. The only complaint I have regarding sound quality was the sound stage, which was somewhat lackluster at times.

Design(3/10) - these headphones were comfortable to wear, if a bit heavy. I could listen to them for hours on end with little fatigue. While not particularly stylish, they exuded a sense a professionalism that is missing in most headphones. I give them such a low rating in design because they broke shortly after I bought them. I take good care of my headphones, but not long after I began listening to them, the left speaker would stop playing music intermittently, which leads me to believe there was a short somewhere in the internal assembly(I never actually found one in the headphone cable).

Noise Isolation(7/10) - while not the best noise isolation I've ever experienced from a pair of headphone(that award would go to one of the various IEMs I've listened to), these were quite good. I estimate they blocked around 10 - 12 DB of ambient noise along the entire range of audible frequencies.

Bottom Line(6/10) - I would like to give these headphones an 8 or 9. The sound quality was fantastic for sealed headphones at this price range, and almost everything else about them was good. Sadly, as I previously mentioned, the left speaker began behaving erratically shorty after I purchased them, and they had to be returned.

The sound is very flat. i thought these headphones were for enhanced bass. Iwanted bass, these didn't supply.

Pros:

Very comfortable fit.

11 foot long cable

Great for "studio"

stylish

light for its size

single sided cable

soft and comfortable padding

everything is flat which might be good if you wanted

Cons:

Very bulky

11 foot long cable

1/4 inch plug

Bass is not there, very flat

not recommended/ideal for portable players

Isn't very loud.

Overall:

If youre looking for STUDIO headphones, which give a true sound which is flat, this is the headphones for you. If youre looking for enhanced bass, look elsewhere. As studio headphones and listening to music, 5 stars. As headphones that is for enjoying music with great bass 2 stars.

"Looking for bass? You may want to look elsewhere." 2008-07-01
By FluffrNuttr (SoCal, USA)
I bought these headphones for the "enhanced bass" but was dissapointed. I'm not an audiophile or musician. I just want a pair of headphones that don't skimp on bass. I prefer the more fleshed-out sound heavier bass provides. Unfortunately I found these headphones to be the exact opposite! The sound was thin and brassy. (I only use them hooked up to my stereo.) Compared to the Sennheisers I've owned, these Audio Technica ATH-D40fs were downright nasal sounding. I wonder if I got a dud pair.

I get the feeling Audio Technica's are aimed more at the professional musician crowd who are able to discern sound better than me, and are pickier about a "truer" sound. Admittedly, the level of bass I want seems to be described by others as muddy or boomy or inaccurate. So while others are happy with these headphones, I'm not. I guess I want mud lol.

If you want bass check out the Sennheiser EH-250. I just bought a pair and I'm in pig heaven again, bass-wise. I can also recommend the Sennheiser HD-457, though they're not as comfy to wear as the EH-250.

BTW, the Audio Technica's come with a 1/4" plug so you may need a 1/4" to 1/8" stereo (not mono) adapter.

 "Worse than on-camera microphone" 2010-03-15
By cameraguy
I also purchased this microphone for the Canon Rebel T2i (I saw the other review after it was too late to cancel). The microphone is worse than the built-in microphone. It produces loud noise and doesn't cancel out any background noise. There's no way to adjust the gain/volume.

I bought this mic to use with my Canon T2i. It does sound a little better than the built in mic but just barely!

BUT the output is about 30% lower than the built in mic and worse, there is a fairly loud background hiss all the time!

Maybe this mic will work better with another type of camera or camcorder...

"Nice, but a bit more bass please. Great value/comfort." 2010-03-14
By X. Barnes (Detroit, MI USA)

 "decent for the price" 2010-02-10
By Adil Q (MD USA)
For the price, its too much to expect high fidelity from this pair. On the plus side, its reasonably comfortable though perhaps a tad heavy for my liking. The coiled cord looks solidly built, though the wires connecting the ear-pieces are thin and need careful handling. IMO, the balance of the sound is biased to mids and highs, the bass sounds a little "distant". Overall the sound is a bit muddy.

I use this pair to watch stuff on my computer, not for listening to music. I would recommend putting in a little extra if you care about the quality of playback, but this pair works for general use, and looks like it can take some damage.

 "Bad fit, quiet playback" 2010-01-16
By Levi Wilbert (Evergreen, CO)
I bought these for a class I had, Music Applications on the Personal Computer. I bought them from a store about 2-3 years ago for about $80. They sound fine, except the level is very low. I usually have to have my computer, iPod, or what have you turned up to 80 to get the playback I usually get at 60 (on a 0-100 scale). Also, the pair I bought hardly fit me. They are loose, and if lean down they easily fall off (and I don't have small head, in fact my head's a little larger than normal), and this is with the headphones adjusted to its smallest fit.

The only plus was that once they were at a good level, they sounded fine. No overly accentuated bass, highs sound pretty good.

I'm surprised to see they are now $30, as I bought them from a local retailer that is fairly prominent.

I was just displeased about the level and fit. Of course, I'm stuck with them now.

If you are buying these, I recommend trying them out to make sure they fit and also to listen to an album on an iPod or some device that you have familiarity with its normal playback levels.

Would not buy again.

"Perfect fit and and function for voice over" 2009-11-23
By Harlan Hogan
For the price and the dynamics involved in monitoring voice overs theses are hard to beat. Very comfortable on your HEAD and pocketbook I find the M20's a true bargain - they won't break the bank or your heart if you drop a pair too many times (don't ask!). Lot's of waaaaay more expensive cans out there but for most voice overs they are over kill. I team these up with my Porta-Booth [[ASIN:B0015TFO24 Porta-booth - Portable Sound Studio with Two Compression Sacs] and VO: 1-A microphone [ASIN:B002SMYUFY VO: 1-A Harlan Hogan Signature Series Voice Over Microphone] on the road.

"Good for the money, even better for a bit more." 2009-10-12
By Phil
While these headphones may seem to only offer a high degree of comfort they can in-fact pack a serious punch. For just a little bit more you can also get this FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier. These Headphones are designed to take some punch to get going because they are monitor headphones, and they do not noise cancel. But if you put that Headphone amplifier on it you can't even turn it up halfway or you will melt your own face off. I can't even turn it up a third of the way without my eye sockets bleeding.

In my honest opinion, I think these headphones and an amp will do the job for [...] bucks. So if you don't want to spend $[...] on some really kickin' headphones, this will do the trick.

The Audio Technica ATH ANC3 QuietPoint earbuds offer superior sound and reduce distracting background noise by 85% which is why Audio Technica is a world leader in the pro audio industry. Engineered to create a comfortable listening environment in areas with high ambient noise, these in-ear headphones feature a miniature microphone in each earpiece that picks up ambient noise (such as traffic, air-handling systems, etc.).  "Great for the value" 2010-02-04
By James C. Chiu (West Chester, PA USA)
For less than $50 this is a great noise cancellation device. Don't expect removing 100% of background noise, you have to spend greater than $200 for those and be big and surround the ears. These feel like turning the outside music volume from a 7/10 setting to a 3/10 setting. With the power off, the noise isolation part (just using ear plugs alone) is like changing the outside music volume from 7/10 to 5/10.

Sound quality is just average, not bad but not the best either.

These come in 3 different size plugs. The medium plugs come already installed inside the package.

There is also an extension cord to make the cord longer and also a 2 prong for use for some airplanes.

Comes in a nice black hard bag with pockets inside.

Only complaint: the wires aren't insulated so that any touching or brushing the wires against your clothes will create a static noise added to the music. It's ok if you don't move like in an airplane seat. Not meant for walking around or moving.

 "Quiet = A, Fidelity = C, Average = B" 2010-01-23
By Mr Lapin (Ohio, USA)
What I think some of the less satisfied reviewers here may be missing is a proper seal in the ear canal. These phones are NOT earbuds. The key is for them fit like earPLUGS. The earmold should go in more deeply than you think. If properly fitted they'll provide ample bass (but see below) and good noise reduction, and they won't slip or fall out. However, Audio-Technica's instruction booklet tells you essentially nothing about how to fit them.

First, make sure you're using the correct unit for each ear. The letters L and R are printed on the ear side of the phones, but they're almost impossible to read. Hold one of the phones in front of you, the silicone earmold pointing to the left (as if you were about to put it in your right ear). The earmold should be pointing upward at about a 45 degree angle. The wire exiting from the phone should be running away from you. No? Grab the other phone.

With your left hand, pull up gently on the top of your right ear. With your right hand, push the earmold *upward* into your ear canal with a slight twisting and rocking motion. Repeat with the left ear, of course.

Much of the ambient noise should be gone, before you even switch on the dongle. If you still hear lots of noise, or if the phones fall out just by the weight of the cord, you haven't inserted them right. If necessary, try different earmold sizes. In many cases you may need a SMALLER earmold, not a larger one, so the earmold goes deeply enough into the ear canal. Also try adding a drop of K-Y Jelly or similar skin-safe lubricant to the silicone earmold. You snicker! I'm not joking. It works.

The cord shouldn't hang down from your ears. The wires should exit forward and slightly upward. Loop the wires over the top of your ears and bring the wires together behind your head, not under your chin. The sliding bit of plastic on the phone wires snugs up the wires, to keep them in place over your ears. Bring the cord forward over one shoulder, and clip the dongle to your collar or pocket. This will eliminate the thudding noise that dangling wires transmit to your ears when they hit something.

How do these phones work? I'm not sure the ANC reduces noise by 20dB - I'd estimate it at something closer to 12dB - but it's still quite a substantial difference. The pure isolation phones (without ANC) such as the Shures and Etymotics are great if you want to shut out the world entirely. The ATH-ANC3s don't isolate quite as completely, so conversation is still possible (if a bit awkward). Just hit the mute button.

Sound quality: Warm and fat, with a sizable mid-bass peak. The high end is a bit pinched and not too clean. Instruments lack a sense of air around them. Stereo imaging isn't what it could be. There is some audible hiss when the ANC is on, but it's minimal, and far less objectionable than the background noise it's eliminating.

I'd characterize the ATH-ANC3's as a rock- or pop-oriented sound. Classical music lovers might want to consider the Shure or Etymotic isolators - but remember, they cost 3-4 times as much. For many folks, these phones will sound just fine and will almost certainly trounce the $1.50 cheapies that came with their mp3 players.

Build quality: I don't see too much to gripe about. The dongle feels reasonably sturdy, though the clip looks flimsy. These phones are made in China, unlike earlier (and more expensive) Audio Technica products that were made in Japan. Be aware that they may not have passed through the kind of quality control that the name would suggest. But also remember what you're paying for them.

Bottom line is that these phones provide significant relief from noise while still allowing conversation. The sound is acceptable if not stellar. I don't think I'd pay A-T's MSRP for them, but at anything under seventy bucks or so, they're a more than respectable value, especially if most of your listening is rock, jazz, or pop music.

 "Great buy!" 2009-11-16
By R. Siemens (Malaysia)
I purchased these noise suppression earbuds for 2 purposes; flights and riding my motorcycle. I am very pleased to say they work fabulous for both. Not only do a great job of eliminating background noise but they sound great! I have the Bose earbuds but I think these actually produce a nicer sound; I immediately heard nice crisp highs that I didn't with my Bose.

The only negative thing is that the right bud seems to slide out of my ear canal so I have to keep pushing it back in. I don't seem to have the problem with the left.

They aren't as comfortable as the Bose but the Bose have no noise suppression or isolation at all.

Definitely a great buy at $55US.

They fit well, sound great and block out much noise, but not as much as I'd like. Still, these are earbuds, and I didn't expect them to block out as much noise as full on noise cancelling head phones.

Overall, I believe these are a very good product.

"Very good, but not the best fit" 2010-02-17
By S. Benz (San Diego)
I have just started using these headphones and two things stand out.

1) The sound quality is far better than my old set (Panasonic RP-HT355). Deeper base and a crisper overall sound that was obvious immediately after swapping.

2) The fit of the ear muffs is not the best. There should be a little more padding so the speakers don't press against my ears. This becomes slightly bothersome after about an hour of wear.

Overall, these are great headphones and I'm glad I have them (got them for Christmas). They are a good value at the current price of $46.58.

"I don't get what all the hype was about." 2010-02-07
By A. C. Texidor
I was looking for a good pair of on ear headphones and I decided to go with the M30's based on my previous experiences with the brand and customer reviews.

I used the headphones for less than 24 hours. I wasn't impressed with the sound quality but it was decent overall, for $44 why complain? I listened to many different generes of music even watched a movie on my laptop. They started to feel uncomfortable after having them on for an hour or so, not unbearable but definitely uncomfortable. Then I started to notice that the right ear was cutting in and out, I figured it mightve been the audio jack from the device I was listening to. I tried it on several different devices and it was still cutting in and out. Probably recieved a defective unit, but it was enough for me to return them.

If you're looking for a decent pair of on ear headphones for seldom use, go for it. Other than that, I don't recommend these.

i cant use any techincal terms as i am not a serious audiophile, but i am a serious gamer. i use them onboard an aircraft carrier during my off time, and since i cant connect to Xbox Live, i dont need a mic. these are PERFECT. i can crank my games and movies without bothering anybody, but i can still hear anything serious (alarms, announcements, etc.) so they are a great blend of sound blocking and still able to be aware of surroundings. i have never dropped over $30 on cans before (previously had a pair of sony cans for that price and they sound cheap now), so i am glad i plunked down some extra green for these.

as for comfort, i have worn them for about 5 hours non-stop while playing xbox and they feel fine. i have rather normal sized ears and they fit perfect. sometimes they do feel a bit constrictive around the tops of my ears but i think i just need to adjust the band to take some weight off. speaking of the band, its perfect also. i wear a 7 1/4 hat and these dont pinch my very normal sized noggin at all. i've heard of nightmares where people can only wear thier cans for a couple hours before thier band feels like a vise. imagine my relief when i discovered these are barely noticable.

sound quality is top-notch. amazingly deep base without sacrificing much, if any high frequency detail. not muddy or tinny, just right while sounding rich and crisp. i almost prefer them to playing while listening to speakers! seriously, these are the best headphones i have ever owned.

"superior sound quality and comfort for the money" 2010-01-19
By Julius Treve (Vermont)
I guess my ears are a little big, but I wasn't able to enjoy the sennheiser hd 202 series. So I got these.

They fit over my ears so snuggly and comfortably, I can wear them for hours and hours and it doesn't hurt my ears at all, feels very good. They also bonus as earmuffs in the cold. The sound isolation is pretty great as well (though nothing near professional earmuffs). Plus, the sound quality is quite clear. Obviously not as good as a much more expensive pair of audiophile headphones, but for the price of the ath-m30s, you get some great sound. The bass gives a really nice punch.

Also the build quality is superb. Very solid feel to them. The headphone jack has a serious weight to it. Very pleasant.

Totally recommended

I have been involved in home studio recording for over 4 years now and I am very impressed with these headphones. I can't imagine how anyone could not be considering the price. I previously used a pair of Sony headphones that were in the same price range and they were crap compared to these. Funny because I never really gave audio technica the time of day.

"A great microphone - well worth the price" 2010-01-21
By Peter Anderson (Shakopee, MN, USA)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R19JLENB1GO2Q4 I recently bought the Audio Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB microphone to use for some video voiceover work that I'm currently doing. I've never owned anything beyond a standard PC USB microphone, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say, however, that this microphone sounds amazing. My voice comes through crystal clear with no distortion. Awesome!

This video is of the unboxing of the unit when I first received it.

"Great if you use built in sound card" 2010-01-20
By Joseph W. Manning (Bay Area, California)
Don't get me wrong when I did use this mic it was very clean and had great sound. The only problem is that my DAW only allowed one sound card at a time. So I couldn't use my external sound card and the USB mic at the same time. The DAW I am using is Ableton and the audio interface is a M-Audio Fast track pro.

Anyway I just returned it and got the non usb version.

"microphones are apparently all blemished, toxic chemical included" 2010-01-16
By Daniel J. Knight (Albuquerque, NM)
Forget this as a pristine gift if you are hoping for one.

These microphones are apparently all blemished. I thought I got a dud at first, but then I got a replacement from amazon which was also just as bad looking. I've uploaded two pics (they are side by side). I also noticed that the seller who has uploaded his own, shows a third one upclose, and there are two black spots you can see in his picture...

I'd uploaded a audio video sample but my VIA 1.2 GHz processor can't handle this microphone for some reason even though it can use the built in microphone just fine.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this doesn't come with its own software, so I wasn't able to adjust the microphone settings, I had to use vista's help feature to figure out how to adjust them, and you can't do it manually, you can only let it decide the level, bleah. I wish I had XP installed.

Another problem is the faux leather case, which gasses off a WD-40 like smell and makes me sick. Whatever this smelly chemical is it is apparently common in cheap chinese plastic products and has caused me headaches and provoked me to repeatedly try and puke. Leave it to China to include toxic waste with your purchase.
