The condenser microphone consists of a thin conductive membrane stretched very close to a stationary plate. High voltage is applied between the membrane and the plate. As the membrane vibrates, electrons move. These moving electrons are sensed as voltage. This voltage can be strengthened (but not necessarily increased) by silicon. The GXL2200 is inspired cosmetically, mechanically, and electrically by early generations of European masters. Features include (but are not limited to) an internal hi-pass filter. Elastic shock mount and protective pouch are included. P48 (48V) phantom power is required.

The Audio Technica AT4040 Cardioid Condenser Studio Microphone is a versatile large-diaphragm mic that features a true condenser design which is externally polarized and utilizes Audio-Technica's latest transducer technology with state-of-the-art surface-mount electronics and transformerless circuitry. Audio-Technica's engineering team developed an entirely new large-diaphragm element for the AT4040, designed specifically to provide smooth, natural sonic characteristics with a wide dynamic range and the ability to handle extremely high SPL's. The AT4040 has a cardioid polar pattern and utilizes an aged, vapor-deposited-gold large-diaphragm capacitor element. A nickel-plated brass element baffle has been precision-machined to provide enhanced element stability and optimal sensitivity. An open acoustical environment of the symmetrical housing assembly minimizes unwanted internal reflections. In addition, the AT4040's two-micron-thick diaphragm provides accurate reproduction of even the subtlest sounds without sacrificing high-frequency performance. The AT4040 features an extended flat frequency response (20-20,000 Hz), a wide dynamic range (133 dB, 1 kHz at max SPL), and can handle high SPL's (up to 145 dB, 1 kHz at 1% T.H.D., 155 dB with 10 dB pad). The AT4040's distinctive transformerless circuitry virtually eliminates low-frequency distortion and retains the ability to deliver high-speed transients. The AT4040 requires 48V phantom power and has a switchable low-frequency roll-off (at 80 Hz, 12 dB/octave). In addition, a heavy-duty Audio-Technica AT8449 shock mount is included to provide mechanical isolation and secure mounting, as is a dust cover and protective microphone carrying case.Audio Technica AT4040 FeaturesDesigned for professional recording and critical applications in broadcast and live soundExternally-polarized (DC bias) true condenser designTechnically-advanced large diaphragm tensioned specifically

 "LOVE it!!!" 2010-07-19
By R. Jackson (Newburyport, MA USA)
This mic is fantastic! I've been singing, writing, and recording for almost 30 years and this mic is pretty much just as good as all of the silly expensive German mics I've used in larger studios over the years. There's a very slight presence peak, but nothing like most of the other Chinese mics. It isn't shrilling or peaky at all. Male tenor vocals and acoustic guitar sound great without any need for EQ whatsoever beyond a hi pass filter for the sub 100hz stuff. This mic is also an excellent candidate for a Michael Joly mod, he calls it one of the 7 audio wonders of the world because it makes no sense that this mic is this good at under $200. Michael mods these mics and you'd be hard pressed to be able to tell the difference between this one and the famous U87 with the German name that starts with an "N". I'm using it totally stock and it's been great. Buy it.

"Awesome Value for the Money" 2010-05-04
By Patrick Gleason (Baltimore, Maryland USA)
I'm not an expert in my home studio by any means, but the MXL V67G microphone delivered what it said it would - transparent, warm, clear duplication of sound. Just keep in mind that it's a large diaphragm condenser so it picks up EVERYTHING. If you don't have a space where you have eliminated ambient noise or excessive reverb in the room you might want to go with another mic - maybe something along the lines of a Shure SM7B that is directional and doesn't pick up as much ambient sound.

I'd buy this mic again. It might not be as nice as mics costing hundreds or thousands more, but compared side by side, I'm not sure that a novice like me with a home studio would even be able to make use of something more expensive - it would be money wasted.

 "Great Crisp Mic" 2010-01-21
By T. Colston
This mic isn't a production studio quality professional mic. This mic does sound good and could pass for one if tweaked properly. That said, I used a basic black condenser that most likely was entry level MXL that I was unable to grab the correct make and model. That mic was a bit muddy and muffled unless tweaked properly and it works with EQ'ing. This mic was out of the box sharp and crisp. It does need a bit of a pre-amp and more than others. I find this mic to be great for podcasting (so far) professional quality audio with little sound engineering experience.

If you are very picky and know exactly what you want, please drop money on the more expensive and specific mics.

If you really aren't picky, do not use mics for one particular thing, and just want a cheaper mic that will get the job done nicely - this microphone is for you. A+ recommend.

"Good mic for the price" 2010-06-16
By William Corsair (Leavenworth County, KS USA)
A good mic for the price. As others have noted about condensers, however, they pick up everything. A bit muddy in the low end, but a nice mic nonetheless.

The mic should be on a stand or boom, because holding it in your hand picks up every last bit of handling noise. Very annoying.

"Not as good for VO work as I had hoped" 2010-03-20
By D. Fichtner (American in Seoul, SK)
I would rather give this mic 3 3/4 stars, but can't feel right about giving it 4.

Please note that this review is only in terms of using it for voice-over work at a range of 12 to 18 inches. I don't use it for anything else.

I'm a little disappointed with the sound, and feel it's a bit muddy in the low-mid range. I also don't feel like this mic has as wide of a dynamic range as I had hoped. This mic seems to deliver more of a compressed "news" sound than what I'd call a professional VO sound. The low end is also a smidge boomy, rather than full and moving.

It should be noted that I am also using a small Behringer board on its own phantom power. If I had a better preamp, perhaps this mic would "wake up" a bit. I have used the internal battery-powered preamp, but found it was slightly less desireable to the audio board's pre's.

Don't get me wrong -- this isn't a bad microphone. I think it would do well for the money if I had used it more for it's intended purpose. I just feel like I could have done better purchasing something else for a VO mic, given the price I paid. Also, it doesn't reject noise in my room as well as I had hoped it would. If I put the mic in an insulated box, this improves a lot.

"Well made, warming up to it" 2010-01-05

I am running this on a Panasonic HMC150. Sound quality is good, but I'm disappointed in how much it picks up from behind the mike. I was really expecting something much more directional.

"Very Good Mic for Voiceover Work" 2009-06-07
By Matthew Armstrong (Seattle, WA USA)
I purchased the NTG-2 as a voiceover mic to use for audiobook production and VO recording. I'm running the mic through the preamps on an M-Audio ProjectMix I/O and into Pro-Tools M-Powered 8. I run the incoming signal through the Waves SSL Channel plugin for some light compression, and that's it. I rarely need to EQ.

The resulting tone is clean and clear without being too intimate. If I get too close, it tends to get a little boomy and the low-mid ranges are a touch muddy. However, if I position the mic about 12-18 inches from the mouth of the VO artist, and slightly above the axis of the mouth, the sound quality is stellar. On male voices, in particular, the mic lends a depth and warmth that is often desirable for certain types of voice work. As would be expected with a mic of this type, the proximity effect is fairly pronounced.

Being a shotgun mic, it does an excellent job filtering out much of the background noise if your space is not sound-proof. (For instance, I'm using a small booth in which one wall is an exterior wall with very little sound insulation. Even when cars and trucks drive by, the mic won't register the sound.) It's an excellent choice for small project studios in homes. The mic does a good job of not catching every single saliva slurp or tongue noise while keeping the voice sounding natural.

The included wind screen is a little on the wimpy side, and it's unfortunate that the mic doesn't come with a shock mount...but that's not uncommon for mics in this price range. Likewise, I wish the mic had come with a decent hard case rather than the pleather zippered pouch that comes with, but again, that's not uncommon in this price range.

I've used four very different mics for VO work: a Studio Projects C100 Large Diaphragm Condenser, an AKG C1000 small diphragm condenser, a Heil PR40 Large Diaphragm Dynamic, and the Rode NTG-2. I was using the Heil almost exclusively until I got the NTG-2. Now this is my first-call mic for 80% of my VO sessions. For the price, it really can't be beat for high-quality spoken word recording.

Pros:

* Great Mic for the Price

* Narrow Pickup Pattern to reduce noise

* Clean and clear tone

* Natural sound

Cons:

* Can get a little boomy in low-mid ranges if speaker is too close

* Pronounced proximity effect

* No shock mount/case included

 "Quality Sound" 2008-02-19
By Skyler DDB
I have my NTG2 connected to a Canon GL2 through a Beachtek XLR adapter, and I think this mic sounds pure and true. In fact, when I monitor my sound it doesn't even seem like I'm listening through the mic. I've used Audio-Technica's AT897, and though it is a decent microphone, I believe that NTG2 is the better choice. Besides the great quality sound, here is a list of why I like it so much:

-Wonderful super-cardioid pick-up pattern

-Well functioning bass roll-off switch (for excessive wind)

-Phantom or battery power

-Max sound input @ 131dB (AT897 only 115dB on battery power)

-Very Durable

There are some things I don't like:

-The battery life is not nearly as good as the AT897

-Need to use a flat-head screwdriver for bass roll-off switch

-Brand sticker is coming off

-Wind screen is just OK

The stock wind screen isn't going to be that great any shotgun mic. And the bass roll-off switch is made to prevent accidental switching. Just keep an extra AA battery in your bag and you'll be happy.

"Great LDC mic for price" 2010-03-06
By M. Morgan (Olive Branch, MS)
I bought a few LDC lately. The bluebird, the mxl 990, and this one and I must say for vocals this mic is better than the bluebird in my opinion. It has great clarity and it picks up hi's and low's great.... I would recommend to anyone but you must have a good preamp to get the full experience. I don't even use the pads so they probably make even more of a difference. very touchy gain and shockmount is pretty weak but the mic is nice!!!!

"excellent LDC for the price" 2009-07-28
By G. W. Schumacher (New York City)
I have had my Studio Projects B1 for a little over a year now, using it often in my home studio and for location recordings. For the price this is probably one of the best large-diaphragm condenser mics available. I've never heard the kind of low- or mid-range muddiness that seems to plague the comparably-priced MXL or Audio-Technica condensers. The mic sounds clear and accurate through the (excellent) preamps in my Alesis iO|26 firewire interface.

I've been using the B1 primarily for vocals (singing), but it works for a lot of things: acoustic guitar, hand percussion, and as a room/ambiance mic. I've also used it on a guitar amp with satisfying results. To my ears the mids and highs have pretty good clarity and detail without getting harsh; and the pads and high-pass filter switches are handy things, offering more options for getting a better sound at the source rather than trying to "fix" things in the mix with EQ (which is a chore and generally doesn't sound as good).

While there are certainly microphones on the market that have better overall clarity and presence, they tend to cost much, much more than this. One day I'll buy an AKG 414, and I'm sure it'll be worth the $850 or whatever, but the B1 meets my recording needs right now. Therefore I have rated the B1 microphone 5 stars - superb, top-notch, highly recommended.

Five stars notwithstanding, a couple notes for people considering buying this microphone:

- You will need a pop filter if you will be using it for vocals. The B1 ships with a foam windscreen, but it colors the sound and to my ears it's unsatisfactory.

- The included shockmount has some shortcomings. For one, it is difficult to insert and remove the microphone - you have to pry the plastic open with a quarter or a screwdriver, break out the elbow grease, and grunt and cuss at it for a while before it finally works. With all that rough treatment the little bungee things get stretched out, although SP gives you a replacement set. Finally, the hinge is somewhat flimsy and unreliable. It needs to be tightened a bit past the point of sensible tightness, otherwise the whole thing will flop over unexpectedly, and your snazzy B1 microphone might plummet to the floor (this is bad).

- The "leatherish" zippered case is okay (but unpadded) until the zipper breaks catastrophically, which will probably happen sooner rather than later.

"Finally, a condenser I'm thrilled with. And the price was excellent!" 2008-09-22
By D. Fichtner (American in Seoul, SK)
I'm so happy with this mic. After going through two other condensers (an MXL990 and a Shure KSM27) which I got rid of, I'm finally content. The best thing is that the price is outstanding. This mic is priced far lower than what it should be.

The Studio Projects B1 has a wonderfully warm low end to it that still has detail. I have a midrange voice, and it fits me very well. The highs are not so overly "essy", as many other cheaper mics are. They are clear and just right. I barely feel a need to add much for EQ.

My previous experience with an MXL 990 was not a good one. I returned it in a day, due to the muddy lows and weird high end. I also had a Shure KSM27, which is probably better suited for high-pressure sound applications than VO's. I didn't care for its boxy highs sound, and sold that off.

The Studio Projects B1 is just incredible for the price. You can actually hear it if you do a web search on transom dot org mic shootout. It sounds better than mics costing thousands.

Really, an outstanding product. People say the C1 is better, but I just can't imagine myself needing it -- I'm so thrilled with this B1 for VO work.

The only con I'd say is the rather cheap basket holder. It comes with a free windscreen, though, which is a nice touch.

Remember, v2 of his mic has the extra -10 and -20 pad switch, as well as a two low-cut modes at -75, and I believe -150. Both work fairly well.

Get it!

 "Excellent poor man's studio!" 2010-04-14
By Margus Riimaa (Pittsburgh)
I am a pianist and use the mic to record myself. I am very pleased with the results, except there is a little background noise (like electricity).

I did one recording with it in a hall. Then one with professional equipment in a studio - two microphones each cost $3000.

And I am more pleased with my USB.007 recording, because the mics are close, but the big hall gives in total much nicer sound.

Highly recommended!

 "Great Condenser Microphone" 2010-04-11
By Josh Adams (Fort Wayne, IN USA)
This was the first condenser microphone I purchased when looking for a USB solution to start a podcast. I chose this microphone for various reasons, but the one that stuck out to me the most was its ability to record in stereo. I know, that might not make sense at first. Why would a podcaster want a microphone to record in stereo? Well, in addition to just doing the solo approach during a podcast, I wanted a versatile microphone that I could use out at events to aide in interviews. With this mic I am able to set it on the tripod provided and place the microphone between me and another person while conducting the interview. During playback the listener will hear two voices on different sides simultaneously, mimicking a real conversation as if the listener was in the middle of it. Perfect.

Pros:

-Awesome hard case provided with it.

-Very solid build on everything included, even the tripod. It all just "feels right"

-Ability to record in stereo AND mono

-Indicator light lets you know it's working.

-Windscreen (NOT a pop filter) is included. Most other manufacturers to not include this.

-Low, Med, High attenuation switch on back of microphone to allow adjustments quickly.

-USB plug and play works flawlessly

-Great documentation provided

Cons:

-Skip the free audio editing software, not worth your time

-Windscreen fits a little loose over the mic (could be a problem, ahem...IN THE WIND)

-Doesn't seem to have the total audio quality as the AT2020 USB, but it's so close that

your opinion could be completely different.

Overall, in this price range you cannot go wrong with the MXL 007. Highly recommended.

 "Great stuff" 2009-12-07
By Ferbose (Pasadena, CA United States)
The first USB mic I bought was Blue Snowball to record my fiddle playing. It sounded OK but the coloration was pretty obvious. Since I am a serious audiophile, I guess I should not expect much from a $99 mic. The I decided to record in stereo, thinking that may sound better, which led to my purchase of MXL USB.007. Although USB.007 costs about the same per channel as the snowball, it's sound quality is much better. The details and tonal accuracy is much improved. Although the results are not quite professional-quality, I can't really hear any obvious shortcoming even with my hi-end playback system. MXL did a great job of balancing the sound. With a simple mic stand and a laptop, I can make a decent home recording with no hassle. Hey I think this mic will allow just about anyone to make decent home recordings. That's pretty amazing.

"Amazingly user friendly high quality microphone" 2009-10-11
By Carl R. Reiter (USA)
I recently purchased this Microphone and am absolutely amazed at the quality of sound. I am a violinist, and have used it to make recordings in house. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so for a sample recording made on an hp laptop go to [...]. The "Leclair Duet" was recorded live with this mic, as was "Away in the Manger."

The mic is quite user friendly, plut it in and record. Recording was made with "Free Audio Editor" which can be found on the web.

 "A fantastic microphone!" 2009-10-01
By Sarah (Chicago, IL)
I purchased this to record performances of my professional flute/piano classical group, the Lunae Duo. We have used it to record rehearsals and performances and are very pleased with the sound quality. In fact, it is so clear, we plan to upload the audio on our website [...] for promotional purposes! It comes with an attractive leather case and the usb chord is long enough to use with a full size mic stand or computer. The desktop stand is very sturdy and the microphone screws into it for complete security.

Designed with ease-of-use in mind, the new MXL.006 features a large gold diaphragm that delivers a big, rich sound characteristic of studio and broadcast microphones. Unlike most studio condenser microphones, however, the MXL.006 is a USB (Universal Serial Bus) instrument that connects directly to a computer without the need for external mic preamps. Now, anyone requiring high quality, professional sound on their computer can record music or dialog by simply connecting to a standard USB port. Featuring support for USB 1.1 and 2.0, this exceptionally easy-to-use microphone even includes gain adjustment settings via the built-in three position attenuation switch.

Working with the new MXL.006 is a pleasure. As a plug and play device for both Windows and Macintosh, it requires no special drivers whatsoever. Simply connect the microphone’s USB cable to a computer’s USB port, and installation is quick and effortless. In addition to recording instruments or voice for home recording applications, the new MXL.006 is the perfect microphone for podcasting or adding dialog to presentations and other multimedia projects. It is also the perfect solution capable of opening new possibilities for radio and news broadcasters and for location recording.

Unlike electrets or dynamic microphones typically used for computer work, the MXL.006 has an extremely smooth, natural sound typical of what one would hear on a professionally produced CD or radio show. The analog section of the new MXL.006 microphone features a 20 Hz-20 kHz frequency response, a large gold diaphragm, pressure-gradient condenser capsule, and a 3-position, switchable attenuation pad with settings for Hi (0 dB), Medium (-5 dB), and Lo (-10 dB), making it easy to configure the microphone to virtually any sound source. The digital section features a 16-bit Delta Sigma A/D converter with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. Protecting the instrument’s capsule is a heavy-duty wire mesh grill with an integrated pop filter.

To make recording a trouble-free process, the new MXL.006 features a red LED behind the protective grill. This LED informs the user that the microphone is active and correctly oriented toward the user. To complete this terrific package, the new MXL.006 ships with a travel case, a desktop microphone stand, a 10-foot USB cable, windscreen, an owner’s manual, and an applications guide.

 "Great Mic" 2009-08-27
By Denny Ferrassoli (Palmdale, CA)
Purchased this mic for podcasting and I am very impressed. I did a bit of research and found a few audio recordings from various mics and the MXL USB.006 was the one that stood out amongst the rest. If you've ever watched/listened to a recording of yourself and said "is that what my voice really sounds like when I talk!?" then you will be absolutely amazed at what your voice really sounds like with this mic. My wife was also impressed at the quality and she had no trouble jumping on the mic and giving it a test run with her vocals. Very clean, rich sound. I also purchased a pop filter, which was recommended by a few reviews, you can certainly tell the difference but still a great mic even without it.

"Beyond impressed with its ease of use and value..." 2009-03-19
By M. Laws (Oswego, NY)
When it comes to recording, I pretty much know nothing. And I have no problem being the first to admit that. Anything technical has never really been my forte. But when I decided to go pro with my humor blog and as an added bonus for my readers, offer an audio mp3 of me reading each post aloud, I realized real quick that not just anything will do.

Three years ago, I developed a cyst on one of my vocal cords. We didn't get to it fast enough and when it burst, it managed to permanent damage my voice when a piece of the left cord went AWOL; it's been MIA ever since. Seeing how my vocal cords cannot ever completely close, I constantly sound hoarse; as if I have a cold. Some days are worse than others. I needed a microphone that could compensate for this as well as my simplistic technical skills and short attention span. A great guy down at The Guitar Center recommended this microphone to me.

I read the owner's manual immediately. It was the least I could do after all of the goodies Marshall included (cool case, desk stand, etc). Amongst the advice, they mentioned how dropping the microphone or even bumping it can damage it enough to cause what I see other reviewers tend to complain about. It's always easier to blame to manufacturer than admit you're a klutz, I suppose. But at the same time, the reviewers very well could've taken perfect care of the microphone as instructed-- but the 18 year old playing with it at the store it came from didn't. Who knows.

All I know is this. I followed the instructions and suggestions (i.e. purchasing a pop filter, placing the mic in the middle of the room, and everything else) and within seconds of USBing it into my PC, it was ready. My voice sounds ridiculously damaged as it should. And I'm as happy as a lark.

"Convenient and flawless performance on a Mac - truly plug and play" 2008-11-16
By A. Cheng (Texas)
I've been a home recordist for about 30 years. I've owned a variety of mics, from old Crown PZMs to higher-end Audio Technicas and a few exotic Germans. These days, I don't do as much recording as I did when I had dreams of becoming the next Nils Lofgren, but I occasionally like to doodle with music. These days, I'm a great believer in the ease and rock steady performance of Garageband on the Mac. I honestly much prefer working with it, rather than many "better" programs out there. It's just so solid on the mac. The reason for this long intro is just to introduce my approach to recording. I want stuff that works, and that works with little muss or fuss. When I sold of my last AT stereo mic and E-MU 4040 preamp, I thought I was done with wrestling with wires and recording. Well, I caught the bug again lately and felt guilty about ridding myself of all my equipment. But I wanted ease and convenience and I started researching the USB mics out there. I listened to about every sample available, and I was fairly sure the MXL mic were worth investigating further. They have a rich, full-bodied sound which I like. They also seemed to suffer less from ambient noise than the Snowball and Sansom mics. The MXL sounded a little darker, which some might think meant a bit deader, but I was sure that wouldn't be the case when it came down to recording. And I was right. First of all, the .006 works flawlessly. I plugged it it. My mac recognized it and I was up and rolling without latency. Occasionally you'll get hit with latency in Garageband -- but that usually just requires a restart. Then it's gone. The MXL was up and running in less than a minute. No problem getting enough power from my USB port, something I even had problems with with an old Belkin USB mic adapter. No, the MXL worked great. It's fairly well made, the only "suspect" component being the gain switch, which is pretty inexpensive and felt a little unsure. But it works fine, so I wasn't too worried about it. Plus, look at the price of this mic. The sound? Well, I would rate it an 8.75, which I think is quite flattering. I was able to mic myself singing with my guitar amp about 8 feet way and achieve a nice mix. And it recorded my 5-year old's faint, faint whisper (too shy to talk into the mic) perfectly. Stunningly, actually. So this mic is actually capable of great detail and sensitivity when your hitting it within its working range. Not dead sounding at all. I really like it's balance and design which make for quick and easily recordings without a whole lot of tweaking. As far as vocals, my teenage daughter voice sounded fantastic. Very nice with female vocals. I really like my "voiceover" sound with this mic. Rich and fully, but not over bloated. As far as my singing, it handles dynamics great and, as I said, it will handle a whisper to a shout without blinking. It's not a 100% 3-dimensional and rounded like a great Neuman Old Blues Eyes mic, but it's excellent for male vocals when doing home recording. I think I got my best take (of a male vocal) when I was cranking up my delivery a bit. A little R&B shouting, and it was as good as any mic I've played with for a long time. So consider that my take of it's vocal abilties for the male voice. It's less a Leonard Cohen mic and more of a John Lennon mic. And, as I said, I really think it shines with female vocals. I didn't hear the whine as described by the other reviewer. But my recording room wasn't dead silent and the noisest thing I heard was the fan from my mac. I think you're more likely to be bugged by uncontrolled sound in your environment than any noise inherent to the mic -- if there is any. I wrote MXL and they said poor power supplies and likely user error is probably behind the claimed noise. I just know, recording music, that you just aren't going the hear it in the mix even if it does exist. I did some dead silent voiceoever again tonight, and I still didn't hear a whine. So overall, I'm very happy to recommend this mic. Make sure you get a pop screen, it helped alot. I really, really like this mic for both its performance and especially its fantastic convenience. If you don't feel like dealing with the time (and expense) of rigging up a mic and preamp and just want to "plug and play", well, I don't think you can make a better choice than his MXL .006 mic or one in its USB line. And I look forward to hearing more of the mics in their USB line.

 "Great sound! ... except for the high-pitched self-noise" 2007-06-05
By vlotty (New Jersey)
I got this microphone to record voiceover narration for a video. There are points where there will only be narration, and no music or background audio.

Although it sounds pretty good for a USB mic, in that it gives a rich, faithful reproduction, there is a noticeable pitch generated by the microphone itself. This self-noise is audible during quiet moments or even when speech is recorded, if you listen carefully. On the plus side, it does come with a nifty case, desktop tripod and has hardware gain control with three settings. It worked right out of the box with my Mac, so no problems in the compatibility department.

I was poking around to make myself feel better about buying this microphone over the popular Samson C01U and Snowball, and came across a review of all of these microphones, including the new Rode Podcaster, pitted against each other. The reviewer noted a distinct B-natural pitch from the MXLUSB.006, though it did have less self-noise than the Samson. Check out the review at Emusician, search google for Samson, MXL, Podcaster and you should find it.

Wish I saw that review before I bought the MXL, since I experienced the same thing. Though the MXL has a rich sound, the noise is unacceptable for my application and I'll be returning it.

Although USB mics are notorious for noticeable self-noise, I went ahead and got the Rode Podcaster, and have not noticed any significant self-noise.

If a faint high-pitched noise is not a big deal to you, this is a pretty good condenser microphone. I would be all over it if it weren't for the fact that I need a really quiet mic.
