If you ever buy items through Amazon from a seller other than Amazon and there is a problem, expect a very difficult process ( at least if that seller is Music and Sound Xone and the manufacturer is KRK) I paid for 2 new KRK Rokit 5 speakers, what I now have is 1 new and 1 repaired speaker.
So how do the speakers sound? Better then tiny speakers they replaced but not good enough to have waited for nearly a month to find out the bad speaker would be repaired rather than replaced.
Would I ever buy anything other than books from Amazon again? Not very likely.
Would I ever buy a KRK product again? No
Would I ever buy from Music and Sound Xone again? No

This is certainly the best sub $300 studio monitor.
Very warm sound and outstanding dynamics and bass quality (good timing and really goes deep) for a such small active speaker.
Treble and mids are also smooth and silky. I have both M-Audio BX5A Deluxe and KRK Rockit RP5G2 and would prefer the latter despite former's better midrange resolution and wider soundstage. Overall, RP5G2 is a geat reference monitor and shall satisfy many audiophiles looking for HTPC active speakers. I would say the main character of KRK is warmth and dynamics.

I picked these up at a national chain music store after listening to a bunch of other studio monitors. I am attempting to mix music for my band using Pro Tools, and my home system speakers were lying to me. My band immediatly noticed the difference in the mixes, and so did I. These speakers are very flat and accurate. No more mixing, burning to a disc, running to the car to listen and see if it sounded okay. If it sounds good on these, then it almost always sounds good on the home system, the car, and the bands personal systems too. I can mix with these for hours and my ears don't get fatigued.
These monitors really crank up, and are nice and loud when you want them to be. The build quality is very good. The sound quality is really very good, espcially when you consider the cost. A good friend is an audio freak, and has loads of cash in his stereo room system, with tube amplifiers and the like. His comment when he heard these was that he heard things he didn't hear in his system!!
The one thing about these speakers is that the bass frequency doesn't go very deep. You can still easily hear the bass, and it is good and strong, just not very deep. We play good solid rock, and getting the bass frequency and level is really important to me, and I never have trouble getting it right using these.
I really like these monitors, and recommend them if you don't need to mix music where sub bass is important.

Given the very positive reviews here, I was pretty sure I'd really enjoy the KRK RP5G2's as a pair of high quality self-powered speakers for my PC. And when the speakers arrived I thought they looked great -- the design is quite appealing, and more important, they just feel like very solid well built machines. And their weight, about 13lbs per speaker, belies their small size....and the documentation points out that they have done relatively sophisticated things like separate amplifiers for the high and low end.
But ultimately all that matters is the sound. I was surprised that the main weakness of the RP5G2's was, to my ear, the highs not the lows. I did find the bass a little bit muddy at times, but there's a limit to how crisp the bass can be on such a small speaker...and on most tracks I felt it sounded fine. On some songs I found the bass irritating, however. But the high end to me just sounds incredibly tinny and often distorted at times...to the point where it is almost unlistenable. It feels like they must be using a very cheap tweeter, despite the manufacturer's claims of a very sophisticated high end.
I did also notice that these speakers are quite directional. The speakers should be at close to ear level or you lose a lot of high end. That is typical of studio monitor type speakers, I think.
I guess it depends what your expecations are. Yes, these speakers will kill any iPod dock and they will probably sound fine to most people. But, if you consider yourself even a remote audiophile, I strongly recommend auditioning these speakers in person before you buy them....they aren't terrible but they have problems you should be aware of. They can certainly produce a fairly big undistorted sound, so if you just want to fill up your room, they will do fine, and they are probably worth about the price they sell for.
