 "It works well." 2010-02-10
By R. Cottrell
It is simple to install this contact mike -- no surprises. I used it to create and electrify a cigar-box guitar. The quality of sound that resulted was beyond my modest expectations. The sound is simple, clear, and resembles an acoustic guitar -- which is more than a cigar-box deserves.

When the sound (or the signal) is passed through an effects device on its way to the amp, a variety of wild and crazy electric effects (reverb, etc.) can be created.

 "Not what was pictured" 2010-02-07
By M. Brophy (Maryland)
I was looking forward to a pretty decent cheap little pickup for my ukulele, but I did not receive what was pictured on amazon. Instead of and AXL pickup i got a pickup the company Signal Flex (model SF-PU1) that just sounds terrible. very tinny sound with no fullness, when placed in multiple positions. The pickup, although it had a female 1/4" end, was NOT designed to sit in the instrument and be mounted by drilling a hole, it seems like it is supposed to be attached to the strap holder (through a shoddy plastic clamp) which my ukulele does not have. overall the quality of it seemed cheap, although you get what you pay for. I would not recommend the seller bandbox2, they do not give you what they advertise.

"best and easy install for acoustic instrument." 2010-01-17

Simple to install and true to the sound of the instrument. Take the time to locate the best sweet spot to locate the pickup on the instrument, and be sure to use a more permanent adhesive than the double sided tape provided.

"Does what it's supposed to." 2009-12-27
By Daevyd (Dayton, OH USA)
I received this for Christmas this year. I replaced my Seymour Performer with it and it sounds great, making my acoustic guitar sound like an acoustic guitar in addition to eliminating the ugly cord coming out of the front and giving me back my entire sound hole. There really isn't anything negative to say about this product. It's inexpensive and a cinch to install (remember when drilling: safety glasses and restraints and/or a sedative--the wife freaked out when I began drilling a hole in my axe). You will, however, need a pre-amp. I use the Tech 21 SansAmp Para Driver DI and it is suh-WEET!!

"So much more than expected." 2009-11-24
By Brian Norwood (Riverside, CA USA)
I must admit, for the price, my expectations were not high. I was mostly thinking it would make it easy to tune my acoustic with my Boss TU-2 Tuner (which has no mic). I installed the pickup on my Epiphone C-40 Nylon String guitar, near the bridge on the bass side. If you are somewhat handy and have the tools installation is fairly straight forward. You WILL be modifying the guitar with this model. Keep that in mind.

First lets get this upfront. This is a soundboard transducer, not an under-saddle piezo. Handling noise and bumps on the top with be reproduced with frightening clarity. You must be careful when plugged in not to jostle the guitar excessively. That said, I simply couldn't believe the results. Reproduction of the natural acoustic sound was better than I ever suspected. The pickup is very quiet, but output is modest. You may require some sort of preamp to boost the signal. Still, I have actually used the pickup in performance and was pleased with the results and complemented on the sound. I particularly like it for the nylon as I sometimes play percussively on the top, which comes through nicely. Dynamics are well preserved, and the the frequency response it pretty even (though placement will emphasize certain frequencies. Read the suggestions on the package).I'll be buying a few more of these. I'm very pleased.

DBX 266XL Dual Compressor Gate

Buy Cheap DBX 266XL Dual Compressor Gate

Buy Low Price From Here Now

Most compressor/gates provide less than musical compression, coupled with gating that swallows transients—or closes early, cutting off decay and reverb tails. The superb engineering in the 266XL ensures that both its compression and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce undesirable processing artifacts. When using the 266XL’s AutoDynamic™ Attack and Release controls, artists and engineers will find that the center settings deliver classic dbx compression, while the full control range produces voicings that extend from slow “leveling” to aggressive “peak” limiting. The Auto Dynamic™ circuitry continuously adjusts the actual attack and release times to optimally match the program material. Since users aren’t restricted to using the Attack and Release controls only in “peak” operation, they can tailor the response of the 266XL for individual tracks, mixed program material, special effects or system protection. As a result, production studios can use the versatile 266XL to replace multiple “single-purpose” limiters while sound reinforcement users can standardize on the 266XL for all of their applications. The 266XL’s advanced gate circuitry uses a completely new, program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth release characteristics—even with complex signals, such as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx® VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure top gating performance for each application.

I'm pleased about this purchase. We do live-to-tape podcasting; this compressor makes the levels much easier to control. I still need to add more post production compression for my commercial work (broadcast), but hey, that's only one extra step.

Solid device. Great price. Until money, need and want align, the DBX compressor will do just fine.

You simply can't beat the quality and price of the DBX compressors. I've used DBX for both professional on-air recording and private studio recordings for over 7 years. The expander/gate is phenomenal. The compressor is natural sounding, and provides much more flexibility than a standard limiter ever could. Match this unit with a Shure SM58 microphone and you have a powerhouse of a recording setup.

 "Good for the price" 2010-01-23
By D. Wyatt (Virginia, USA)
For a relatively inexpensive microphone that doesn't require any external equipment to convert it to USB, I think this is a good buy. I don't count the headphones in the equation since I think they are of poor quality, but I didn't care. I bought it for the mic.

I've only used it with Camtasia, and the audio levels seem low and I get lots of "popping" when I talk when I turn up the level on the mic too much. The levels can be adjusted after the fact in the software, but I didn't expect to run into those issues.

The documentation is almost exclusively about using Audacity, but has almost nothing about the mic itself. For instance, there's a black side and a gold side to the actual mic. Why is that? Do they have different sound pickup patterns? Which should I use? Should I angle it or set it upright when I talk for the best results?

I'm sure an audio expert would know the answers to these questions, but then again, an audio expert probably wouldn't be buying this mic, either. So I've just played with it to see what works.

For semi-pro recording of narration or podcasts by a non-audiophile, this mic works fine.

I use this mic without the headset, for everyday Skyping and to teach online. Audio from my speakers doesn't interfere or cause feedback during live conversations. So the mic provides hands free, high quality audio.

When I purchased and started using it, people were happily surprised at how well my voice came through. An essential tool not just for podcasting but for other online audio as well.

Alesis USB Mic Podcasting Kit with Headphones and Software

I needed a good quality microphone to produce some powerpoint presentations using Camtasia. The microphone easily installs and functions beautifully. It also works great with speech to text applications. For the applications I use, a boom microphone with a headset is uncomfortable and I do not always want to monitor the recording as it is being produced. The headphones are ok and I had a bit of a problem getting the computer configured to work with them with the microphone but once I did they work fine. A good product at a reasonable price.

"Gets the job done, but is not audiophile quality" 2009-12-19
By Tube Tone 6L6 (Lansdowne, PA United States)
I purchased this as an early xmas gift for my Grandmother who just doesn't understand how to use the full rack Denon Stereo my Grandfather purchased. A few years after his death she got a Bose Wave radio/CD player and likes it and actually uses it, but misses the vinyl in her collection. I chose the Rolls because it was small, had no dials or buttons to confuse her and I wasn't willing to pay too much for a better sounding preamp when she doesn't have the best hearing anymore (she's 84 now). It works well to connect her Denon turntable to the Bose and she seems happy with the simplicity. I personally found it to be a tad noisy and missing the clarity and depth of soundstage of my Cambridge Audio Azur 540p (phono preamp)linking my 1976 hotrodded Thorens TD 166 to my Cambridge Audio Azur 640a (amplifier)through NSM 5se's and Energy 15" sub. The Rolls is a nice solid unit that works well for the average user who occasionally pulls out a record now and then, and certainly superior to those "retro" looking oak radio/turntable combo's aimed at the nostalgic but tragically misinformed consumer, but I would not use this to pair up a serious turntable like a Thorens, Dual, Raga Pro-ject etc. to a serious receiver (and no, Sony doesn't count here.) This is for the average Joe, which is fine, because there are lots of Joe's and Joanna's out there that need to groove to their vinyl now and then, but this is not for the discerning listener and audiophile. I would give it one star more if all readers here understood beforehand that this is not a serious hi-fi unit, but I'm giving it three stars because it is in fact OK for the average Joe. If you're not too picky and just need to play some records now an then, go for it. But if you aspire to serious hi-fi and want a starter unit, I would save up another $50 bucks and go for the Cambridge Audio Azur 540p ore even $110 more for the 640p. Also, make note this Rolls is ONLY for Moving Magnet cartridges or perhaps some really high output Moving Coil cartridges like a Denon DL 160 (but then again if you're looking at a Denon DL160, you certainly want to be spending at least $150 on a preamp, period!) Hope that helps you in your decision.

By S. Roberts (philadlephia, pa)
...just plug it in and listen to your vinyl through any receiver without a phono jack. My vinyl collection has never sounded as good as it does now through my new Sony system. I don't have the software to use the preamp to convert vinyl to mp3, but I hope to work on that soon. From what other reviewers are saying that also seems to work well with this little preamp. I wanted to get the Rolls tube preamp instead of this one, but it was a bit pricey. I'm glad that I didn't decide to shell out the extra cash, becasue this little guy does the trick just fine. Reccomended.

This phono preamplifier worked well enough to allow me to access 33 LP records being played on my Dual record player. Since the Dual record player was just the player, i.e. no preamplifier, my record collection was virtually useless to me. The Rolls VP29 is a good product at a good price.

"Fantastic Fender bass reference book" 2010-07-08
By T. Steele
As the "Illustrated History" title suggests, the content is mostly pictorial and light on commentary. Scads of full color glossy photos take you from the earliest P-basses to the Urge bass and beyond. A good portion of the book is devoted to identifying dates of manufacture by head-stocks, logos, bridges, tuning machines, etc. Topped off with a tour of the vintage Fender factory, this book is a must have for any Fender bass aficionado.

One thing I would've liked to see however, is some information on the various Fender bass neck profiles and their respective eras (i.e. U-shape, vintage C, modern C, soft-V).

This is a good resource for Fender bass collectors or those interested in starting a vintage instrument collection. It was also interesting to see the ads used throughout the years and the colors/options available.

This book not only is a great coffee-table "picture book," it also goes into the roots of why and how particular changes and/or upgrades were made over the years.

This was truly a fun and educational eye-opener for me. I just can't put this book away! I say Fender forever!!

 "A great utilitarian pedal" 2009-11-28
By J. Miller (Greenfield, MA USA)
The least glamourous pedals are sometimes the most useful. Some good uses for the LPB-1: Boosting your signal at the end of the effects chain, overdriving an amp or distortion pedal, boosting a clean signal for solos, etc.

Some of the Nano series pedals do not live up to the EHX name, like the modulation pedals, but this thing works great. And it's cheap.

"Can't Recommend this Highly Enough" 2009-06-02
By BassMan (Seattle, WA United States)
This pedal is fantastically reliable, and the best boost I've tried in terms of tone quality and low noise. Because it's a boost and not a distortion, it doesn't change your sound when you kick it in, but it does up the signal to the front end of your amp so it can get more of your Amp's own natural distortion to sing through. As a way to jump on top of the band for a solo, this pedal is the perfect thing. It does add a little bit of mid-range bump which I really like--not much but if you really listen you can hear it happening. Another great use for this is at the end of a chain of effects your using to make up for any signal loss suffered in your chain. I frequently use it as an always on effect in that case, juicing the front end of my amp just enough to make up for the loss in power from running through four different boxes. This can also be really useful if you use a couple different guitars, and one of them has a noticeably lower output than the other. You can figure that difference out in advance and have the boost level on this set to compensate, so when you switch instruments, you hit the boost and maintain your overall output level. This is so inexpensive, I can keep an extra on hand just in case. I have also bought a few of these to give friends who I thought could really use a boost. Seriously, at less than $40 this is a great deal.

"This thing is SO Much better than an overdrive pedal!" 2009-01-31
By David E. Newsome (St. Augustine, FL)
I bought this to boost the overdrive on my Peavey Valveking Amp. I was previously trying different overdrive pedals, such as a TS9 Tubescreamer, 2 different Rocktron OD pedals, BBE green Screamer OD. All of them seemed to color my sound just the slightest, even if you turned their gain parameter all the way down. So I ditched my overdrive pedals and tried this puppy. It blew me away. It does exactly what I want it to. It boosts the signal, so that if you are playing clean, the signal comes through clearer and more chimey. And if you are using a bit of gain, the pedal warms up the distortion and gives it more definition. And it does not color the amps natural tone any. Also, there is no hum or buzz of any kind, and the petal is totally quiet, whether on or off (I think it might be true bypass). This is probably the best pedal I've ever owned.

"cuts your signal, breaks easily" 2009-07-01
By TMC (Los Angeles, CA)
Please, for the love of tone, stay away from this. I don't know why it does this, but when you put it in your pedal chain it cuts signal strength, as if the maximum volume on the pots are set at 3/4 of the incoming signal.

Also, you *can* repair them when the string breaks, but you'll hate yourself for it and wish you'd just bought a better volume pedal. I like the BOSS FV500H myself, even though it is huge. But stay away from this one.

Customer Buzz
 "Good unit" 2006-10-21
By Another Monkey
This is probably the best volume pedal of its kind, meaning the kind which uses a pot (potentiometer) to adjust volume. Most volume pedals work this way. The problem is that the pots do wear down over time, leading to scratchy sound and uneven performance. It's an inevitability you're stuck with unless you're willing to shell out for an optical pedal (to be described later in this review).

It seems that some users don't realize that you can adjust the volume swell rates on these things. That's a nice feature. It's well built and doesn't seem to suck tone, which is very important to an acoustic musician such as myself. It does suck a little bit of volume.

In response to the other review: no, it's not for keyboards. Perhaps you were misled by a salesperson, but there are two versions of this pedal - one for passive instruments (model 6180, high-impedance 250k) and one for active instruments (model 6181, low impedance 25k). This page is for the passive model. A keyboard signal is a low-impedance signal and is not appropriate for this version of the pedal. A typical high-impedance signal would be a passive pickup in an acoustic guitar. The model you get depends on your instrument and where along the chain you put it. For example, if I put it between the guitar and preamp, then I should use the high-impedance model, but if I were putting it between the preamp and the amp, then the low-impedance model is the one.

All that said, the best volume pedals you can get are probably the George Dennis models. They use an optical system, there there's no pot to inevitably wear down. Also, they are impedance-switching, so one pedal will take care of you, no matter where you put it. They don't suck tone either. They'll run you about $130, but are well worth the money.

 "Not for keyboards" 2006-08-09
By Philip D. Mariconda (Seattle area, WA USA)
Another store suggested this as a volume pedal for a keyboard. With its sturdy build, it seemed worth the extra money. Because it has audio in and out, it can in theory be used on any electronic instrument.

The result was disappointing for me. From full volume, the sound is flawless. Then barely moving the pedal downward causes the volume to cut in half, followed by a smooth decrease in volume from there. This may work for guitars, but not for keyboards.

I will be returning this to the store I got it from. Based on the other review here, it is likely a guitar player will be quite happy with it.

Just like the bigger ernie ball volume this was sized down from, this pedal is incredible and has to be near-indestructible. The pedal has a very smooth action and uses a kevlar chord instead of gears or optics to alter the potentiometer. Very nice in deed and a great deal.
