Vox amPlug Classic Rock Guitar Headphone Amp

The Vox Amplug AC30 is a headphone guitar amp that lets you enjoy serious guitar sound, fast. Jamming late at night? Don’t want to wake the neighbors? Maybe you want to work out a lick with your MP3 player without taking the time to set up your amp. You want to play guitar right now. amPlug is the answer. Simply plug this palm-sized headphone guitar amp directly into your guitar, and enjoy serious guitar sound anywhere, anytime. It’s even available in three different sound styles: VOX AC30, Classic Rock, based on a UK-made amplifier head, and Metal, based on a California-made high-gain amplifier head. Even with its ultra-compact size, amPlug perfectly reproduces the complex and warm distortion that is distinctive of a vacuum tube, as well as the powerful high gain produced by a large amp stack. Using all new analog modeling technology, amPlug delivers full-fledged amp sound. Plugs directly into your guitar—a great-sounding headphone guitar amp that gives you serious sound fast. With its completely analog design, great care was also taken with amPlug's gain circuitry. The AC30 uses two natural-sounding gain stages to reproduce the distinctive AC30 tone. Classic Rock uses four classical gain circuits to deliver that great sound. Metal uses two stages of ultra-high gain plus a mid-cut circuit, giving you modern metal high-gain sound anywhere and anytime. Even the circuit response of the original amp is simulated completely. The simulation extends not only to the response of the tone circuits, but also to the way in which the high frequency and gain are affected when you turn down the volume control of the guitar. Every detail has been faithfully reproduced. With up to fifteen hours of battery life, it's easy to take amPlug anywhere. In addition to practicing at home, it's a great way to warm up before a live performance or on the road. There's also an AUX input jack so you can jam along with your CD/MP3 player.

"Best amp I've ever heard." 2010-07-19
By C. Nader (MOUNT STERLING, OHIO, US)
I play punk like Green Day. This married with my SSS strat make the perfect tone for any punk, alternative, Classic rock or cleans. If you play humbuckers you can get a much heavier more suitable for metal, but I really don't care for playing metal. It is very versatile with the gain and tone dial. it lso make a good preamp for a bigger amp and will transfer it amazing tone. I eould have to say this is one of the best sounding amps I've heard. (I've played fenders and high end marshalls.) This is the best 40.00 I've ever spent a small amp. Another useful feature is that it take AAA batteries and not 9 volts; AAA's are more common, less expensive and have better rechargeable batteries. THis is probably what I'll stick with for the rest of my life.

"Definitely a good thing to practice with" 2010-02-11
By M. Stewart
This was recommended to me by a friend and I love this little thing. It is good to practice with when I get off of graveyards in the morning when noise is an issue when everyone is sleeping. It definitely has good tone, and it fits just fine in my strat.

"not bad, but not great" 2009-12-27
By Michael DiTullio (Egg Harbor TWP, NJ USA)
Not a bad little unit and I have to admit it's easy to carry but it doesn't sound as good as I was hoping. I could be expecting too much from a $40 device. I was happy with it until I got a line 6 guitar pod and at that point quit using the Vox amp plug. Granted the line 6 device is significantly costlier, but the tone out of it is much more interesting. But I can't toss the line 6 unit into my guitar case.

 "Practical for Practice" 2008-03-02
By C. Seltzer (MA United States)
The sound of this little guy is very good for what it is. Goes from clean to a nice classic rock crunch. What makes it a very good and recommended product is that it is very practical for quiet practice. Plug into the guitar, plug in headphones, and you are free and mobile to play around. The offset plug works in front angle sockets (Strat style) or end mounts (everything else), and the controls are readily available. Seems solid but I have only had it a few weeks. Right price for what it is.

"Pocketsized and Full of Punch" 2008-02-16
By Danno (NY, NY)
Easily the best headphone amplifier I've tried! In the past these things were either full of hiss, smothered in echo, or were little more than glorified fuzz boxes with an Walkman-style headset. (That was definitely the case with Vox's discontinued AC1). The Amplug is different. It plugs right into your guitar's output jack, and has distinct tone, gain, and volume controls. No, this doesn't sound like a 100 Watt Vox head shrunk into a palmsize toy. It DOES sound amazingly like a much larger and more expensive amplifier, with very pleasing and tube-like distortion at higher volumes. It's the "classic rock" model, meaning that it's optimized for the chunky tube-distorted sound of the mid 1970s.

I like the Amplug a lot.

If you're into lead or rhythm guitar in the styles of Free, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, or the Who, you're going to enjoy this as a very valuable and inexpensive practice tool. The sound quality is good enough to use the Amplug as an amp simulator if you want to record your guitar directly to your computer. I think many people would be fooled into thinking you really had a large tube amp if they heard the recording. It's an amazing simulation, and I prefer the tube emulation in it to some digital effects units I've tried. I actually like the fact that it doesn't have built-in reverb as I'd rather use my own reverb when recording than be forced to settle with the built-in type.

Drawbacks? The clean sound is anemic. (This is not the headphone amp to use if you're planning on comping jazz chords with a heavy right hand. I have tried my mandolin with the clean setting and the results were somewhat better due to the double coursed strings.) Also, the Amplug really does require fresh batteries - the sound as the batteries weaken becomes more and more abrasive. As the batteries die, the sound gets progressively irritating. The plug isn't angled, so you're going to have a hard time using this with a Strat-like guitar. (I use a Gibson SG and I don't have this problem). The construction is very lightweight plastic that does not inspire my confidence. For a few dollars more, the Amplug could have a metal chassis that would be very durable. None of these things deter me, because I don't expect miracles from a Japanese-made plastic amp. This is in no way a surrogate for a real amp, such as Vox's own DA5, and is very much a single-trick device - but it does its single trick very well.

I bought the Vox Classic Rock amPlug on a whim in a music store. I'm glad I did! It's helped to excite me once more about playing and practicing daily. The price is definitely right, and the distortion sounds are superb. Buy this with the understanding that no amp can do all things and you'll have a great time with it.

"Bought it...would recommend it to anyone that likes crazy sound(s)" 2010-05-17
By R. Thompson II (Mishawaka, IN United States)
I will admit to not being the most proficient at playing guitar, but I like to "try" and sound like a song if I am learning it via tab or by ear. One thing that has always gotten me is the fact that I just am used to standard tuning or drop D tuning, being that those are the easiest. So what about the Morpheus? Well, I also own a Digitech Whammy Pedal, so I understand taking one string and knocking it down, but the Morpheus Droptune allows for all the strings (at once) to play.

What does all this mean?

Okay, say you like Black Sabbath, Slayer or Slipknot, they all tune down at some point in time, so how to do this, especially if you don't want to spend time re-tuning after you get bored trying to play someone else's sound? Well, as soon as you turn it on, it is a half step down, strum a chord, yep, it's a half step down..then hit the "down" button on the left...yep, down another half step, all the way to three and a half steps. Of course the metal guys drop D, then tune down, so go ahead, do that...you sound like your favorite band. Now the pedal is actually a "cheat"...should you learn to do your own tunings, of course you should. Should you, with a whammy bar, learn how to adjust your guitar? Yes you should...but after years and years of playing and not getting much fulfillment from my lack of "sounding" like the song that I am trying to play, this helped get me in tune right away.

Of course you still have to have a decent ear, make sure your original tuning is good, because I believe my salesperson a Woodwind and Brasswind said this creates polyphonic pitch drops, which looking down at my pedal right now, indeed it says that. Just imagine if something is out of tune without effect, generally from my experience, the sounds don't get better with effects, unless distortion is involved. But you'll still sound terrible if you don't know how to tune your guitar right, sounds really basic, but after seeing that there are guitars with robot tuners out there, I'm pretty sure the art of tuning your own guitar will be gone in a decade too. So just tune clean, no effect on, then turn on the effect.

There is a cool middle button that allows for you to go up a half step while the effect is on, kinda cool, but really just for effect...if you want to build a riff around that, cool, but I believe Tom Morello already did that. Also once the effect is on, you can only go down on the pedal, so this could be an issue for an active on stage guitarist, but I doubt that you'll be kicking your own effects, that is more likely going to be your klutzy singer.

I will recommend this to anyone at all that amplifies their guitar, clean or distorted, but accept the fact that on the clean sounds, you'll get more of an odd sound (slight warble, but it does exist if your are going to tune three steps down....it really does go three steps and a half down. I know...shocking) What I might suggest is learning how to feel comfortable with tuning down a half or whole step on your guitar, then setting the pedal to two whole steps down, I believe your sound will not be degraded on the clean effect.

Mine was worth every penny and when I did combine it with my whammy pedal, I was able to create some wicked tones through a line-6 spider III. My "rig" isn't something to "behold" for those with the bucks or the drive to spend every last dollar on guitar related equipment, so if it sounds nice/great on my rig, I can only imagine what it will sound like on a really nice set up. (Not dissing my own stuff, but I do know that there are a lot of people out there with more in-depth set-ups) Buy it...or at least try it out.

 "Wonderful Children's Guitar" 2010-01-23
By washbear (Apex, NC USA)
I'm very satisfied with this guitar, which I bought for my 8-year old son. The tone is good and the guitar stays in tune. It feels well-made in the hands. We had a Mark II M2G-30SB 1/2-size guitar which we'd used for a year before this, and it didn't stay in tune (and it always had one sour string that never would get in tune, even with the help of an electronic tuner. Changing the strings didn't help). So I'm very pleased with the Yamaha. It's great quality at an affordable price. We purchased the guitar through the Guitar Center website, which had free shipping. It comes with a soft case. The only criticism I have, and it's a minor one, is that I wish the case had at least one pocket on it for picks and such. But it's a well-made case otherwise. Thank you, Yamaha, for making a good product!

"Beware of the Steel Strings" 2009-12-30
By A. Oldham (USA)
This was purchased as a first guitar gift for my kids. I admittedly don't know much about guitars, but one of the things that make things difficult learning a guitar is sore fingers and apparently nylon strings are easier on the fingers than steel strings.

Just wanted to let everyone know although this guitar appears to be marketed toward kids, it has steel strings... so beware.

Otherwise the guitar sounds good for the price.

Customer Buzz
"Good Value in a Smaller Guitar" 2009-12-16
By M. J. Keyes
One of the other reviewers complained that their guitar teacher called this a "1/4 sized guitar" and it appeared that they felt they had gotten a bad deal. No, it is a 3/4 sized guitar - this is based on scale length and not overall size of the guitar - but it is small. This guitar has a 21 1/4" scale (normal is about 26" but it varies), a 12 1/2" lower bout and a 9" upper bout. This places it in the parlor size category, more or less, and it fits a child well.

This is a fully functioning guitar with a solid spruce top, decent craftsmanship, and an adjustable truss rod. The action is acceptable (although it needs setup at the nut) and the tone is, well, there. You are never going to confuse the Yamaha FG JR1 for a $3000 Taylor. It is a $120 guitar. The main virtues are its size, playability, and price. For that $120 you get a well made, well designed small guitar suitable for all ages with enough tone and volume to hold its own in a small group. You can take it aboard any plane and place it in the overhead rack. If you are sitting around the campfire and have to fight off a bear with it, you are only out $120 and it is sturdy enough to tolerate at least one swing.

The adjustable truss rod lets you change the relief of the neck in all sorts of conditions (assuming you are brave enough to do so) and a little filing on the nut by your luthier (don't try this at home unless you have some experience) will make it very playable for both finger style and pick.

So it is not the top of the line, it works well for what it was intended to be. It sure beats the heck out of the so-called travel guitars which all sound like they are made from cardboard and look like the set designer of Avatar or LOTR produced them for orcs. If you are looking for a quality small guitar but are too cheap to pay for one, give the Yamaha FG JR1 a look.

 "The real deal" 2010-01-01
By C. M. Briggs (Lincoln, MO)
There's not much to say about a selector switch, other than it works. I haven't really had any bad luck with the cheaper, mostly plastic selector switches you find in some other guitars -- but this is a much sturdier proposition. You KNOW it's going to hold up.

More importantly, one of the standard modifications I like to make to my Stratocaster type guitars is the addition of a push/pull pot that lets me use the bridge and neck pickups together in parallel. (For a diagram, see Dave Burrluck's book, "The Player's Guide to Guitar Maintenance." I'm sure there must be some diagrams posted somewhere over the internet as well.)

Anyway, I don't know how to do that with the cheaper switches and there's just something comforting about having the "real deal" under the hood.

You'd better learn how to solder, though -- and watch those fingers!

"Good lock but they really dropped the ball" 2009-10-03
By Sergio Romero (Mexican in Montreal)
When I got my strap I was really excited about it but, that excitement wore off as soon as I saw that, because my guitar has the pin in the back of the guitar, the only way of fitting the lock in it would make the design of the strap backwards and there is no way to fit it any other way. If the lock is design to only be able to fit it one way, at the very least it should say in the description that guitars that have the forward pin in the back of the body will not be able to use this locks.

This is a cool looking, high quality guitar strap. I was a bit disappointed when I tried to use it on my Paul Reed Smith as the locking system didn't fit the guitar's strap pegs. You should be very happy if it fits your guitar but make sure you don't order one if you're planning on using it on a PRS.

 "Damn Near Perfect" 2009-09-12
By Dean A Piccoli
I have a modest guitar collection. I play what I have and I don't want the expense or modification of putting conventional straplocks on my guitars. This strap takes care of that for most of my guitars. If the button hole were just a bit bigger it would fit everything I own. The ratcheting mechanism takes some getting used to, but once you've used it you will come to hate your old standard straps. I think the lock is built pretty well. It would be great (but heavier) if it were made of metal, but the plastic is pretty rugged and the rubber padding protects your finish. The strap fabric is very high quality and comfortable. I would love to see them expand this line and offer a 2.5" or 3" straps in other textiles. It looks to me they could modify this design slightly to insure a perfect fit on every type of button. If so, I honestly don't know why you would buy any other type of strap. The protection and ease-of-use (ever struggle to get and expensive Levy's strap slot over a wide barrel button?) is first-rate.

 "Good for a kid?" 2007-11-21
By J. Tronson
I won one of these (it's white with a black pick guard) and it was my first bass guitar. It was okay to learn on but as I started learning about the bass I started finding all the flaws in this instrument. 2 of the screws that hold the pick guard on were stripped and just fell out within the first week of owning it. The strings are way too high off the fret board even after adjusting the bridge all the way it would allow. The frets are jagged and I had to file them down on either side after cutting my hand and my pants on them a few times. It doesn't hold a tune for more than one session and the neck isn't straight inline with the body. I'm glad I won it because it was a great help in learning to play bass, but no I would never pay for one of these. This is also one of the heaviest bass guitars I've ever held.

By Anthony M. Minor (Temple, TX)
I have the sunbirst version of this bass. It has a real wood body and neck, rosewood fretboard. This bass sounds great and comes with decent strings. Good body construction and finish. Low action out the box, no setup needed. No string buzz all the way up the neck. Surprisingly good tone. Straight neck. Truss rod. Will hold up for gigs or as a backup. Perfect for beginner or intermediate player. I'd have to be pretty good player before I would consider trading up. This is all you need. Don't get caught up in name brands until you start making some decent money for performing.
