"Compression Sustainer decent once you work with it for awhile" 2010-11-05
By Bradley P. Voris (Houston, Texas)
This is a decent pedal, I wouldn't say one of the best that Boss has made but is pretty decent on sustain/compression. Great for thin leads and improving sustain. My recommendation is to read up on this pedal before you buy, its not for everyone. It does have a hiss to it that will drive you nuts and most people recommend getting an NS-2 (noise gate) if you use this pedal. Recommendations for this pedal is to have this as the first in line (I have my at the end of the line sometimes and its still a little noisy), I try to find a good middle ground on my gear to eliminate the majority of the hiss then play the rest by ear. This will take a little time to find out what works for you because everyone's gear is different and everyone wants to achieve a different sound ;o)

Good: Great sustain, can add a few more seconds on with the right equipment and setup

Bad: Hiss is terrible but manageable

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

If you want to have better sustain and decent compression its not a bad pedal to pickup used, if Boss redesigns the pedal then they should find a way to eliminate the hiss and slightly improve the compression.

"Lacks subtlety/transparency and bass response" 2010-06-04
By Steve Bates (Albany, NY United States)
I love many Boss pedals, but this pedal lacks subtlety (transparency) and bass response. It was very difficult to find settings in which the signal did not sound like it was being (over-)compressed. And the bass was very lacking. The only Tone setting in which the bass was present sounds muddy.

If you can get one for a decent price, I say go for it and mod it. I have played through a Monte Allums'-modded CS-3 and the problems I mentioned above were absent.

Different people like different sounds, so at the very least, I do not recommend buying a CS-3 without trying it first.

 "Not Transparent" 2010-02-28
By Dennis (Raleigh, NC United States)
This compressor DOES compress, but it isn't transparent. There is such an audible tone sucking that when you take it OUT of your signal chain, or turn it off, you really notice the difference (I use Elixir cables, might not be able to tell on a 10 dollar cable)

For that, this is at best "average". What KEEPS it an average pedal, no not a GREAT pedal like their Blues Driver, is that the extreme ranges are NOT pleasing, they're harsh. You don't get a nice squish compression, it's just an unusable setting.

I guess the point is, you can't get GOOD compression at this price range. Sorry, but if you're not dropping at least 2 clams, your compression will never be truly transparent and any more than average.

"The truth is somewhere in the middle." 2008-09-09
By Richard M. Green (Avenel, NJ USA)
Over the years, I have owned several of these units. While they may be noisy, they serve their purpose in terms of punching up the sound when I play lead. I find the noise is basically inaudible when I am soloing.

My pedal came yesterday from Harmon Music and their customer service was great as usual. The pedal came withing 2 days of being billed and it fit in my mail box so I didn't have to wait for UPS and I didn't have to worry about the pedal being stolen from me as it could have been left outside my door. Thanks for everything.

"One Of The Worst Comrpession Pedals Out There" 2008-07-13
By J. Rich
The Boss CS-3 is one of the most noisy pedals I've ever heard. If you enjoy hissing, then this may be the pedal for you. No matter what knob you choose to turn it is noisy.

If you want a real compression pedal, that has ZERO noise, then check out TC Electronic's Vintage Compression. You might have to shell out some extra cash, but there's NO substitute for a good compression and you might as well go with one of the best out there: TC Electronic.

I've been generally happy with Boss products, but this pedal is something that just sounds awful.

 "Does the Job" 2009-12-26
By Rex Williams III (Bay Area, CA)
I've had this pedal for a couple of years now. Its been reliable with some pretty heavy use. Only down side is it's difficult to see the LED lights in the sunlight. When I play outdoor gigs i need to bend over pretty close to the pedal to see whats going on with my tuning. Other than that, excellent pedal. Definately would replace if it was lost or broken.

"A must have for Guitarists" 2009-07-21
By David A. Langer
I have been playing guitar for about 10 years and have done some semi professional recording as well as gigging. I agree with the previous posters that ~$100 is a lot to spend on a pedal...but it is well worth it and nothing else comes close. My friend had a fender pt-100 tuner and it seemed cheap and did not tune his bass well. Spend the extra money for this puppy. Also if you own several other boss pedals you can buy an AC adapter for this pedal and daisy chain to your other pedals. This allows you to have just one power source for multiple pedals, which can cut down on stocking 9vs and eliminate a tangled mess of power cords. The TU-2 provides for a more reliable rig and I highly recommend it.

"The "Die Hard" of pedals." 2009-05-06
By A. Castillo (Arizona)
This tuner looks and feels just like an ordinary stomp box which is definitely its strong point. I've had this for about 9 years and it as effective and sturdy as the day I bought it. It's simple, easy to read and the ability to mute is (I think) an underrated option (for switching guitars without that feedback and popping that comes with it). I always use this for live gigs because its discreet and easy to read in dark lighting. I have a Korg tuner and a couple built into my multi-effect processors but I always use this one. Yeah a hundred bucks is kind of pricy for a stomp box tuner but look at it as an investment. I'm going on a decade with this one pedal that's seen a lot of use and day to day wear and its still going strong. If this thing ever dies (which it refuses to do!) I'll be buying another one.

 "Classic 'Boss' Quality" 2010-08-31
By Mattcarson
I couldn't be happier with my recent purchase - the Boss RV-5. This compact pedal is now an essential part of my rig, as it offers a ridiculous amount of options and variability all within its durable body. This pedal gives you the ability to add a depth to the music you play, whether that be rock, blues, or ambient in sound. This device gives you the ability to control the length, volume, and tone of the reverberation type that you choose! If you're worried about durability, don't be! This pedal has an amazing feel to the thing. Boss did an amazing job in crafting this device and like I said, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

"Essential!/Not Just for Surf Bands" 2010-07-04
By J. McHenry (Detroit, MI)
I've been looking at other people's guitar effect pedalboards, and I have to say I'm amazed how few of them bother with a stand-alone reverb pedal. The reverb on most amps is barely adequate to deliver a generic 'hall' verb, much less the tighter 'room' echo that I prefer. I got the Boss Reverb back in its RV-2 iteration twenty some years ago, and I still love it. You don't quite get hard slapback echo - you might need a delay for that - but you can get a nice 'drop shadow' bit of echo to make a guitar sound fuller. The 'hall' sound is also nice and thick. True, it does have a sort of metallic sheen to it (especially short, tight 'verbs), but you can adjust that if you like. Besides, most echoes are fake in some way or other - so what if it doesn't sound like you're in a real church, or cave, or whatever? Go buy a tube reverb for a lot more money if you need it slicker. Or record in a big metal silo - but don't be suprised if it sounds quite a bit like this pedal...

 "Great Digital Reverb" 2010-03-02
By Rexomus (Chicago)
I realy enjoy this pedal. It adds realistic sense of size and dimension to my sound. The pedal has 5 different reverbs plus one modulation effect that is nice but I mainly use the reverb function to thicken up harmonies and leads. I use Boss effects allmost exclusively because they build thier equipment to industrial strength and don't cheap out on sound or component quality. I highly recomend this pedal to any guitar player.

 "Love my Noise Suppressor" 2010-07-20
By solarain (Washington, D.C.)
This is a great pedal. It doesn't "process" or "color" the sound, so a lot of people don't really think of getting one.

If you use several pedals or have a noisy pickup on your guitar, you will want one of these. It picks up the nasty humming/buzzing, and removes it....all under your control. You can dial in how sensitive the noise reduction is so you can get the "quiet" you want.

I use several pedals and, when using them alone, they are pretty quiet....however, when I string them together, they start making noise....humming/buzzing.....I added this pedal to my pedal board and the unwanted noises are gone.

Highly recommend!!

"Required for heavy chaining and most distortion pedals" 2010-01-30
By Derek D. Myles (Boise, Idaho)
Boss lives up to its namesake with this pedal. For situations where you are chaining several pedals and experience excess noise, or where you are using heavy distortion pedals - this pedal just like the other folks have said will make your noise vanish. This will be a required pedal for most guitarists. It is an expensive pedal but well worth the investment if you want to save your ears and your sanity.

 "Excellent item." 2009-06-05
By Ira Carmel (Sacramento)
This noise suppressor allows you to run a loop of effects through a send receive setup. It performs a function of closing off final output when signal from the send receive loop drops below a certain level.

I used this item, a compressor, and modifications to my bass to drastically reduce extra noise and hum in my rig.

< Output Unit < Input

< Send < Receive

Output to your amp.

Send to your effects loop input.

Input from your instrument.

Receive from your effects loop output.

Example;

< To Amp < From guitar.

< To Receive < Compressor < Wah Pedal < Fuzz < Equalizer < Send

Send me a comment if you have a question about this unit.

 "Where'd the noise go?" 2008-12-27
By Brett Gilmer (STLMO)
I got this pedal for christmas, I've been wanting it for a while. The effects send/return loop kills the hum. I use a Digitech Tube overdrive, a strat and a 65 watt Fender amp. You know you still get the hush from the amp when its on, but the overdrive "SHHHH"is gone. The tone from my rig is intact, and it doesn't sound like I'm playing on the beach.

If this pedal got stolen, I'll chop his hand off!

"Been part of my rig since 1996" 2010-04-29

I bought this little pedal back in 1996, about a year after I got my first guitar. I've tried other pedals, but ultimately, this one gives me the best sound. It's very versatile and it's really easy to dial in just about any sound I want. You might get a more dramatic effect from expensive rack units, but for cost and practicality, this pedal is your best bet!

 "Its Ok..." 2010-02-10

It has a lot of sounds, does a lot, but the quality of the sounds is pretty mediocre. There are also some problems when you adjust some of the sounds so that things will just go berserk when you try to adjust the gain on some of the distortion sounds for example. They tried to do a lot with this box and partially succeeded.
